A LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY TRIP National portrait gallery & tate Britain

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

As both Y12 and Y13 photographers are starting their new project, we did a joint trip to take inspiration from two London art galleries.

The day started with a photography and lighting workshop at The National Portrait Gallery. Students experimented with different compositions, colour combinations and backdrops whilst taking portraits in small groups.

TAYLOR WESSING PHOTO PORTRAITURE PRIZE

Once students had rotated around the different backdrops, we then had time to wander around the Taylor Wessing Photo Portraiture Prize exhibition.

Whilst entering the exhibition, students were introduced to last year's winning photographer Serena Brown and Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah.

The work was centred on the story of clean air activist Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, whose 9 year old daughter, Ella, was the first in the world to have air pollution listed as their cause of death after living next to the South Circular in Lewisham.

TATE BRITAIN: CULTURE AND HERITAGE DEPARTMENT

After the National Portrait Gallery students took photographs whilst walking through Westminster to Tate Britain.

At Tate Britain we had arranged for students to go behind the scenes and learn about various photography roles within the gallery. From the talk we gained an appreciation for the technical side to capturing identical images of the vast amount of work from the archives of the culture and heritage department. Staff also encouraged students to consider how their roles document the progress and evolution of the country.
