The Walsh Group celebrated Safety Week (May 6-10) across all of our offices and jobsites, celebrating our teams and reinforcing our trainings, all in a unified effort to actively care for each other. The focus of the week was to reaffirm our dedication to the safety and well-being of everyone at The Walsh Group. We were guided by the theme of "Value Every Voice," highlighting our commitment to fostering a culture where every input matters, while emphasizing encouragement, listening, and empowerment as core principles.
We're also celebrating advancement and collaboration, from embracing innovative safety technologies to engaging closely with trades and subcontractors. We focus on continuous improvement and collaboration to elevate safety standards while nurturing a culture of mutual respect and appreciation. Safety Week serves as a call to action to renew our commitment to valuing every voice, actively caring for each other, empowering every person and highlighting safety as everyone's responsibility.
Walsh Construction completes UChicago Medicine's new standalone facility in Crown Point
Crown Point, Indiana - The University of Chicago Medicine has unveiled its new 131,565-square-foot building named UChicago Medicine Crown Point. Built by Walsh Construction, the two-story multispecialty care center is UChicago Medicine's first stand-alone facility in Indiana and the largest outside of the health system's main Hyde Park campus in Chicago.
UChicago Medicine Crown Point is projected to accommodate 110,000 patient visits each year and will offer a range of adult and pediatric specialty services that include infusion therapy, radiation and medical and surgical oncology for cancer patients, MRI, CT, PET, X-ray and ultrasound imaging capabilities, a breast imaging center, an ambulatory surgery center (ASC), laboratory services, access to the next generation of advanced treatments through UChicago Medicine clinical trials, an eight-bed emergency department and eight-bed inpatient unit.
Walsh Construction celebrates completion of South Shore Double Track
Gary, Indiana - Walsh Construction and joint venture partner Herzog joined Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District to celebrate the completion of the $650 million South Shore Line Double-Track Project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new Miller Station in Gary, Indiana, one of the newly upgraded transit stations along the project's 16.9-mile corridor.
Walsh/Herzog broke ground on the two-phase project in early 2022 to expand the South Shore Line rail corridor with new double tracks between Gary and Michigan City, Indiana. This expansion is pivotal for enhancing safety along the entire alignment, while increasing service capacity and train speeds. The new double-track alignment removes the previously existing street-running tracks and its 20 at-grade crossings to provide a safer environment for passengers boarding trains. Travel times from Michigan City to Chicago will also be notably reduced with the new infrastructure, reducing the commute from 1 hour and 40 minutes to approximately 67 minutes.
Archer Western and Wright Brothers Construction joint venture awarded design-build contract for I-26 Asheville Downtown Connector
Asheville, North Carolina - The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded Archer Western and Wright Brothers Construction joint venture a design-build contract for the downtown (northern) section of the I-26 Asheville Connector. This section of the I-26 Connector will transform vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian access to and through downtown Asheville, including a new interchange at Patton Avenue, a new bridge over the French Broad River and a new bridge at Broadway Street.
Archer Western delivers Gateway Expressway in Pinellas County
Pinellas County, Florida - The new Gateway Expressway toll roads and the tolled I-275 express lanes are now open to traffic. Built by Archer Western and The de Moya Group, the new Gateway Expressway brings congestion relief and travel route options to thousands of Tampa Bay area drivers. Built across five million workhours, Archer Western/de Moya constructed two new tolled roadways that will provide direct connections between US 19 and I-275, and the Bayside Bridge and I-275; along with express lanes built on I-275.
Walsh Construction breaks ground on UK HealthCare Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Care Building
Lexington, Kentucky - Walsh Construction has officially started work on the new Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Care Building for UK HealthCare. The expansive 550,000-square-foot facility will serve as the new home for the UK Markey Cancer Center, the sole National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Kentucky. Alongside housing Markey's outpatient services, the building will accommodate a Comprehensive Spine Center, ambulatory surgery space, and various other outpatient services.
The pivotal project will consolidate Markey Cancer Center's outpatient clinics and oncology support services under one roof. Currently dispersed across multiple locations, this consolidation aims to streamline patient care, foster interdisciplinary collaboration among clinicians and researchers, and strengthen cancer treatment outcomes. The project is anticipated for completion in 2027.

Walsh Construction puts new Populatic Water Treatment Plant into operation
Medway, Massachusetts – Walsh Construction has received approval to being operations at the newly constructed Populatic Water Treatment Plant and begin distributing treated water to the Town of Medway. The 2.12 MGD Treatment Plant will treat water from four wells for iron and manganese removal. The water treatment plant also includes a new building that will help house the equipment that is complete with treatment, chemical feed, mechanical/electrical support rooms, provisional space for future PFAS treatment equipment. In addition, the facility will provide water vehicle storage and space for water department operations and maintenance staff.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams marks beginning of Lower Manhattan Coastal Resilience Project
New York City - Mayor Eric Adams visited the Walsh Construction site to commemorate the start of The Battery Coastal Resilience project, which will protect Lower Manhattan from sea level rise and storm surge. Demolition is underway on the Battery Park Wharf, part of the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency project. Walsh Construction is supporting Hunter Roberts Construction Group and working with Atlantic Coast Dismantling to clear out the existing infrastructure, as we prepare to replace the approximate 1500-foot-long wharf promenade on the Manhattan waterfront.
