“let all that you do, be done in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:14
Mr Myles Hogarty
College Principal
Greetings,
The College phrase above has been our focus throughout the year and is particularly relevant at this time of the year as all of our young men will be set challenges in their school lives, for which they will seek strength in their actions through Paul’s letter to the Corinthians.
Senior students will all be looking to finish all that they do this year in a spirit of love and respect.
Exams will be sat at every level from Years 7-13 in the coming weeks, Prize Givings will honour and celebrate the young men who have reached the level of Excellence in their Academic, Sports, Music, Cultural and Service areas of their education and Seniors will be farewelled at their Leavers Liturgy evening.
Our students may have many mixed feelings at this time but will be able to reflect on our College theme from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, and take strength from it.
Year 13’s leaving for what many of them describe as their second home after seven years and wondering how they are going to cope without the many supports they experience now must “put their faith in the love that they have experienced from home and school. Their education at De La Salle has given them a strong foundation in their academics, sport, culture and their faith which will be their “rock” as they leave the College to face further study or employment beyond school.
The next 3 weeks will be a very busy time at the College and I am sure that both staff and students will be looking for all the inspiration and support that our College phrase instils in them.
I would like to remind parents of the point that is made frequently to you, “At De La Salle we enrol the family”.
Over the next 3 weeks parents will be invited to the College to share in our celebration and recognition of our Prize winners. This is a proud time for many families and we invite you to these special moments in your son’s life and community celebrations where we all recognise and celebrate achievement.
Finally, I ask that if any families have a son currently in Year 6 at a primary school, please ensure he is enrolled immediately at De La Salle as we are receiving many requests from other families who want to enrol their son here.

META
Meta has become the name for a company including Facebook, Messenger, Whatsapp and Instagram, that has comprehensive coverage of the way we see the world and the stories that are told by and to billions of people. In the original Greek it means ‘beyond’ or ‘all-encompassing’. Christianity is a meta-narrative, meaning a comprehensive story which gives meaning to the whole of our lives. It is hard to live without such a story that makes sense of our own lives and the lives of our families and communities.
I thought of this as I attended the baptisms of three of our boys on Tuesday, in the school chapel. They are part of the Sacramental Programme run by the school for those boys who wish to be part of the meta-narrative of the Catholic Church. A group of boys will also receive the sacrament of Confirmation in our Sacramental Mass on Friday October 31st.
Our role as a College is to reinforce the meta-narrative of Christianity, that we are all connected and will live our best lives if we follow the main messages of the Gospel story, that we are loved by God, that suffering can be survived and that we should love God and love our neighbour. It’s good to remember as we ask for a boy to hand in their phone that this is the Meta that matters most.

