Highlights of the week
History and Geography in Action
On Monday, Year 5 visited the Black Country Living Museum to support their learning on the Victorians. A highlight of the trip was the Victorian schoolroom experience, where the children got a real taste of 19th-century discipline and lessons! Meanwhile, Year 4 stayed a little closer to home with a trip to Sarehole Mill and the River Cole to support their geography work. The children enjoyed a game of "Pooh Sticks" to observe the river’s flow and identified various physical features along the water's edge.
✍️ A Special Visit: Joseph Coelho
We finished the week on a high note with a fantastic assembly from the celebrated poet and children’s writer, Joseph Coelho. Joseph, who served as the Children’s Laureate between 2022 and 2024, captivated the children with the story of his journey to becoming a writer. He also introduced his exciting new book series, Relic Hamilton, Genie Hunter, and led the school in a collaborative poetry session. This was a unique opportunity for the children at Colmore, made possible by our wonderful link with our local independent bookshop, How Brave is the Wren. Joseph signed copies for those who pre-ordered; if you missed out, details on how to purchase his books have been sent via email.
⚽ Football Finals
Huge congratulations to the Boys’ Football Team, who performed brilliantly yesterday! Thanks to a decisive win, they remain in the HMS Shield—one of Birmingham’s most prestigious and long-standing school competitions. Save the Date: The team is also set to play in a final at St Andrew’s, the home of Birmingham City FC, on Sunday 31st May.
- Arrival: From 11:45 AM onwards
- Support: We have been allocated a specific block in the stadium, and we would love to see as many of you there as possible to cheer the boys on!
Have a good weekend
Jon Gale
We were delighted to welcome the author Joseph Coelho to our school assembly this morning. He talked about his latest book series, Relic Hamilton. The children were inspired to create a whole school poem and engaged wonderfully with the whole session. There is still time to order a copy of his books through the link below to our local bookshop, How Brave is the Wren.
On Monday, Year 5 started the Summer term with a trip to the Black Country Living Museum as part of their history topic on the Victorians. They found out about the mining industry and the different industrial processes that took place in our local area. They also went in to the more recent decades of the 50s and 60s to find out about what shopping was like in the past!
Year 4 also had their trips this week. They carried out a river study on the River Cole at Sarehole Mill. They looked at the features of the river and the different signs of pollution. They even plucked up the courage to walk across the stepping stones! Finally, they looked more closely at the current of the river and where the deepest parts of the river are located. The children were so sensible and such a credit to Colmore.
The newsletters are also accessible on the news section of our school website.
