Test Instructions

Read the descriptions of each film or cartoon. Then watch the scene taking notice of the type of animation used in each scene. Print out the answer form attached and answer the questions in the spaces provided on that form.

1 - A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

A Charlie Brown Christmas is a 1965 animated television special. It is the first TV special based on the comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz. The program made its debut on the CBS television network on December 9, 1965. In the special, Charlie Brown finds himself depressed despite the onset of the cheerful holiday season. After Lucy van Pelt suggests he direct a neighborhood Christmas play, his best efforts are ignored and mocked by his peers when he chooses a puny Christmas tree as a centerpiece.

The special was commissioned and sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company. It received an Emmy and a Peabody Award, and became an annual presentation in the United States, airing on broadcast television during the Christmas season for 56 years before becoming exclusively available on Apple TV+ streaming service. Its jazz soundtrack achieved commercial success, selling five million copies in the US. Live theatrical versions of A Charlie Brown Christmas have also been staged.

Test scene

On his way to join his friends ice skating on a frozen pond, Charlie Brown visits Lucy van Pelt's psychiatric booth and tells her that he is depressed about the Christmas season. She suggests that he direct the group's annual Christmas play to get him involved, and he accepts.

2 - Angry Birds (2016)

The Angry Birds Movie is a 2016 animated comedy film based on Rovio Entertainment's video game series of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animation, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film follows Red, an outcast in an island of anthropomorphic flightless birds, as he suspects a newly arrived crew of pigs led by Leonard of plotting an evil plan, and attempts to put a stop to them with the help of his newfound friends Chuck and Bomb.

The Angry Birds Movie was released on May 20, 2016. The film grossed $352 million worldwide. A sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2, was released on August 14, 2019, co-produced by Sony Pictures Animation, who were not involved with this film.

Red, an angry bird, has been an outcast from Bird Island ever since he was a hatchling due to his short temper and his huge, jet-black eyebrows. When he accidentally causes a premature hatching of another bird's egg, he is sentenced to anger management class, which is the highest penalty allowed on the island. Still suspecting that there is something off about the pigs, Red recruits Chuck and Bomb to find Mighty Eagle, Bird Island's missing protector and the only bird who can fly. They find Mighty Eagle on top of Eagle Mountain, but he has become an overweight, self-absorbed slacker who has not flown for years.

3 - Boss Baby (2017)

The Boss Baby is a 2017 American animated comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Loosely based on the 2010 picture book of the same name by Marla Frazee. The first installment in The Boss Baby franchise, the plot follows a boy helping his baby brother who is a secret agent in the war for adults' love between babies and puppies.

The Boss Baby was released on March 31, 2017. The film grossed $528 million worldwide against its $125 million budget. A Netflix television series, The Boss Baby: Back in Business, premiered on April 6, 2018, while a sequel film, The Boss Baby: Family Business, was released in theaters and on Peacock on July 2, 2021. Another Netflix television series, The Boss Baby: Back in the Crib, premiered on May 19, 2022.

Test scene

Tim needs to get proof of the fact that Baby acts like an adult in his parents’ absence. So, he attempts to record Baby talking on a tape before Baby and his cronies spot and chase him, resulting in it being destroyed.

4 - Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 American animated musical fantasy film produced and conceived by Tim Burton. It originated from a poem written by Burton in 1982 while he was working as an animator at Walt Disney Productions. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of "Halloween Town", who stumbles upon "Christmas Town" and schemes to take over the holiday. It was given a limited release on October 13, 1993, before its wide theatrical release on October 29. While initially a modest box office hit, it has since garnered a large cult following.

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, a first for an animated film, but lost to Jurassic Park. It has been reissued by Walt Disney Pictures and was re-released annually in Disney Digital 3-D from 2006 until 2010.

Jack Skellington assigns the mischievous trick-or-treating trio Lock, Shock and Barrel with the task of abducting Santa Claus (whom he calls Sandy Claws) from Christmas Town. Jack and his friend Sally, who is secretly in love with hm, are busy finishing the Santa suit he has assigned for her to make him for their takeover of the Christmas traditions that year. Meanwhile, Lock, Shock and Barrel, who were told to make Santa comfortable take him to Oogie Boogie’s place of residence even though they were told not to involve him in their Christmas Town plot.

5 - Cars (2006)

Cars is a 2006 American animated sports comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. Cars is set in a world populated entirely by anthropomorphic vehicles. The film follows a selfish and arrogant young racecar named Lightning McQueen who, on the way to the most important race of his life, becomes stranded in a forgotten town along U.S. Route 66 called Radiator Springs, where he learns about friendship and begins to reevaluate his priorities. It was released on June 9, 2006. The success of Cars launched a multimedia franchise, which includes two sequels: Cars 2 (2011) and Cars 3 (2017), as well as two spin-off films produced by Disneytoon Studios: Planes (2013) and Planes: Fire and Rescue (2014).

