Creative Practice Blog Ray Mendoza

My typical creative process entails lots of layering, detailed designs, paint, mixed media, photographs, drawing, collaging, and cultivating inspiration from the overlooked aspects of life. I like to see what I am able to invent through artistic transformation by using seemingly mundane materials, ordinary moments, and old pieces that I abandoned out of frustration years ago as my base layer. It is always so uplifting to see what new beauty can come from that.
Of course, the pieces I use for collages come from discarded magazines, junk mail, overexposed/underexposed film, receipts, brochures, and expired calendars. The collage on the bottom left consisted of photos that were not taken or produced by me, though I do enjoy juxtaposing the printed photos and text, that others see as trash, onto a personal masterpiece. I am constantly motivated by the remarkable world in which we live, and try to savor every heartfelt brush with dawn, dusk, the seasons, and their passing solace.
