GNSS Configuration GNSS and Total Station configuration guide for vGIS

Introduction

vGIS AR supports a wide variety of positioning hardware (complete list of supported devices). This guide helps you configure the vGIS AR app to work with your positioning equipment.

In this guide, you will find the following instructions:

  1. GNSS device configuration
  2. vGIS AR configuration
  3. Leica GNSS configuration
  4. Leica Total Station configuration

Keep scrolling to explore this guide.

GNSS Device Configuration

vGIS AR is compatible with over 40 GNSS devices (full list). Each device may require a slightly different configuration. The guide below captures the general configuration process for most supported GNSS devices. If you do not succeed with the GNSS configuration, contact vGIS support.

Configure GNSS (required for new devices only)

  1. Install the official GNSS mobile app (e.g., Bad Elf Flex, EOS Tools, Trimble Mobile Manager, Zeno Connect).
  2. Enable development mode (Android) - on Android devices, you'll need to enable the Development mode to receive positioning information. Use this guide to do so.
  3. Configure mock location (Android) - on Android devices, you'll need to update the Mock Location to connect to your GNSS. Examples of configuration: Eos.
  4. Pair GNSS antenna - pair GNSS with the device (phone/tablet) using Bluetooth.

Set up RTK

  1. Configure RTK corrections - check that the app supplied with your GNSS device receives RTK corrections. For Emlid and viDoc devices, use the RTK configuration in the vGIS AR app. Example: Leica RTK Setup.
  2. Set GGA to 5Hz or 10Hz - navigate to the antenna configuration tools and set GGA sentence in the NMEA messages section to 5Hz or 10Hz (5x or 10x a second).

vGIS AR Configuration

vGIS settings

Check vGIS AR settings:

  1. Launch the vGIS AR app (Fig. 1).
  2. Open the Main Menu and choose OptionsĀ (Fig. 2).
  3. On the GNSS tab in Options, check whether the correct GNSS type is selected in the Positioning Mode line (Fig. 3).
  4. GNSS Elevation - make sure the Use GNSS Elevation option is ONĀ (Fig. 4).
  5. Set Antenna Offset - set the positioning of the antenna with respect to your device using this guide. Once set, the antenna must remain in the defined position throughout the session (Fig. 5).
  6. Tilt Compensation - we recommend turning Tilt Compensation ON (Fig. 6).

Calibrate vGIS using GNSS

Use the video below to complete these three steps.

  1. Green Light - wait until the light in the accuracy bubble turns green.
  2. Walk - complete the walk calibration by following the AR line drawn on the ground.
  3. Keep GNSS near the device - as you move around the job site, make sure the GNSS antenna stays in the same position relative to your phone, tablet or HoloLens.

Leica GNSS Configuration

vGIS AR is compatible with the following Leica Devices:

  • FLX100 and FLX100 plus
  • iCON gps 30
  • GG04 plus
  • GS18

Leica GS18

The configuration process for GS18 can be downloaded from here.

Configure Zeno Connect (required for new devices only)

  1. Install Zeno Connect.
  2. Enable development mode (Android only) - you need to enable the Development mode to receive positioning information. Use this guide to do so.
  3. Configure mock location (Android only) - on Android devices, you'll need to update the Mock Location (steps 11 and 12) to connect to your GNSS.
  4. Pair GNSS antenna - pair GNSS with the device (phone/tablet) using Bluetooth.
  5. Set GGA to 10Hz - navigate to the antenna configuration tools and set GGA Sentence in the NMEA Settings section to 10Hz (10x a second).
  6. Configure RTK corrections - use this guide to configure RTK.
  7. Check RTK - validate that Zeno Connect receives RTK corrections (accuracy should be 0.05m or 0.2ft or better).

Leica Total Station Configuration

vGIS developed an automated solution for working with Leica Total Station devices. The following process describes the steps to create a new Total Station. The ongoing Total Station use will require only Steps 4 and 5 to be taken to initiate connectivity.

  1. Install Total Station Streaming app.
  2. Configure Total Station settings.
  3. Set up the Streaming app.
  4. Configure Total Station jobs.
  5. Initiate vGIS connection.
