Canbury School Newsletter 26th April 2024. ISSUE 331

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

Today has been one of those days which reminds me why Canbury is such an amazing school in which to work, and how we do make a difference.

The YES bus came to school, and the resounding answer from students was a great big "yes please, we'd like more of that". Details of what it entailed are further down in the Newsletter, but in essence a huge "Youth Enquiry Service" vehicle parked up outside the back gates and students were able to hop on board.

We're fully back in the swing of things, from Y10 student Morgan spray-painting in the Art Room and BTEC sports students going off site to record timed sprints, to lunch time cricket in the playground and excellent work from the Drama GCSE students.

We are not quite into the exam season, but getting close. Do please remember - everything in moderation - so revise and rest, in equal measure.

Mrs Rich – Head.

Upcoming dates for your diary.

Monday 6th May: Bank Holiday Monday - SCHOOL CLOSED.

Thursday 9th May: Leavers Breakfast in school.

Friday 29th May: Whole School Sponsored Walk.

Monday 27th - Friday 31st May: Half-term break.

Litter pickers sweep the park.

BIG shout out to our Eco Team of Alannah, Phoebe and Matthew who took to Richmond Park this morning to pick up litter. It was a glorious day for making a tiny speck of our beautiful world a cleaner place, and we are grateful to our Sixth Formers who set to work with our newly purchased litter pickers. Mrs Lansdell and Mrs Strawbridge got stuck in too, and within an hour they had gathered some rubbish which was disposed of where it should have been disposed of in the first place! Brilliant work team, you conducted yourselves as well as any Womble......(look it up youngsters!).

Alannah, Phoebe and Matthew get to grips with litter in beautiful Richmond Park. Mrs Strawbridge ensured sensible use of said pickers!

Do you want sensible, factual, solid information? Then hop on board the YES bus.

Students were fully engaged today with a visit from youth workers Matt and Dan who parked up their YES (Youth Enquiry Service) bus outside Canbury - it was all systems go! We are hugely grateful to Achieving for Children, whose YES bus presents young people with information about all areas of life. From relationships and education, to finding employment, advice on healthy living, navigating peer pressure or how to say a resounding 'no' to drugs, Matt and Dan had an answer, or a signpost, to each question.

Whilst Year 10 students had the first of a two part workshop on how to avoid risky behaviours (such as drug taking, alcohol abuse or getting involved in crime), it was 'Open House' for the rest of the school at lunchtime where groups of up to eight students at a time could get involved.

Matt explained once students are familiar with the bus and have been on it, they are more likely to use it if they see it parked around locally and know it is a safe place from which to seek information.

"It's been a great day," he said. "We've enjoyed coming in and meeting your students." Well Matt and Dan, we enjoyed having you. We know our students did too. Thank you for coming - and Canbury students - use the bus! You can find them on Instagram: Afc_kingstonyouthservice, Afc_Dickerage or Afc_kingsnympton and on TikTok: Afc_youthservice.

Canbury Mini Marathon- next week!

In celebration of the London Marathon last Sunday, we will be holding our own mini marathon next Thursday 2nd May during period 4, writes Mr Barnes. During this lesson we will be heading over to Richmond Park to complete a 2.6 mile run.

This is an optional event with normal lessons still running for those who do not wish to take part.

Run, run, as fast - or as slow - as you like. The point is, do take part. Good health is a privilege - celebrate life.

Students need to register their interest by completing the Google Form that was sent to them today, and wear PE kit on the day (if they do not have PE or Games already).

Unfortunately, due to the proximity of their exams, Year 11 cannot participate in this event.

On your marks, get set, GO!

Good luck to our Canbury swimming fan Olivia who will be swimming 5km between her and her friend Charlotte on Sunday to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Olivia's mum says: "They have both had family members who have been affected by cancer. They both love swimming and wanted to challenge themselves."

If you would like to support them, here is the link to their JustGiving page. Well done Olivia, we're sure you'll be great!

What's Science done to help you, then?

Shout out to the Year 10s who led a great assembly with Ms Anjum. They got us thinking all about Science, and what it's done for us in the past, as well as what it might do for us in the future. If you get a chance, ask your young person what they thought, and what message they came away with, from this Friday afternoon presentation.

Ms Anjum and the Year 10s, she just LOVES a Science conversation!

Brilliant work from Olivia. Absolutely brilliant!

Señora Porter was blown away by work done by Year 7 student Olivia. In fact she was so impressed she asked if Olivia would mind if we shared it in the Newslwetter. Wow Olivia, that's praise indeed from an expert in the field! Well done that student!

Olivia morphed into 14-year-old Daniel, who lives in Bilbao where there is no castle, but there is a huge stadium! We all want to go there 'Daniel'!
