Annual Report 2023-2024 GRAYSLAKE AREA PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT

A Message from the Director

Dear Grayslake Area Community,

Looking back on the past year, I’m inspired by how the Grayslake Area Public Library District has continued to grow as a vibrant community resource, thanks to your unwavering support. This year, we focused on strengthening partnerships, promoting inclusivity and accessibility, and providing enriching learning opportunities for everyone.

Our annual Summer Reading Challenge was a huge success, utilizing a music festival theme that invited families to celebrate the joy of reading through exciting activities, prizes, and events. With a record number of participants from all ages, we saw the community’s enthusiasm in full swing, as residents came together to engage in creative and imaginative reading experiences.

As part of our commitment to building strong community connections, we expanded our partnerships with local schools, businesses, and organizations. This year, we took part in memorable community events like the Community Resource Fair, Authorfest, Grayslake Summer Days Parade, Touch-a-Truck, Community Art Fair, Teen Job Fair, and College of Lake County’s Maker Faire. We also introduced career-oriented programming with the Lake Cook Career Collaborative, hosted author events with Illinois Libraries Present, celebrated Juneteenth with our second annual “Celebration of Freedom Walk,” and enjoyed the Grayslake Farmer’s Market.

We launched new initiatives to deepen our service to the community. We introduced the Nonprofit Organization Spotlight, the distribution of eclipse glasses for a shared stargazing experience, our first Bookmark Design Contest, and a Sensory-Friendly Hour to create more welcoming spaces for all. These efforts reflect our commitment to fostering meaningful connections and enriching the lives of those we serve.

Inclusivity and accessibility remain priorities in all we do. We’re proud to offer resources like homebound delivery, a robust collection of large print and audiobooks for all ages, in-house accessibility tools, and the new Social Stories, both in the library and on our website, to make our library welcoming to everyone. As part of this commitment, our library card registration form is now available in Spanish to better serve English as a second language patrons, moving us toward greater inclusivity for all.

Our commitment to lifelong learning shone this year with expansions in our makerspace, The Hub, and Tech Time appointments. Patrons now enjoy two new 3D printers, sewing workshops geared toward tweens, advanced embroidery classes, and a new certification system that ensures patrons feel confident using our equipment. Tech Time sessions also offered individualized technology assistance, helping attendees master everything from our digital collection to computer software and cloud storage.

Additionally, we took a thoughtful look at how patrons use our collection, rearranging sections to make browsing easier, especially in the youth area. In the adult area, we shifted materials away from the highest and lowest shelves for accessibility. We also expanded our Learning and Research resources, adding Gale Courses alongside LinkedIn Learning to support patrons seeking new skills and certifications to advance their careers.

Your feedback continues to guide us in shaping programs, services, and collections. This year, insights from the community survey informed our strategic planning, and we look forward to creating spaces and resources that reflect your needs and aspirations.

Looking ahead, we are energized by the limitless possibilities before us. With your support, we’re committed to making the library a vibrant place for learning, creativity, and community connection. Together, we’re building a legacy of literacy, innovation, and community that will shape Grayslake for generations to come. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey!

Warm regards,

Creativity was in full swing at the Tie Dye Party on the library’s front lawn! Participants of all ages brought shirts and other items to create colorful, unique designs with the provided dye. The event encouraged self-expression, with everyone grooving to music and getting messy with vibrant colors.

Groovin' in the Garden: Cultivating Safe Havens for Monarchs

Our Groovin' in the Garden event was all about the beauty of nature and the importance of conservation. With the help of the Grayslake Garden Club, attendees learned about Monarch butterflies, their incredible 2,500-mile migration, and the challenges they face. Participants planted milkweed and other butterfly-friendly plants to create a Monarch waystation and painted rocks to decorate the garden, supporting these endangered insects on their journey. It was an inspiring event that encouraged everyone to get involved in conservation.

STEAM Adventures: Inspiring Curiosity and Creativity

This year, our STEAM programs brought hands-on learning to life, engaging kids and families in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Highlights included Explore Robotics, where the Spare Parts Robotics team introduced attendees to the exciting world of robotics through demonstrations and hands-on activities. In Full STEAM Ahead, we led fun workshops for Grades 1-3, including a Jurassic Slime event where kids created their own amber slime “fossils.” During Spring Fever Fun: STEAM Stations, families explored a different STEAM challenge each day, making spring break an adventure in learning. These events sparked imagination and critical thinking in young minds across our community.

Bringing the World to Our Community

This year, the library was honored to host a vibrant lineup of cultural events that celebrated diversity, unity, and creativity. From the exuberant colors of Holi to the graceful movements of Polynesian dancers, each program offered our community an opportunity to experience the beauty of global traditions. Through hands-on activities like Rangoli and Henna workshops, participants connected with art forms that span centuries and continents. Our Juneteenth Freedom Walk brought a poignant reminder of resilience and liberation, engaging attendees in meaningful reflection.

Celebrating diversity through shared experiences.

Together with our partners, we created a space for cultural learning, celebration, and connection—one where stories, colors, music, and history came alive for participants of all ages. This section highlights the unique programs that made this past year a tapestry of unforgettable experiences, uniting our community in the spirit of diversity and discovery.

We brought the magic of India’s Holi festival to our community, inviting everyone to experience a joyful color party! Donning white attire to let the colors shine, families and friends immersed themselves in this exciting event.

It was an evening filled with island vibes, laughter, and a sense of connection, as attendees enjoyed an immersive experience of island culture.

The Art of Henna: Tradition and Beauty

This hands-on experience introduced participants to henna’s cultural significance and medicinal qualities. Families and friends enjoyed practicing the art on one another, learning about its symbolism and left with intricate, temporary designs as a unique memento of this enriching event.

Remembering Our Past

Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom Walk

This year, our Juneteenth celebration brought the community together for a day of remembrance, education, and creativity. The event began at the library, where participants created art in the Mobile Art Bus, explored our curated Juneteenth materials, and enjoyed lively music that set the tone for the day.

From the library, attendees embarked on the Freedom Walk through Central Park, stopping along the path to read and hear important historical facts about Juneteenth, learn about the journey toward freedom, and refuel with snacks along the way. The walk concluded at the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum, where activities included coloring a community map, filling sand vases, and engaging in hands-on learning.

The highlight of the event was a keynote presentation by Antwoinette Ayers, an Illinois Humanities Road Scholar, who shared “Juneteenth in Me: A Journey of Remembrance and Education.” Her talk offered a personal and historical perspective on Juneteenth, inspiring reflection and connection among all who attended.

We are grateful for the partnerships that made this day possible, including Illinois Humanities, which connects Illinois communities with authors, artists, and educators through its Road Scholars Speakers Bureau; the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum; and Community Consolidated School District 46 Board of Education. Together, we honored Juneteenth’s legacy, celebrating the resilience and strength of a community united in the spirit of freedom and equality.
