“Birr Wunju Nganka”

Yarning Circle Unveiled

Following an idea developed through KAWAG (KMS Aboriginal Working Advisory Group) for an area for informal yarns and gatherings, our new Yarning Circle ‘Birr Wunju Nganka’ has been unveiled.

The design was developed by Rona Charles with Binja, Nick, Lendel and Adam adding the finer details. The locally sourced rocks are laid out in the points of the compass to represent where people are coming from (so all are welcome):

Yawan – North | Banoo – East | Koolarr – West | Yalmban – South

The firepit is made from iron stone around the outside to hold the heat, with river sand in the middle which is best for cooking.

Records set in June

As the financial year drew to a close, our production and shipping rose to our highest levels yet, along with our local and Aboriginal business spend.

Over $5.1 million was spent with local West Kimberley businesses in the month of June alone, which is our highest monthly spend to date. $577,000 was spent with Traditional Owner businesses, and a further $4.5 million with other Aboriginal owned businesses.

We’d like to thank all our suppliers and contractors for their support over the last financial year. If you own a local business and are interested in finding out more about working with us, please visit www.kmsands.com.au/procurement for a list of upcoming opportunities and a link to register your business.

Campbell Transport Drivers to the Rescue

On their last swing, Damien Elliot and Chris Kantor stopped to assist a family who had just hit a cow south of the Thunderbird turnoff.

Via the KMS info email, we received a very appreciative message from the family who thanked the Campbell’s crew for stopping to assist initially, contacting the RAC and for additional drivers checking in on them while they waited for assistance to take them and their damaged car to Broome.

We just want to say thank you so much to them for their kind words, reassurance and care. You’re an awesome group and we always hold dear what you did on Tuesday night.

KMS Community Grants Now Open

We’re excited to launch our Community Investment and Partnership Program, a grassroots scheme designed to support local projects, events, and community activities.

Grants will provide financial assistance to local projects that demonstrate community benefit, including things like youth programs and wellbeing initiatives to cultural events and sports activities, which all help develop strong and vibrant communities.

Applications for the small grants and events funding streams are now open, with applications for Community Giving Grants to open twice a year, in October and April. Please be aware that funding is very limited and unfortunately we won’t be able to support every application.

Application forms and program guidelines, including the eligibility criteria, are available on the website at www.kmsands.com.au/community/community-grants
