From Waste to Wow: What You Can Do With Upcycled Food Discover sustainable solutions to food waste by diving deeper into the world of upcycling.

Upcycling is the future of a sustainable world. Waste to WOW is dedicated to shedding light on ways upcycling can help the earth. I believe that upcycling is more than just a hobby. It's a mindset, a conscious choice to reduce the impact we have on the environment. So, below are a few of my favorite ways to upcycle food. I hope this will inspire you to start upcycling where it fits into your life!

The first way I started incorporating upcycling food into my life was by creating fertilizer. Adding small biodegradable food scraps to your garden helps them thrive tremendously. Some of the best scraps to use are pieces of vegetable, fruit and eggshell. These are all common in households and it is easy to collect scraps when cooking. Simply place the scrapes in the garden and it will break down to the perfect fertilizer.

Another great way to upcycle food is to turn it into animal feed. An amazing example of this is Costco. Costco freezes fruits and vegetables that would have spoiled and then sells them in bulk to farms to use as cattle feed. Many local farms will accept donations like these. So next time a batch of produce is about to go bad, toss it in the freezer and look to donate it.

Finally, the easiest way to upcycle food is to turn it into different food. Making your own nut milk, fruit snacks, chips, flavored drinks and more is easier than you would expect. There are endless possibilities. For inspiration, draw from major brands that make upcycled foods such as Ugly Drinks, Spudsy and Toast Ale. Just these brands alone use upcycled fruits, sweet potatoes and bread to create a unique product. For more information simply search recipes online and get to making your upcycled meals!

Whether you're an upcycling enthusiast or just getting into it, I invite you to join the community, share ideas, and embark on an upcycling journey. Let's unlock the potential waste, one upcycled creation at a time.