Test scene

While Lightning McQueen is on his way to a race at the Los Angeles International Speedway in California, his transport truck Mack falls asleep on the interstate. A group of young, mischievous, troublemaking race cars cause Mack to run off the road and Lightning is accidentally released from inside the transport truck. The scene ends with Mack saying, “One should never drive while drowsy.”

6 - Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)

Space Jam: A New Legacy (also known as Space Jam 2) is a 2021 American live-action/animated sports comedy film produced by Warner Animation Group, Proximity Media, and The SpringHill Company, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It serves as a standalone sequel to Space Jam (1996).The film stars basketball player LeBron James as a fictional version of himself. The film follows James enlisting the Looney Tunes' aid to win a basketball game in a Warner Bros.–themed virtual multiverse against a rogue artificial intelligence's avatar after James's youngest son is abducted by the AI. The film’s animation was done by Company 3 Animation, Tonic DNA, and Industrial Light & Magic.

Space Jam: A New Legacy was released in theaters on July 16, 2021, and through HBO Max for one month. It grossed $163 million worldwide against a $150 million production budget, and received generally negative reviews from critics.

Professional basketball player LeBron James has travelled into Tune World to form a basketball team with the Looney Tunes Tune Squad so they can help him rescue his son Dom from the "Warner Bros. Serververse". Despite Bugs Bunny's protests, LeBron insists on teaching the Tune Squad the fundamentals of basketball, which they seem to be having a hard time learning.

7 - South Park (1997)

South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and developed by Brian Graden for Comedy Central. The series revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their exploits in and around the titular Colorado town. The series became infamous for its profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a large range of subject matter.

South Park debuted on August 13, 1997. It is one of Comedy Central's longest-running programs. In August 2021, South Park was renewed through 2027, and a series of television specials was announced for Paramount+. In October 2019, it was announced that WarnerMedia acquired exclusive streaming rights to South Park starting in June 2020 for HBO Max. The series' twenty-sixth season premiered on February 8, 2023. It has received five Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award. A theatrical film, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, was released in June 1999.

Test scene

In this first scene of the first episode of this television series, Eric, Kyle, Kenny, and Stan are on their way to school at South Park Elementary. Kyle’s little brother Ike tries to follow them to school but Kyle plays kick the baby with him and kicks him away. Eric yawns from being sleepy and begins to tell them about a bad dream he had the previous night.

8 - Madagascar (2005)

Madagascar is a 2005 American animated survival comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and PDI/DreamWorks and distributed by DreamWorks Pictures. It centers around a group of animals from the Central Park Zoo who find themselves stranded on the island of Madagascar and must adjust to living in the wild.

The film was released on May 27, 2005, and grossed $556.6 million on a production budget of $75 million. The success of Madagascar launched a multimedia franchise, which includes two sequels as well as the spin-off film Penguins of Madagascar (2014); several short films, television series and specials; and a number of video games, theme park attractions and live stage shows, starting with Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008) and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012).

In this scene, Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippopotamus, and Melman the giraffe, animals from New York’s Central Park Zoo, have fallen overboard while on a ship enroute to a nature reserve in Kenya. They wash ashore on the island of Madagascar and come across a lemur community. The predatory fossa attack the lemurs, only to be scared off by the fearsome appearance of Alex.

9 - The Flintstones (1960)

The Flintstones is an American animated sitcom produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. The setting is a romanticized Stone Age and the story follows the titular family, the Flintstones, and their next-door neighbors, the Rubbles. It was originally broadcast on ABC from September 30, 1960, to April 1, 1966, and was the first animated series with a prime-time slot on television. The show follows the lives of Fred and Wilma Flintstone, their baby girl Pebbles, and their pet dinosaur, Dino. Barney and Betty Rubble are their neighbors and best friends, and have an adopted, super-strong son named Bamm-Bamm. Their pet hopparoo (kangaroo) is named Hoppy.

The enduring popularity of The Flintstones mainly comes from its juxtaposition of modern, everyday concerns with the Stone Age setting. The Flintstones was the most financially successful and longest-running network animated television series for three decades, until The Simpsons surpassed it in 1997.

Test scene

In this scene, the Flintstones and the Rubbles are going on a trip to visit Fred’s rich uncle Tex Hardrock. Betty comments on how they were all able to fit into a taxi to go to the airport. Her husband Barney tells her “Well, it just shows you the power of positive shrinking.” After weighing their luggage, they ckeck-in their family pets Dino and Hoppy and rush to make it to the plane for an on-time flight to Texarock.

10 - George of the Jungle (1967)

George of the Jungle is an American animated television series produced and created by Jay Ward and Bill Scott. The character George was inspired by the story of Tarzan and a cartoon characterization of George Eiferman (Mr. America, Mr. Universe, IFBB Hall of Famer) drawn by a cook on his minesweeper in the Navy during World War II. The series aired first-run for 17 episodes on Saturday mornings from September 9 to December 30, 1967, on the ABC-TV network.

Test scene

This episode is titled “Treasure of Sarah Madre.” In it, George and District Commissioner Alistair follow a map to the treasure of Sarah Madre while evading "Tiger" Titherage and "Weevil" Plumtree.
