Reading Olympics

Dear Fourth & Fifth Grade Parents/Guardians,

We are pleased to invite your 4th & 5th-grade students to participate in the Reading Olympics. The Reading Olympics is a friendly competition between schools in Bucks County. Students from local schools read books from the same book list (book list) and, at the competition, work in teams to answer questions about those books. The competition will take place in person sometime in late March or April at a TBD location. Due to scheduling changes this year, Reading Olympics meetings will occur twice a month on Thursdays at 8:10 am. In order to participate, students will need to be dropped off at ER by a parent/guardian for meetings from November to March. In addition, parent volunteers are needed to run the Reading Olympics book cart some mornings as well as act as coaches during our bi-monthly meetings. We would love to have your help to support this wonderful program! In order to participate in this worthwhile experience, we require a commitment on the part of your child to read a minimum of six books from the designated book list. Children are expected to attend all practice sessions unless they have an excused absence. If your child has more than two unexcused absences or does not read the required amount of books, it will be assumed that he or she has resigned their place on the team. Please talk to your child about the responsibility of this commitment. To sign up for the Reading Olympics you must complete this Google Form here. Submission of this form is due Friday, November 8th, 2024. Ms. Folger & Ms. Alford are excited to be leading the Reading Olympics program this year. We are looking forward to lots of growth as readers, getting to know each other, and most importantly, FUN!

Respectfully,

Mrs. Lisa Follman, Principal

Ms. Maggie Folger, Third Grade Teacher & Reading Olympics Coordinator

Ms. Emma Alford, Special Education Teacher & Reading Olympics Coordinator

Eleanor Roosevelt held their annual Kids Walking 4 Kids event on Friday, October 25th. Each year, we come together as a school to honor and celebrate particular students at our school that have medical needs. This event is created by the Kids Walking 4 Kids committee, Brian Doron (PE Teacher) and includes, Tricia Steigerwalt (PTO), Kaylyn Santangelo (School Nurse), Samantha Young & Hannah Rumbelow (Student Council Advisors), and Roger Kean & Jason Miller (DJs/5th Grade Teachers). This year we honored two 3rd and 4th grade girls who have Type 1 Diabetes. The school raises money leading up to the Kids Walk, by coloring a sneaker and turning it in with their donation to be hung up around the school. At the end of the day on Friday, students went outside and walked around a large track on the field to be united and move together to support our honorees. ER’s Student Council purchases bracelets for all students to wear, as we walk around the field in unison and “Chalked the Walk” leading the way from the school to the track field. In the middle of the field is a large heart, where students have the opportunity to run if they would like, after each lap. In addition, there were healthy hurdles that students could choose to jump over throughout the walk. Each grade level picks a color to wear for the walk, as another way to honor our two students. In addition, ER’s PTO provides decorations for the walk, and works with the Kids Walk committee in working with CHOP to donate a portion of the money raised. Eleanor Roosevelt raised $202 to donate to CHOP and to use for future PHS scholarships!
