Social networking restrictions for students

New guidelines from the Department of Education

The NSW Department of Education is making an important changes to help keep our students safe online, reduce the risk of cyber threats and make sure student email accounts are used for their intended educational purposes only.

What’s happening

From Day 1 Term 4, students will no longer be able to use their school email address (@education.nsw.gov.au) to access social media, gaming, instant messaging and similar platforms. This means they will also not be able to retrieve password-recovery emails and the like from these platforms.

What students need to do

Students are encouraged to immediately update their social media account emails.

If your child has signed up for a social media, gaming, instant messaging or similar account using their student email address, please have them change it to a personal email address on each platform by Sunday 13 October to make sure you don't lose access to the account. Here’s how:

  • Log in to each account.
  • Go to the account settings and update your email address to a personal one. Add a mobile number too, if you haven’t already.

Why this is happening

The department is making this change to ensure all student accounts are being used for their educational purposes, and to help protect them from risks online. Using their personal email address for these platforms instead of their student email address reduces the chances of someone gaining access to information in their school account.

Congratulations to our Year 12 Drama students on successfully completing their HSC Performance examinations

Last Thursday our HSC Drama students presented their Group and Individual performances for the visiting HSC markers, in front of an audience of Stage 5 Drama students. The Year 12 students all performed to their highest ability and the variety of entertaining and thought-provoking pieces were well received by the impressed student audience.

Afterwards, our Year 12 Drama students enjoyed performing their group piece for an audience of parents, friends and staff at lunchtime last Thursday in the PAC after the examinations had finished.

We congratulate the class of 2024 on their outstanding efforts and hard work throughout the HSC year to get their performances polished, refined and exam ready.

Lexi shines at Dramaworks

Celebrating the top group and individual performances from the 2024 HSC Drama candidature from a range of schools across the North Coast

Yesterday, at the Byron Theatre, Lexi O performed her Individual piece ‘Captain Everything’ by Pete Malacki (adapted by Lexi) on the stage to a full house of students and teachers from schools across the North Coast. The selected students also performed a 2nd show again last night for family, friends and the community.

The Dramaworks Showcase features a selection of the top HSC Drama pieces from schools across the Northern Rivers and it is a great honour for Lexi to be chosen.

Ms Museth, Ms Marcus and Year 12 Year Advisor Mr Sawyer took our BBHS Year 9 and Year 12 Drama students to see the show and support Lexi as she represented Byron Bay High School on the stage. Lexi’s solo performance is as entertaining as it is moving; she has showcased her high level acting skills and exceptional stage presence in its delivery.

Congratulations, Lexi!

CAPAL HSC M.A.D Showcase evening

Celebrating our talented Year 12 Music, Art and Drama students - Friday 13 September

On Friday 13 September, we invite the families and friends of our talented Year 12 CAPA students to join us in the PAC for an intimate performance and exhibition evening celebrating the 2024 HSC Art, Music and Drama works.

The exhibition of HSC Visual Art Bodies of Work will be open from 5-6 pm and then the Music and Drama showcase will start 6pm till 7.30 pm in the PAC.

A variety of musical acts and solo drama works will be performed on the evening. There will be light snacks available for purchase outside the PAC from 5-6 pm. The evening is a great opportunity for our Music students especially, as it allows them to practice their HSC performance pieces in front of an audience before they sit their HSC Practical examinations next week.

Good luck to our Music students and Mr Black for next week!

Trees for bees

This term, Year 10 students had a great morning listening to different environmental change and management groups chatting about the impacts on our local wildlife and how we could have a more positive effect on our local environment.

We were visited by:

  • The 'Bird Buddies' - an extremely passionate group of women who monitor our local bird populations.
  • Arakwal custodian Nickolla Clarke - gave a great talk on the Arakwal seasons and history.
  • The 'Friends of Koalas' group - helped us to discover the habitat trees around our school and plant pocket forests to create a habitat for koalas.
  • Tahnee Barnes - a Vet nurse from the Wildlife Hospital gave a presentation about her line of work and her passion for animals.

We were thankful to 'Wheen Bees' and 'Carman's Kitchen' as they gave us a grant that enabled us to plant 80 trees, expanding one of our pocket forests and starting two others. This forest will also support pollinating insects that are declining in numbers due to habitat destruction.

The day was a great success as students and teachers learnt a lot and enjoyed the feeling of managing some of the issues affecting our natural environment and the unique species that live here.

We hope to continue these initiatives for future students of Byron Bay High School.

Written by Poppy Hills - Year 10 student

What students said about the day:

‘Tree planting was very inspirational and special to do because we are doing something positive for the environment.”

“I learnt a lot about the different species of birds and how we can protect them during the Bird Buddies talk”

“I had never planted a tree before and It felt good to actively help the environment by planting trees.”

“After the death of our local koala, Moji, it felt great to build habitat for the koalas.”

FNC Futsal Championships

Our 14s and 16s Boys and Girls Futsal Teams recently travelled to Ballina for the annual Far North Coast Futsal Championships.

There were many exciting moments throughout the tournament as the games were played with high intensity and amazing skill. All teams played exceptionally well, achieving great results:

  • 14s Boys - Champions!
  • 16s Boys - Runners Up
  • 14s Girls - Knocked out in the 1st game in extra time, lost their 2nd game and won their last game.
  • 16s Girls - Made the Semi Finals, achieving 3rd overall
A huge congratulations to the 14's boys who dominated all of their games to come home as the FNC Champions!

I would like to thank all of our departing 16s players, as this was their last tournament with the school. It was very unlucky they couldn’t bring home the trophy this year... but they came very close.

SRC Leadership TreeTops Challange

Last Friday, 22 of our Student Representative Council (SRC) students went to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and completed the TreeTops Challenge - Australia’s largest high ropes and zip line course.

Many people faced their fears and challenged themselves, with the help of friends and peers.
The SRC bonded through tackling the challenges as a team and pushing outside their comfort zones.

We were lucky enough to have our wonderful Deputy, Mr Lee attend this excursion with us.
