A seminary student raises her hand to ask a critical question: “Obviously, it’s good for Christians to care about the poor, the needy, and the oppressed, but isn’t it more important for the church to be concerned with the conversion of unbelievers? Isn’t that the true nature of the church’s mission in the world?” This question displays a tension and growing rift among Christians today: evangelism or social justice? Which begs the question — what is the “gospel” anyway? Because how we define our terms makes all the difference. The riches of Reformed theology teach us that the gospel is much larger and more beautiful than this either/or dichotomy. The gospel — and therefore the mission of the church — is both/and. And part of this good news is that the work is not all up to us; it is done by the power of the Holy Spirit flowing through us, in word and deed. Join us Sunday at 10 AM as Pastor Stephanie teaches on how such a divisive, anxious dichotomy has arisen in the church, along with a more fruitful way of moving forward together, for the blessing of all the world that God so loves.

RECOVERY MINISTRIES

ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT

JUDY JACQUES THE KINGDOM OF GOD: The Humble Small Seed... In Mark 4:30-32, Jesus describes the Kingdom of God through the parable of a mustard seed. This artwork depicts wild mustard plants growing along pathways and fields, much like those Jesus and His disciples might have walked. In the passage, Jesus highlights the plant’s remarkable growth. From a tiny seed (these are not the cultivated mustard seeds used for cooking), it quickly develops into a large plant that provides food and shelter for many different kinds of birds. Its seeds are easily dispersed by wind, animals, and even the footsteps of travelers. With a long taproot, the plant remains stable and resilient, able to survive harsh conditions. It can even push through cracks in rock, gradually breaking them apart. Today, as Christ followers, we have the privilege of carrying God’s Kingdom in our hearts. In reflection of the humble mustard seed, we see that small beginnings can have sustaining and prolific results. Jesus provides, nurtures and grows even the smallest faith which can penetrate the hardest of hearts, including our own!
