Class 9's Spring 2 Newsletter!

Literacy

In Literacy this half term we have been focusing on the Titanic. We have wrote two brilliant outcomes, one being a persuasive advertisement to encourage people to buy tickets for the Titanic and the other being a diary entry in the view of one of the people who survived the Titanic.

We have recapped and learnt lots of different skills. These include subordinating conjunctions and relative clauses. Along with gathering lots of high level emotive and persuasive language.

We have been trying extremely hard in our handwriting sessions and this is evident in our outcomes!

LIRA

In LIRA this term, we have been focusing on a number of books. These included the Secret Garden, You are Awesome before finishing off with Coraline.

During our LIRA sessions, we focused on a range of different activities and questions. We enjoyed making predictions on what we thought the stories will be about.

Also during this half term, we took part in World Book Day, where we had the chance to show off some brilliant costumes but also show our love of reading!

Maths

In maths, we have been recapping fractions, decimals and percentages, geometry and finally finishing off with statistics. We have focused on ensuring our arithmetic fluency is outstanding and some of us moved onto more reasoning style questions to further our understanding.

Design and Technology - Making a Cushion Cover

For this half term our focus has been Design and Technology, where have made a cushion cover. For this unit we have had to learn and recap new skills such as cross stitching and also learning how to do a running stitch.

We have also had the chance to design our cushions as well as evaluating our final design!

We can not wait to show them off in our DT showcasing event!

RSHE

Our RSHE focus has been on economic wellbeing. We have explored different ways we can keep our money safe and also what risks they are too having money. We also discussed our aspirations and what we needed to do to achieve them.

Science

Our focus for this half term has been plants.

We have learnt about the life cycle of different flowering plants. We then looked at how we can classify plants before moving onto conducting an experiment all about photosynthesis.

This half term we have also took part in British Science Week. The theme for this was time and we conducted an experiment where we had to create a water clock. We also showed the school value of collaboration by creating a tower out of marsh mellows and dried spaghetti! One group from our class came top with a tower of 50cm!

PE - Tag Rugby

This half term our focus has been on Tag Rugby. We have learnt and recapped lots of new skills, these included catching and passing a rugby ball. Along with dodging and running skills.

This half term, Class 9 were lucky enough to go the theatre to watch a performance of 'The Boy at the Back of the Class'.

It was a brilliant show and all children did themselves and Mapplewell proud with their fantastic behavior!
