WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
• Kavod Ha’Briyot, Respect for Human Dignity • For decades, the Reform Movement has advocated for women’s full and equal participation in society. As the first Jewish movement in America to ordain female clergy, we know that women’s equality is necessary to create a world where all people are treated with respect and dignity. Despite years of progress toward gender equity, women (and many others) still face systemic barriers to full equality. • Religious Action Center •

We Cannot Afford to Be Indifferent*
- There are many women who have contributed to the betterment of the world, and of Judaism. Some, like Golda Meir, are household names. Others are more obscure. I would like to tell you about one woman I have been thinking about lately, both because of what she has accomplished, and also because of what she has challenged us to do.
- *ANNA KISLANSKI was born in Moscow, into a Jewish family. Her parents were activists in the Soviet Jewry Movement. When she was two, Anna moved with her family to Haifa, Israel in the early 70s. Anna and her siblings learned Hebrew in the Israeli schools they attended. But more than that, they learned about Judaism and they brought their learning home to their parents, who hadn’t been able to practice Judaism fully in Moscow.
- The more Anna Kislanski learned about Reform Judaism, the more it resonated with her. It was the kind of honest, inspiring Judaism she felt connected to. Soon she became involved with the Reform Movement in Israel. She and her fiancé (now husband) decided they wanted to be married by a Reform rabbi, (not an easy thing to do in Israel - it requires going abroad for a civil wedding ceremony beforehand, since marriages officiated by Reform rabbis in Israel are not recognized by the State of Israel). And she began using her prodigious energy and talents to support the Reform Movement in Israel. In 2010, she accepted a position as the Deputy Director General of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism (IMPJ), the Reform Movement’s arm in Israel. In that position, she was responsible for overseeing the congregational and educational arms of the Reform Movement in Israel. In a meeting with Rabbi Gilad Kariv, who was then serving as the CEO of the IMPJ, he issued her a challenge - to help double the number of Reform congregations in Israel.
- In the eleven years that Anna Kislanski served as IMPJ’s Deputy Director General, she helped to do just that. In 2010 there were only 23 Reform congregations in Israel; by 2021 that number had more than doubled - to 54 communities!
- Today Anna Kislanski serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the IMPJ. I’ve had the chance to meet her several times, both in Israel and recently here on Long Island. She is a passionate proponent of the Reform Movement in Israel, and a living example of what a strong Reform Jewish Movement can bring to Israelis. I am inspired by the work she does, and her commitment to continuing to strengthen Reform Jewish life in Israel.
- Today Anna Kislanski and Reform Jews in Israel need our help. Beginning on March 10th and continuing through April, all adult Jews living in the Diaspora have the opportunity to cast a vote in the World Zionist Congress Election, and to vote for the Reform slate. It costs next to nothing to do this yet makes a huge impact on the Reform Movement’s work in Israel.
- While the Reform Movement is the largest Jewish denomination in North America, we are a minority in Israel of just 8% – partly due to the lack of government funding in comparison to Orthodox communities. The World Zionist Congress controls an annual budget of over 1 billion dollars. Our votes for the Reform slate in the WZC bring funds that are crucial to survive, thrive, and further our core values of democracy, freedom, pluralism, and security; and champion a different vision of what it means to be Jewish in the Jewish State.
- Over the coming weeks we will be providing more instructions about how you can vote and encourage others to do so as well. I hope you will take this opportunity to help Anna Kislanski and the Reform Movement in Israel, to do its good work and to help Israel live out the dream of being a light unto the nations.

- I feel lucky ... When I was 13, the school dress code finally dropped the silly idea that girls had to wear dresses to school. I spent my teens in blue jeans and t-shirts ... When I was 14, the Supreme Court extended a women’s right to contraception to unmarried women, giving all women control over their own bodies ... When I was 15, the Supreme Court gave women even more control of their own bodies with the Roe vs. Wade decision.
- I felt I could do any job a man could AND marry and raise a family at the same time. The opportunities seemed limitless.
- Then......reality soon crept in. Women still earned less than men and were often overlooked when it came to promotions. And it was difficult to work and raise a family at the same time; sacrifices had to be made. However overall, this was a huge leap forward for women, and it seemed like our daughters would have it much better than we had.
- Sadly, today we seem to be moving backwards, not ahead. Like many of us, I worry that my granddaughters will have less opportunity than my generation.
- We can continue to teach the Jewish values of equality, inclusion, and social justice. We can fight back and reach out to our elected officials to fight injustice. And we can continue to be strong role models for future generations of young women.
- Our Religious School Purim Carnival will be Sunday, March 9th from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Everyone is invited to bring their age-appropriate children, grandchildren, and neighbors. However, please let Sharon Fricano know if you plan to bring any guests so we can plan properly. And on Saturday, March 8th at 5:30pm our Religious School Families are invited to help with carnival set-up. There will be pizza for all, the students will have a chance to make hamantaschen, and we will end the evening with a Havdallah Service.
Happy Purim to All!

