Understanding the World

We will look at growing up and how we have changed from being a baby.

We will be learning a little about keeping healthy, linking with teeth healthy.

We will also be learning about the season Autumn.

Key Vocabulary:

  • Autumn words - leaves, conkers, crisp, red, orange brown, crunchy, harvest, falling leaves, berries and changing colours) aerial view
  • Harvest - celebration, crops, combine harvester, festival
  • Healthy/not healthy –teeth, toothbrush, clean, dentist
  • Parts of the Body - arm, leg, feet, mouth, head, hands and back

Communication and Language

This half term our topic is called ‘All about me!’

  • We will be learning to talk about ourselves in a positive way.
  • We will learn to listen to each other and our grown-ups in small groups and on our carpet.
  • We will follow instructions.
  • We will listen to stories and sing lots of songs.
  • We will learn lots of new words see our vocabulary list.

English

Reading: Reading is so important to us at Archibald. Some of the stories we will look at will be familiar ones and some will be new. We will be introducing our Core Books which are books that we will continue to use throughout their year at school. We will look at front covers, non fiction books and share our favourite books

Writing: We want to develop a love of writing. We will do this with lots of fun and messy activities.

In Nursery the children will be exploring the letters in their names and knowing the difference between a letter and a number.

In Reception we will begin to strengthen our finger muscles using Dough Disco and Squiggle while you wiggle as well as learning how to hold our pencil properly We will be giving meaning to the marks we make.

Phonics

Nursery children will be starting their Phase 1 phonic activities concentrating on listening to sounds, identifying sounds and playing with sounds.

Reception will start their more formal phonic sessions daily, concentrating on initial letter sounds, segmenting and blending as well learning key words.

Maths

In Nursery we will be singing number rhymes and talking about numbers. We will also look at what our own number is.

In Reception we will be concentrating on being confident with numbers to 5.

We will be:

  • reciting numbers in order in songs and rhymes.
  • counting everything we can using one to one correspondence.
  • counting everything we can using one to one correspondence.
  • sharing old and new number rhymes.
  • comparing amounts and using words such as more and less.
  • matching and sorting objects using mathematical reasoning.
  • exploring patterns.

How can I help?

To help fund our play dough, small world play etc, we kindly ask for a contribution of £1 per child per half term. This can be paid via Parent Pay half termly or for the year at a cost of £6. Thank you so much!

We love to junk model! Please send in any cardboard boxes, tubes, pots etc NO egg boxes, NO nut product boxes, NO medication boxes.

Please send in a family photo so that your child can see their special people in their classroom. (This can be a hard copy or send via Tapestry and we can print)

Computing

E-Safety will play a big part of our introduction to computing in Early Years we will explore a range of stories explaining to us how we can we safe when we use iPads and computers.

Expressive Art and Design

This half term we will become artists and paint our own self-portraits. We will learn how to draw people and our homes.

Music

We will use clapping to explore the rhythm and pulse. We will focus on keeping the beat and clapping in time to a piece of music, then use untuned instruments to play in time to music. We will copy and create rhythms based on word patterns.

Physical Environment

In Nursery we will be exploring Triangle Zone and all the different ways we can get around such as on bikes, scooters and trikes. We will enjoy exploring our new outdoor area.

In Reception we looking at different way of travelling around the space safely. We will begin our P.E sessions in the hall.

Our big question this half term is…

Nursery – What makes me smile?

Reception – What makes us happy?

We focusing on the children settling into school, making relationships with the peers and helping to keep our Unit tidy.

Religious Education

This half term we looking at the importance of belonging and the Harvest Festival. We will look different groups we belong to. We will explore the faiths we belong to and how we show how we belong to those faiths. We will explore the idea of saying Thank you for our Harvest. Reception will be inviting their grown- ups to a little celebration of Harvest.

Spanish

This half term the children will be learning all about greetings. Including how to: Say ‘hi’/‘hello’ and ‘good morning’. Say their name. Ask how somebody is feeling and give a reply. Say ‘goodbye’ and ‘see you later’.
