Angell Elementary Shows One Pride for the Detroit Lions
Angell Elementary is bursting with Detroit Lions pride! This Halloween, Angell staff showed their team spirit by dressing in their best Lions gear, kicking off months of Lions fever throughout the school.
This week, art teacher Samantha Letvin channeled the excitement into creativity by leading all Angell students in a directed drawing project featuring an original Warhol-inspired design: a Campbell’s soup can labeled "Campbell’s Crew," complete with a roaring lion at the center. The project celebrates Lions fandom and connects directly to the art curriculum. Fifth-grade students dive deeper into the works of iconic pop artist Andy Warhol, and this project offers younger grades an exciting preview of the vibrant studies awaiting them.
In addition to the Campbell’s Crew artwork, one class has even taken their Lions spirit to the next level by composing an original song titled "Forward Down the Line."
On Thursday, January 16th the entire Angell Elementary community was invited to wear their best Honolulu blue for a school-wide Respect Circle assembly.
"It's amazing to see our students so engaged and excited," said Julie McKeeman, Angell’s Media Specialist. "The Lions have brought our community closer together, and this project shows how creativity and curriculum can unite to inspire young learners."
Board of Education Members Select Officers, Swear In New Members, Sign Code of Ethics
On Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Board of Education Organizational meeting, the newly elected Board members were officially sworn into office, new officers were elected and the Board signed their Code of Ethics document.
Keith Logsdon and Jon Heger were re-elected and elected to the Board respectively on November 5, 2024. The Hon. Derek W. Meinecke and Hon. Andrew W. Kowalkowski attended the meeting to swear both Mr. Logsdon and Mr. Heger into office to begin their new six year terms. During the official swearing in ceremony, the newly elected Board members took an oath of office.
The two judges are from the 44th District Court in Royal Oak and both have connections to the Berkley School District. Judge Meinecke runs the Justice 101 program with Berkley Schools 5th grade classes at Rogers, Angell and Pattengill and Judge Kowalkowski runs the Teen Court program at Norup.
After swearing in the new Board members, the Board elected their new officers:
President: Mike Tripp
Vice President: Sarah Mountain
Treasurer: Keith Logsdon
Secretary: Barrie Frankel
Trustees: Roger Blake, Jason Deneau, Jon Heger
The Board of Education members also signed their Code of Ethics document. Every time the Board has a new trustee and/or Superintendent, the Board members reaffirm their commitment to uphold their Code of Ethics. The beginning of the code reads:
As members of the Berkley School District Board of Education, we realize that to be the most effective advocates for children, we, as a Board, must function as a team and at all times treat each other and the people we serve with the utmost courtesy, dignity, respect and professionalism. Should we, for whatever reason, fail to follow these guidelines, we ask that our fellow Board members call it to our attention. Should that occur, we pledge to accept the feedback without anger or retribution, and to renew our efforts to follow this Code of Ethics and Board Culture Guide. We shall promote the best interests of the school district as a whole, and, to that end, all decisions will place the needs of children first by adhering to the following educational and ethical standards.
Calendar Change
At the Study Session, the Board voted to change the February 3 Board of Education Study Session meeting to Monday, February 10, ahead of the Regular Meeting due to the National Advocacy Conference in Washington DC.