Ni Sa Bula Vinaka Families,
During Week One, we celebrated Fiji Language Week, which is close to my heart because of my Fijian heritage through my father. There is a Fijian proverb, “Dui seva ga na bua ko a tea,” meaning “you can only harvest what you planted.” It reminds us that the seeds we sow through faith and service will one day bear fruit in the lives of our students, families, and community. Through our words, actions, and daily interactions, we are constantly planting — shaping hearts and nurturing a culture rooted in love and hope.
As we enter our final term, we move into a time of harvest. Our Year 12 students have eloquently described Deus Caritas Est — “God is Love” — in their final internals, recognising God’s love as free, faithful, fruitful, and total. As a Religious Educator, it is a joy to read their work and witness their growth in understanding and articulating God’s Word and teachings.
May we all continue to embody God’s love in our school and families so that, as a community, we remain true witnesses of faith.
Below is a collection of staff reflections from some of our most recent events.
Partners Gathering, Waitomo – Mrs T Emani
In September, our Lasallian partner schools — JPC, FDMC, and De La Salle Māngere — met in Waitomo for our annual gathering. This event included Brothers, staff, Board members, and Year 12 students.
It was a wonderful opportunity to share valuable insights and strengthen collaboration among our student leaders and the wider Lasallian community.
Our De La Salle mission of Faith, Service, Community, and Excellence reminds and encourages us to embrace inclusive teaching with open hearts, open minds, and open arms — to understand who we are, appreciate one another, and share peace in our everyday blessings.
Camp La Salle – Mr A Ngan Woo
21–24 September | Camp Waiotapu, Rotorua - hosted by John Paul College
Seven of our Year 7 students, along with our Campus Minister Mr. Ngan-Woo and Service Co-ordinator Mr. Tuli, had an amazing time at Camp La Salle, held at Camp Waiotapu in beautiful Rotorua.
The camp was a fantastic opportunity to experience activities such as rock climbing, hip-hop dancing, swimming in warm thermal pools, and watching the incredible geysers erupt. Students also explored the Rotorua Geothermal Park, learning about the unique volcanic landscape and natural wonders of the area.
Beyond the fun and adventure, Camp La Salle provided a supportive environment where students were encouraged to overcome personal and school-related challenges. Through teamwork, new friendships, and positive encouragement, they gained confidence, developed resilience, and learned the value of supporting one another.
Overall, it was a memorable experience that fostered personal growth, faith, and fellowship — all while enjoying the stunning natural surroundings of Rotorua.
Brothers’ Retreat – Br Lewis
During the second week of the school holidays, the Brothers community hosted a three-day retreat focused on understanding spirituality in an age of AI technology. Sister Jane O'Carroll (a Marist Sister) facilitated the retreat, leading a series of reflections on the ethical and moral implications of embracing digital learning and religious ministry in the 21st century.
A key highlight was affirming the importance of maintaining our Catholic and Lasallian identity, and ensuring vigilance in teaching Catholic Social Principles that protect human dignity and promote the common good within society.
The Brothers agreed that the Lasallian charism is well equipped to meet the opportunities and challenges of supporting young people today in developing healthy digital discipleship and fostering ongoing formation in human and Christian values.
Baptism and Reconciliation
This week, we joyfully welcomed Poasa Deo, Emprah Leavasa-Auli, and Palei Veamatahau into our Catholic faith through the Sacrament of Baptism.
This was followed by the Sacrament of First Reconciliation for those preparing to receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.
A special thank you to Fr Michael and Fr Soane for celebrating such a beautiful service. We are deeply grateful for your generous ministry, which enriches the faith lives of our students and families in our De La Salle community.
Thank you also to Mr Anthony Ngan Woo (Campus Minister) for preparing the boys and Mr Siosaia Williams - Folau for leading the music. Your combined efforts made the celebration truly special.
Live Jesus in our Hearts forever

De La Salle Certificate
Next week is the last week for Year 7 – 10 students to add their Faith, Service and Community points. If you have any service that has not been recorded by your son’s homeroom teacher please get it in now.
17 days till NCEA exams start!
Students sitting NZQA exams will receive their admission slip next week. Students can also see their entries on their NZQA login.
Year 10 - 13 students who sat the CAA Writing and Numeracy tests in September have their results released Friday 24 October
ADMISSION SLIPS
All students need to complete a final check and confirm that their entries are correct. If entries are missing, we can follow the late entry process. Students must keep their Exams Admission Slip in a safe place and to bring it to every exam. No Admission Slip – No entry. They must not write on it or share it with anyone. If a student loses their admission slip, they can download a copy from the NZQA website.
Discuss the Exam Rules. Our biggest issues are students bringing mobile phones into the exam room. Watches are also a no-no. We advise that students leave their phones turned off in their bags during exams. Start times and leaving times are also important and it is always fun to talk managing toilet visits with students.
Ensure your son has used his NZQA Student Login at www.nzqa.govt.nz/login. Please note students can reprint their Exams Admission Slip through their NZQA Student Login on the NZQA website. School leavers should ensure they update their NZQA login details with a personal email so they can continue to access after they leave school.

Finishing Well
Encouraging Our Senior Students to Attend Right to the End
As we move toward the final weeks of the school year, it is important that our senior students finish well — attending right through to their last day. Every lesson, every assessment, and every shared moment in class contributes to their preparation for life beyond De La Salle College.
At this time of year, some students may feel that their work is done. However, true Lasallian education is about perseverance and commitment — finishing what we begin with a spirit of gratitude and discipline. St John Baptist de La Salle reminded his teachers that “To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform.” One of the ways we do this is by encouraging our young men to remain faithful to their responsibilities — to their learning, their teachers, and themselves.
Regular attendance is a reflection of character. It shows respect for the opportunity to learn and for the teachers who dedicate themselves daily to our students’ success. When students are absent, they miss vital teaching moments, fall behind in their learning, and often lose the rhythm and routine that help them stay focused and confident.
We also remind parents that attendance is a shared responsibility. St John Baptist de La Salle believed that education is a partnership between home and school — that parents and teachers work together for the formation of the child. Ensuring that your son attends school every day, right up to the end of the term, is one of the most powerful ways to support his growth and success.
Please continue to encourage your son to stay committed, arrive on time, and make the most of these last few weeks. Let us together honour the Lasallian values of faith, service, and community by ensuring our young men finish strong — in presence, in effort, and in spirit.
