RUOK Day Tug of War

To celebrate RUOK Day, the SRC organised a fun game of tug of war on the oval to bring us all together in a fun team-building activity. Year 8 emerged victorious against Year 7, and our teachers put up a good fight against our Year 12 team who narrowly clutched the victory!

Junior State Wind Band 2025

A note from Ellie M from Year 8:

A few weeks ago, I had the amazing opportunity to take part in the Junior NSW State Wind Band Ensemble, a selective music program run by the NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit. I play the trumpet, and I was really excited and honoured to be chosen to join this ensemble, which brings together young musicians from all across the state.

One of the highlights for me was getting the chance to work again with Ms Cathy Chen, who was also my conductor in Ensemble 1 at State Music Camp earlier this year. It was great to reconnect with her and continue learning under her direction, especially with such a strong and focused group of musicians.

The program started a couple months ago when we were given our repertoire but it really came together with a two-day rehearsal workshop, where we worked with professional conductors and tutors. From the very first rehearsal, I could tell this would be a completely different experience from any school band I’ve been in before. Everyone there was focused, talented, and passionate about music. It was inspiring to be part of such a dedicated group, and it really pushed me to play at my best.

Throughout the rehearsals, I learned so much. Not just about trumpet playing, but also about working together as an ensemble. We practised listening carefully, blending our sounds, tuning our instruments and watching the conductor to stay in time and shape the music properly. It was challenging, but also really rewarding to see how quickly the group came together.

The highlight of the whole experience was getting to perform twice at the Sydney Opera House. Walking through the backstage area and stepping out onto that famous stage was absolutely surreal. I was nervous at first, but once we started playing, I felt focused and excited. The sound of the band filling the concert hall gave me chills, and it was amazing to share our music with such a big and supportive audience.

Even though most of us didn’t know each other before the workshop, by the end we felt like a real ensemble. It’s incredible how music can bring people together so quickly. I also made some new friends, which made the experience even more special.

Being part of the Junior State Wind Band Ensemble was definitely one of the most exciting and valuable musical opportunities I’ve had so far. It gave me more confidence in my playing and reminded me of how much I enjoy performing. I’m really thankful to the Arts Unit team, and our conductors and tutors who helped guide us through the experience.

I hope I can continue to grow as a musician and take part in more opportunities like this in the future and maybe even return to the Opera House stage one day!

Library Chess Tournament

I am thrilled to announce Karel from Year 10 has triumphed as the winner of Term 2's Library Chess Tournament! After demonstrating incredible skill and determination in previous years—consistently finishing as runner-up, Karel has finally claimed the top spot. This achievement is a testament to his hard work, strategic thinking, and unwavering dedication to the game.

Please join me in congratulating Karel on this well-deserved victory. We look forward to seeing more brilliant moves and successes in the future!

Young Mentors Term 3

Another group of exceptional Year 10 students went to Lionel Bowen Library this term to help older people in the community learn how to use their phones, laptops, and tablets.

The students showed the older members of the community how to do things, such as, use apps, send emails, and make video calls. They answered questions and helped solve problems. Everyone enjoyed learning and helping each other.

This program is always great as it helps older people feel more comfortable with technology and gives students a chance to practice being patient and good teachers. Most importantly, it helps different generations connect and make new friends.

Thank you to Birgit, Cathie and Nicola from Lionel Bowen Library and everyone who joined us.

Helping older people with technology is not just about teaching them how to use devices, it's about fostering confidence, independence, and connection. Many seniors feel overwhelmed by rapid digital changes, but with patience and empathy, we can guide them through the basics, from sending emails to joining video calls or navigating apps. It’s important to use clear language, avoid jargon, and encourage hands on practice. By empowering older adults to embrace technology, we open doors to social engagement, access to services and lifelong learning ultimately enriching their quality of life.

Goodbye and Good Luck to Year 12

As the school term ends, we say goodbye and good luck to our Year 12 students. They have worked hard and grown a lot while at South Sydney High School. They should be proud of everything they have done this year and in the past.

I wish them all the best as they move on to new things, such as, further study, jobs, or other exciting opportunities. Thank you for being part of our school and for all the great memories.

FANTASTIC END OF TERM EFFORTS FROM OUR YEAR 10 FOOD TECHNOLOGY CLASSES!

This term, students explored the topic "Food for Special Occasions," engaging in research and investigation to deepen their understanding. As the term progressed, the focus shifted to menu planning for various events.

For their final practical task, students were challenged to design a themed party, with a special emphasis on creating and decorating cakes that reflected their chosen themes.

Amazing work from all three Year 10 Food Technology classes — well done! The results were creative, high-quality, and very impressive.

The following images showcase the work of class 10FTE1.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Twenty-nine of our Year 9 students successfully completed their two-day, one-night Qualifying Hike in the stunning Royal National Park. This challenging adventure was part of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award program.

Along the way, students hiked through a variety of landscapes - from spring wildflowers and gum trees to stretches of coastal heath. They navigated muddy paths and river crossings, were serenaded by frogs, and were even treated to sightings of whales off the coast!

The hike was not only a test of endurance and teamwork but also a chance to appreciate the beautiful natural environment on our doorstep.

A huge congratulations to all students on their effort, resilience, and positive spirit throughout the journey, and a warm thank you to the staff who supported them along the way.

Careers News

Spotlight - Career Ideas

Career Spotlight - Cybersecurity Analyst

You don’t need to be a computer genius to be a Cybersecurity Analyst.

What matters most is curiosity, problem-solving skills and a genuine desire to protect people and organisations from digital threats.

A Cybersecurity Analyst protects computer systems, networks and data from cyber threats like hackers, viruses and scams. They monitor systems for suspicious activity, investigate security breaches and put safeguards in place to stop future attacks. Cybersecurity Analysts might work for government agencies, banks, tech companies or even gaming platforms anywhere digital security is essential. The goal of a Cybersecurity Analyst is to keep information safe and ensure people and organisations can use technology with confidence.

What skills and strengths are needed?

Strong problem-solving skills are key, as analysts often need to figure out how a hacker got in and how to stop it happening again. Attention to detail and persistence help when scanning through data or logs for clues. Communication skills are also important because analysts must explain technical issues clearly to non-technical people. Curiosity and a willingness to keep learning are vital, since cyber threats are always evolving. Teamwork, adaptability and logical thinking are also big advantages in this fast-moving field.

What are the pathways?

You can begin with entry-level courses in IT or cybersecurity, such as a Certificate IV in Cyber Security. From there, many analysts go on to study diplomas or degrees in computer science, information technology or cybersecurity. Getting hands-on experience through coding clubs, cybersecurity competitions, or volunteering to help with IT support at school can be great ways to start building skills. Internships, part-time IT roles and industry certifications (like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP later on) can open doors into this high-demand and exciting career.

Remote Sensing Specialist

Remote Sensing Specialists analyse data from satellite imagery, drones, and sensors to monitor environmental changes, natural disasters, and land use. They work in fields such as climate science, agriculture, and urban planning.

What are their strengths?

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interpret and manipulate satellite imagery and spatial data
  • Understanding of environmental science and geospatial analysis

How do they get started?

A Certificate IV in Spatial Information Services is a good entry point, while a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geography, or Geospatial Science provides broader career options.

Robotics Engineer

Robotics Engineers design and build robots for applications in manufacturing, healthcare, and space exploration. They develop automated systems to perform complex tasks efficiently.

How do they get started?

Bachelor’s degree in Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or Electrical Engineering is usually required.

What are their strengths?

  • Problem-solving
  • Knowledge of programming and control systems
  • Ability to design and test robotic systems
  • Creativity and innovation in technology development