Snow Day Decisions - Understanding the Process
Snow Days are fun for the kids but not always fun for families working to find child care. We understand all this and that’s why calling a snow or a cold day is not taken lightly. Everytime the weather looks like it might cause snowy and/or unsafe conditions, Superintendent Scott Francis participates in a phone call, sometimes many calls, with a meteorologist and local superintendents to learn what the prediction is for the weather. Based on the meterologist’s report, the superintendents stay in communication to decide if schools should stay open or close for the safety of the children. The goal is to make this decision as early as possible so families have time to make child care plans.
Here are all the things Superintendent Francis considers when deciding to call a snow day:
- The day’s temperature and wind chill predictions, especially when students will be outside walking to and from school
- Road safety, if ice and/or snow is in the forecast
- Timing of the snow/ice storm and if our maintenance crews as well as the local municipalities will be able to clear the streets and sidewalks for our students
- If the snow/ice storm will blanket the region and if the two-thirds of our staff who live out of district will be able to make it to work on time
- If our staff members who take public transportation/walk will be able to make it to work on time
- If Servicar will be open to transport our students who take the bus every day
- If our students who are walking will have safe conditions to arrive at school
- If local districts will also close which could close CASA and Oakland Schools Technical Campus, where many of our students spend part of their day
- If we stay open, will we have enough students (75%) in attendance to count the day for school funding
In Michigan we know that the weather can be unpredictable. Here in the Berkley Schools, we would like to be open and share learning with our students every day. Sometimes, the weather doesn't cooperate, and a snow or cold day decision is made. As a walking district, with minimal daily busing, we also have to consider both the road conditions and outside conditions for our students who walk to school daily. Hopefully this insight gives you a better understanding of the decision to close school.
Burton 3rd Grade Students Engage with Virtual Mackinac Historical Tour
On Wednesday, January 15, as part of an extension to the social studies curriculum, Burton third graders attended a virtual/interactive in school field trip. The field trip was part of the Mackinac State Historic Parks' educational outreach program.
The Historic Mackinac Virtual Tour allowed students to see how Anishinaabek, French Canadian, and British residents cooperated and compromised with one another as part of the Great Lakes fur trade and participated in global economic and cultural exchanges.
Michigan’s three largest tribes are the Ojibwe (also called Chippewa), the Odawa (also called Ottowa) and the Potawatomi (also called the Bode’wadmi). They share common language, customs and beliefs. Together, they are Anishinaabe, or “original people.” Hundreds of years ago, they created a partnership called the Three Fires.
Students in all three classes enjoyed the Zoom in presentation.
Burton 5th Grade Tours DIA
On Tuesday, January 14, Burton 5th graders toured the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA) with their art teacher Dorota Jakuc and chaperones. In small groups, students viewed artwork created by the artists who they studied in the Burton Art Studio including Andy Warhol, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Louise Nevelson and Diego Rivera. Ms. Jakuc shared, “We had time to explore the museum with our small groups and were able to enjoy viewing mummies, ancient art, Early American art, modern art, and many others. We also attended the art installation by Detroit's own Tiff Massey: 7 Mile + Livernois - which is currently on display at the DIA. She is an African American artist trained in metalsmithing and jewelry whose larger than life art took our breath away.”
Students also ate their lunch at the DIA and after each group was given a docent participate in a 4-6 piece masterpiece Thinking Through Art tour. Each tour focused on students making personal meaning from looking at art. The tour was inquiry based and invited students to respond to a series of specific questions. Some students also participated in a mini art-making activity.

Middle School Musical Debuts Next Week - Tickets on Sale
Be Drama, Berkley High School’s Drama Department is proud to announce its Middle School Musical - "Crazy For You: Youth Edition."
According to Concord Theatricals,”Crazy For You: Youth Edition” is a zany rich-boy-meets-hometown-girl romantic comedy, telling the story of young New York banker Bobby Child, who is sent to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre. In Deadrock, Bobby falls for spunky Polly Baker, the theatre owner’s daughter. But Polly takes an instant dislike to the city slicker, so Bobby vows – through cunning, razzmatazz, and a hilarious case of mistaken identity – to win Polly’s heart and save the theatre. Memorable Gershwin tunes from the score include “I Got Rhythm,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “Embraceable You,” “Nice Work if You Can Get It” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

Orthodox Christmas Day - January 7
Many Orthodox Christians in the United States celebrate Christmas Day on or near January 7 in the Gregorian calendar. It is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the son of God.
Orthodox Christians are estimated to number between 250 and 300 million people. The largest number of Orthodox Christians live in eastern and southeastern Europe, including Russia and Ukraine. There are also significant Orthodox Christian populations in the Middle East and in Ethiopia.
The difference in the timing of the Christmas celebrations stretches back to 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII, ruled that the Catholic Church should follow a new calendar – called the Gregorian calendar, as it was closer to the solar calendar than the Julian calendar.
Orthodox New Year - January 14
The Orthodox New Year, otherwise known as the Old New Year, is a traditional holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year in the Julian calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this holiday falls on January 14th every year. This holiday is observed by Orthodox Christians in the U.S., and all around the world. Learn more on the Holidays Calendar website.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 20
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day) is a federal holiday and is observed in honor of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the third Monday in January. The day commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. King, who was a minister and leader in the modern American civil rights movement. Dr. King is the only non-president to have a national holiday. While Dr. King was assassinated in 1968, MLK Day was not signed into law until 1983 and was first observed in 1986. The official observance was written into all 50 states and federal law by 2000.