EDUCATION DIRECTOR
Men, WOMEN, and All Living Creatures Make a Difference and Can Accomplish Anything They Set Their Minds to with the Right Combination of Wit, Smarts, and Talents
- Although February was a short month we had some wonderful events. Alex Lefkof, Sebastian Lefkof, and Charlotte Faulkner all celebrated the life cycle of Bet Mitzvah. Mazel Tov to these amazing students!
- We also continued our Painting Project with JENNIFER LEVINE. Session #2’s theme was: House of Worship. And on Sunday, March 2nd we will once again join Jennifer for Session #3: House of Community. The Mural Art Program has been a wonderful way for our Temple Tikvah Community to come together to showcase our synagogue’s values.
- We had to reschedule our Naming Project since nature interfered. We will now hold our Naming Project on Sunday, March 2nd with our stuffies, as well as officially hold a Naming Ceremony for six students.
- Our wonderful parents are busy preparing for our Purim Carnival. Temple Beth-El students will be joining us on Sunday, March 9th. However, on Saturday, March 8th parents will get together and set-up for the carnival while their children are treated to Hamantaschen-making and pizza.
- Since our recently hired 7th grade teacher was accepted to a program in Israel, Rabbi Sheinberg and I will be teaching the 7th grade for the remainder of the school year. Rabbi will be using Judaism’s Great Debate Materials with ten classic debates from Jewish history, such as Nathan courageously confronting King David over the king’s immorality. Students will analyze the value conflict and apply Jewish values to similar conflicts in our present day society.
- And I will be teaching about the Holocaust, supported by material from United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. I want to thank Vivian Floch, who on Wednesday, March 26th will give a presentation and discussion for the 7th grade as the child of a survivor.
- This month on March 23rd we are looking forward to an Intergenerational Program supported by Lifelong Learning, and please do not forget our Annual Women’s Seder is on Sunday, March 30th...Looking ahead, we look forward to our Family Grade Service lead by our 2nd and 3rd graders on Friday, April 4th.
In Hebrew, "role model" is translated as "דוגמא אישית" (pronounced "doga'ma ishit") which literally means "personal example."
SO...LET'S TEACH BY EXAMPLE
TIKVAH TOTS
Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and the world better than you found it • Marian Wright Edelman
- The people who are least likely to discriminate against women are Tikvah Tots. For, in most homes with small children, no one is looked up to more than mommy. So, what can we do to emphasize the importance of women as the children get older? One answer: Educate the tots. Read to them about the great women, past and present, starting with Eve and ending with Taylor Swift, and make sure that you include RABBI SHEINBERG.
- And, of course, a great way to teach is by example. Make your homes bias free and gender equal homes. Make sure that no mother, daughter or sister is discriminated against by reason of her sex. Women can, are and have done everything that men do. Your tots should know that they have served and acted as Presidents, scientists, doctors, nurses, teachers, cooks, generals, plumbers, carpenters and everything else that a man can do. Please make sure that your conversations and your behavior reflect that equality. Then you will be paying a real tribute to women and you will be honoring Women’s History Month.