The Walsh Group delivering Express Lanes Connection in Seattle
Seattle, Washington - The Walsh Group and project crews have been extending SR 520's new transit/HOV system onto Interstate 5, which includes the construction of 23 retaining walls; five ramps; a new, three-span steel girder bridge; and reconfiguring an existing southbound off-ramp to be reversible.
Overall, the project encompasses building a new, reversible transit/HOV ramp between SR 520 and the I-5 express lanes; Restriping I-5 express lanes to retain the four existing lanes while adding a reversible transit/HOV lane between the I-5/SR 520 interchange and Mercer Street; Modifying an existing ramp for reversible operations between the I-5 express lanes and Mercer Street.
Walsh Construction completes Park Boulevard Apartments Phase 3B
Chicago, Illinois - Walsh Construction joined the Chicago Housing Authority, Stateway Services, Chicago Alderman Pat Dowell (3rd Ward) and community and project leaders to unveil the new Park Boulevard Apartments Phase 3B in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. Built by the joint venture of Walsh Construction and GMA Construction Group, and designed by Johnson & Lee Architects, the completed project delivers two companion five-story buildings each with 40 residential units. Sixty of the development's 80 total units are dedicated to affordable housing.
The $35 million project and its two buildings each feature a mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom apartment layouts, along with 23 exterior parking spaces and 11 interior parking spaces, a mailroom, and elevator. Walsh Construction and GMA broke ground in February 2022.
Bois d'Arc Lake Water Supply named APWA Public Works (Structures) Project of the Year
Fannin County, Texas - The Bois d’Arc Lake Water Supply is a winner of the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Projects of the Year in the category of Structures more than $75 million for 2024. Bois d’Arc Lake, the new 26-square-mile reservoir, capable of storing 120 billion gallons of water, is now serving residents in North Texas.
Archer Western provided CM at Risk services for the two-mile-long, 90-foot-tall earthen dam; the 210-million-gallon terminal storage reservoir and the associated raw water intake and spillway. Archer Western also self-performed construction activities for the raw water pump station.
Lawson House Redevelopment wins Chicago Building Congress Merit Award
Chicago, Illinois - Walsh Construction and the Lawson House Redevelopment Team won the Chicago Building Congress 2024 Merit Award for Renovation and Adaptive Reuse (over $20M).
The $128 million renovation project modernizes and preserves affordable apartment units. The rehabilitation of the historic 200,000-square-foot, 24-story apartment complex transforms the building’s 583 single-room occupancy units into over 400 affordable apartment units with private kitchens and bathrooms.
Walsh Federal kicks-off new project at Offutt Air Force Base
Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska - We've kicked-off a new project at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. Walsh Federal will build the United States Air Force's new $150 million nuclear command, control and communications center. The facility will be used to protect the U.S. in the event of a conflict involving nuclear weapons. The prior facility was destroyed in the 2019 flood. house operations and Alert Force billets for two missions: the E-4B National Airborne Operations Center and the E-6B Looking Glass.
Archer Western delivers new baggage handling system to Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport
Sarasota, Florida - Archer Western has achieved a major milestone at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, officially delivering a new Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS), Checked Baggage Resolution Area (CBRA), advanced Explosive Detection System machines, and most importantly, a new fully upgraded Baggage Handling System that will elevate airport operations and enhance passenger experience.
This milestone is part of the $41.8 million baggage handling upgrade that consolidated the airport's original three separate inline baggage systems with a single system, incorporating the latest baggage screening technology. Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is experiencing faster growth than any airport in the United States, and the new baggage handling system will support the airport's ongoing expansion efforts to meet the increasing demand.
FDOT hints that new Howard Frankland Bridge may be ready for commuters this year
Tampa, Florida - Florida Department of Transportation officials say construction on the massive Howard Frankland Bridge project is moving along well, and because of that, drivers may be able to use it as early as this year. “If you’re driving across the bay, you really get to see the progress," said FDOT project manager David Alonso. "We’re over 50% complete now."
The new bridge will be the four-lane southbound span for traffic on I-275 going from Tampa to St. Petersburg, while the current southbound span will be flipped for northbound traffic. The new bridge will also include four new tolled express lanes, two in each direction, to help with traffic congestion
- 100% of pilings have been driven.
- 99% of bridge footings have been completed.
- 98% of bridge columns have been completed.
- 92% of bridge caps have been completed.
- 77% of the bridge superstructure beams have been placed.
- 71% of bridge decks placed (this is what cars will eventually be driving on)
