Canbury School Newsletter

1ST MAY 2026. ISSUE 399

Head's Welcome

Dear Families, It has been another action-packed week here at Canbury. As we head into the long weekend, I wanted to share some of the fantastic moments our students have experienced over the last few days. We’ve been making the most of the beautiful weather during our Games afternoons, PE sessions, movement breaks and free time. It’s been brilliant to see everyone outside, staying active, and enjoying the fresh air together. Some of our Key Stage 3 students and 6th formers had a very "fluffy" encounter this week! A trip to our local seniors' home allowed us to meet some incredibly tiny and soft baby chicks. It was a lovely intergenerational experience that brought a lot of joy to both our students and the residents. We are looking for more ways that we can build links with our local community here in Kingston. Our Creative Arts trip to Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter was a huge success. Students got a firsthand look at the "behind-the-scenes" secrets of cinematography and set design. It was truly inspiring to see how much work goes into creating that level of movie magic! We hope that your children came home inspired and perhaps with a deeper understand of the many many jobs and careers that might be open to them in the arts. Today’s assembly was a particularly proud moment for me. I am delighted to announce that I have awarded two more Headteacher’s Awards of the year (following Daisy A's) ! A massive congratulations to Logan and Pavel. All three of these students have reached a phenomenal milestone, earning 150 House Points since the start of the academic year. They have consistently demonstrated our core school values: Achieving | Inclusive | Respectful | Supportive Earning 150 points is no small feat, it shows a dedication to being a positive member of our school community every single day. Well done to you all! I’m already looking forward to handing out more of these awards in the coming weeks as more students approach this milestone. I hope you all have a restful and lovely long weekend. Remember school starts again on TUESDAY 5th May. Mrs Rich Head

What we've been up to

Lights, Camera, Action: Year 9 and 10 Visit Warner Bros. Studios

This week, our Year 9 and Year 10 students stepped off the bus and into the world of cinematic magic at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter. While the opportunity to walk through the Great Hall and Diagon Alley was a highlight, the trip offered a deep dive into the technical artistry behind one of the world's most successful film franchises. Beyond the iconic sets, our students participated in a specialised Set Design Workshop. This hands-on session pulled back the curtain on how concept art is translated into physical environments. Students explored the importance of scale, materials, and historical influences in creating believable worlds, providing valuable context for their own creative studies back at school. Trip Highlights The set design workshop gave us a technical look at how designers use white card models and blueprints to build immersive film environments. Observing the intricate detail in props and costumes, from hand-lettered envelopes to weathered architectural elements. Understanding the vast range of roles within the creative industries, from carpenters, sculptors and scenic painters to digital architects. More than 250 people were involved backstage in these different roles! It was a pleasure to see our students engaging so thoughtfully with the craft behind the screen. Whether they were aspiring designers or film fans, everyone returned with a new-found appreciation for the sheer amount of work that goes into every frame of a production.

Chicks at Galsworthy House

Over the last week, our KS3 students have visited Galsworthy House Care Home to see (and handle) some very cute chicks. All of the students loved the experience and truly showed our Canbury values whilst there. The chicks were wonderful - some were very excited, some fell asleep in our hands and a couple felt comfortable enough to bless us with a poo incident! We took a HUGE amount of photos so if you would like to see any others, please speak to Mrs Milestone.

Girls Multisports

The team this week had a great session in the sun playing some tennis. As well as practising skills such as their serve, they were also seeing who could hit Miss Kissane-Wood with their shots (with her agreement of course!)

Year 7 Social Group

The teamwork has continued in Social Group this week as Year 7's put the finishing touches to their posters. We are now looking forward to our social outing to Richmond Park in two weeks time.