LIFELONG LEARNING
Knowledge will bring you the opportunity to make a difference...Claire Fagan
- Introduction: Everyone knows something about the Exodus from Egypt - both from the Passover Haggadah and from popular films over the years, such as 1956’s The Ten Commandments and 1998’s animated Prince of Egypt. (There was even a mini-series in 2006, also called The Ten Commandments, has anyone seen it?) And we all know things about Moses, the man instructed by God to lead the Israelites out from Egypt.
- However, did you know that in the first few chapters of the Book of Exodus, several women play a crucial role in the story? Early on, the Pharaoh orders all newborn Israelite boys to be killed, but two midwives ignore his command, allowing children like Moses to live. Later, when the mother of Moses senses her baby is in real danger, she places him securely in a basket and lets him float down the Nile. The daughter of Pharaoh finds the baby and takes pity on it. She agrees with MIRIAM, sister of Moses, to let Moses be nursed by an Israelite woman (who happens to be Moses’s real mother). When Moses is a young boy, he is brought back to the Pharaoh’s daughter, who lovingly raises him as if he were her own child ... That’s five women who are responsible for the life and upbringing of Moses, our first mensch and the greatest Jewish prophet.
- More about Purim: Speaking about the critical role played by women in our history, RABBI DALIA MARX tells us about Purim and a world turned upside down - when a woman is the heroine of the story, and especially of the Jewish people. Rabbi Marx is the author of the wonderful book, From Time to Time: Journeys in the Jewish Calendar. You may remember that she was a guest speaker at Temple Tikvah in the autumn of 2024, helping us discover the joys and meaning of Sukkot.
- Bring your own lunch (11:00am). We will supply dessert and drinks. (Maybe a few hamantaschen!) Or join us on ZOOM. You can find out more through the Weekly Updates. If you are coming to the Beber Auditorium, please RSVP via the above LINK or the LINK in the Weekly Update. If you are joining online, check the Weekly Updates for the ZOOM connection.
- We hope to see you then. Remember, Purim is a holiday of great joy, but it also is a reminder that from great uncertainty and danger, good can prevail. What a lesson for today’s times!
- Weekly Shabbat Torah Study: Join in the celebration of Group Torah Study with your fellow members of Temple Tikvah. Every Saturday we meet with Rabbi Sheinberg to study the Torah, one portion at a time. In March, we will conclude studying the Book of Exodus, as God continues to lay out for the Israelite people the important conditions of the covenant that continues to this day. We typically meet at 9:15am, always on ZOOM and often in-person at the synagogue. Read the Weekly Updates to find out how to join the group each week.
- What’s Ahead for the Spring?: Well, first of all - less snow, less wind, and less cold. But on the plus side, the Cantor will host another Lunch and Learn, probably in June, focusing on the Torah and mythology. Before that, there will be a Social Action Lunch and Learn in early May. We are planning on having a weekly class, probably on Thursday mornings, starting sometime in the spring, where we’ll be studying with Rabbi Sheinberg on a sure-to-be fascinating topic. Finally, at the end of May, the Rabbi and Cantor are planning another Saturday Shabbat Service where adults can volunteer to chant from the Torah. If you are interested in participating, you can contact the Rabbi, the Cantor, or me (arnoldbloch52@gmail.com). Having done this last year, it was so enriching…and this from someone who had forgotten much of his Hebrew and had no idea about liturgical music.
SISTERHOOD
Women’s History Month
- As it is once again Women’s History Month, it is important to reflect on the many contributions that women, and Jewish women in particular have made to society. Women have contributed to so many different fields, such as: Activism, Art, Business & Economics, Education, Family, Food, Jewish History, Jewish Holidays, Media, Performing Arts, Philanthropy & Volunteerism, Politics & Government, Religion, Science, Sports, and Writing. Many contributing to multiple fields as well.
- Although I contemplated writing about several different women, a commercial came on the TV, advertising the "50th Anniversary of Saturday Night Live". That immediately brought to mind one of the original cast members and the first person actually cast for the show, GILDA RADNOR.
Please remember to join your fellow Jewish Women at Sisterhood’s Upcoming Events. We welcome your ideas and assistance whenever possible. • Sunday, March 30th - Women’s Seder • Friday, May 16th - Sisterhood Shabbat • Tuesday, June 3rd - End of the Year Dinner

SOCIAL ACTION
“Believe in yourself and you can achieve greatness in your life.” Judy Blume
- Looking over a variety of Jewish women to consider choosing among for this column, I began to hone in on what appeared to be two somewhat different options - Judy Blume (https://judyblume.com/about-judy-blume/ - you can copy/paste this site into your browser), a contemporary author and defender of the importance of freedom of choice in reading and Emma Lazarus (https://www.womenshistory.org/education-resources/biographies/emma-lazarus - you can copy/paste this site into your browser), the poet who wrote "The New Colossus" for the plaque on the Statue of Liberty in 1883. Each supported human dignity and the full, equal participation of women in society. However, since I knew less about the latter, I read about her a bit more, the better to choose between them.
- Perhaps Judy Blume and Emma Lazarus are not as different as I thought they were: each expressed significant ideas in her writing; ideas we are still influenced by when thinking about who we are and how we live.
- Come to the next Social Action Meeting on Tuesday, March 25th at 7:30pm (The ZOOM LINK will be forthcoming in the Weekly Update) to plan activities and share camaraderie. Any questions? If yes, please feel free to email us at socialaction@templetikvah.org (copy/paste into your browser).
