Autumn term 1 Nursery class. our journey so far...

What a superb half term it has been. All children have settled into nursery class with confidence and it has been a pleasure to see new friendships forming between the children.

Sharing family books has been a great talking point between children and has helped them to build upon shared interests.

Forming friendships and encouraging children to be confident and independent in their environment has been a priority this half term.

The children in nursery have also been working hard to build up their finger strength ready for writing. They have engaged in a range of fine motor activities and Daily Dough Disco sessions.

We read the stories 'Bear is happy' and 'Bear is sad' and discussed that made us feel happy and sad.

We then shared who / what is special to us.

Dear Zoo was the key story this half term which the children learnt to retell using props and a story map.

The weather has begun to feel rather cold over the past few weeks. We helped Teddy to get ready for outdoor play and discussed the importance of wearing each item of clothing.

Over the past term we have explored the outdoor area and developed our gross motor skills. We have learnt how to ride balance bikes, challenge ourselves by creating obstacle courses, walk up steps to reach up high and so much more!

In phonics we have been developing our listening skills. We can now identify a range of environmental sounds, discriminate between the sounds of different instruments, create our own music, and copy simple patterns of movement or sound.

In maths the children have been introduced to the numeral, Numicon shape and amounts to 4. Children have had opportunities within provision to consolidate their understanding of amounts up to 4.

They have also been looking at simple patterns and introduced to vocabulary to describe these patterns.

The Poetry Basket Poems that we have learnt this half term are called:

'I want to be a dinosaur'

'Falling apples'

'Pointy hat'.

Honey Bunny and Lorna Lamb have had a wonderful half term spending quality time with nursery children. They have been read lots of books, taken for exciting walks, and taught how to brush their teeth to keep them nice and clean.

Honey and Lorna look forward to many more adventures next half term...

Well done to everybody who entered the Pumpkin competition this year, all the entries are spooktacular!

Our topic theme next half term will be called 'Once upon a time'.

Here are some of the stories that we will be sharing together:

The story that we will be retelling using a text map is 'Dear Santa'.

We might even receive a visit from a cheeky biscuit character... keep your eyes peeled everybody.

In phonics next half term we will be:

  • Continuing to develop our listening skills through singing familiar nursery rhymes and poems.
  • Developing our awareness of sounds and rhythms.
  • Engage in body percussion activities and participating in action rhymes.
  • Be introduced to basic rhyme through stories and games.

In Literacy we will be:

  • Enjoying listening to longer stories.
  • Discussing story plots and asking questions about familiar characters.
  • Continue to learn and sing a wide range of songs and rhymes.
  • Spotting and suggesting rhyming strings.
  • Continue to develop our early mark making.
  • Begin to learn how to write some letters from our name.

In maths we will be:

  • Learning to subitise amounts up to 3.
  • Use language such as more / lots to compare amounts.
  • Begin to look at how amounts can be shared.
  • Introduce weight vocabulary such as heavy / light.
  • Introduce basic 2d shape (Square, triangle, circle, rectangle.)

Nursery children will mark the 2 minutes silence on the 19th November at 11am by watching this short 2 minute clip called 'Poppies'.

The 13th November marks the start of World Nursery Rhyme Week 2023. We will be celebrating this by engaging in activities based around a different nursery rhyme each day.

To begin this week we are inviting nursery parents into class at 11:15am on Monday 13th November to participate in a whole class singing session.

There will also be a nursery rhyme quiz on SEESAW for you to engage with daily!

Thank you
