Class 8 Spring 2 Learning Journey Spring 22023/2024

LIRA

This half term in LIRA, we have been reading the Accidental Prime Minister! We have put a particular emphasis on sequencing and summarising the text using evidence to support our ideas.

Our second book was 'Malamander' by Thomas Taylor. We focused on making predictions based on the text and exploring the language that the author has chosen to use.

Literacy

In literacy, we have written on our stories in the style of Harry Potter. The children have produced their own versions of the battle scene from the Philosopher's Stone.

The children have applied their understanding of descriptive devices to make their stories exciting to read! During this unit, we focused on a range of skills such as: using different types of sentences, past tense, conjunction to extend our sentences and front adverbials to help our writing flow from one paragraph to the next.

In maths we have been exploring fractions, geometry, measures and statistics. We have focused on linking our understanding of multiplication to apply our knowledge to these concepts. Despite focusing on our areas of maths, we have continue to develop our understanding of times tables because we recognise how import this is.

Wider Curriculum

his half term, our focus has been on Design Technology. We have been looking at resistant materials in our topic 'The Wand Chooses the Wizard'. We received a letter from Hogwarts asking us to design our own wands.

Firstly, we explored a variety of magical wands from the Harry Potter universe. We took features from each wand that we liked and used them to design our own.

Then, we considered what materials would be the most suitable before creating our wand. We made sure our wand was aesthetically pleasing by deciding how we were going to give our wands a high-quality finish.

Science

In Science this half term, we have been looking at materials (states of matter). We explored:

  • The differences between solids, liquids and gases.
  • The density of liquid.
  • The effects of melting and cooling.
  • How liquid evaporates.
  • The water cycle.

As part of British Science week, we took part in additional experiments to explore the concept of time to investigate ways in this can be measured. We also took part in a team challenge where we worked in small groups to create the tallest spaghetti we could in 20 minutes.

Computing

In computing, we have explored how to use voice memo's. We have used the app to experiment with shortening and editing sound clips of our voices before planning and creating our own podcasts.

We then peers assessed each others work and discussed how we could improve the audio quality.

PE

This half term children have been participating in tag rugby. They have learnt range of skills such as travelling with the ball, passing, throwing and worked together in small groups to apply their skills to mini game.
