Welcome to the September 2024 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.
Strong foundations
The construction of primary substation compounds is one of Lydon Contracting’s specialist service offerings. Our site in Sheffield has its challenges with access, with it being on a newly constructed commercial development.
Once the excavations were complete and hoarding/fencing erected, there was no access for plant on 3 sides. The challenge was to keep manual handling to a minimum while keeping productivity at a good rate.
We decided to install a tower crane that will lift all reinforcement and shuttering into position, significantly reducing manual handling while keeping the construction build on programme.
On the National Express
Works have continued well in September for the new HV EV Infrastructure for National Express depot in Perry Barr Birmingham. Excavation and reinstatement of the new dual circuit duct installation along Aldridge Road have seen the civils duct installation works completed to the NGED Primary substation.
This section of works involved two traffic sensitive road crossing areas, also the crossing of the river Tame footway bridge. The final section to install is a 50m section over a Network Rail bridge (scheduled for early October) then we will be straight onto the cable installation.
Smooth finish
As part of the ongoing 33kV Primary Substation build we have been instructed to construct 2no. BT chambers for the onsite networking and a plinth for the Temporary Building Supply to site.
Following on from completing the infrastructure for the Stagecoach Oxford EV Charging plinths and HV substation Lydon Contracting have been appointed to undertake the construction the below ground infrastructure for a new vehicle washing System.
The works included excavation and the installation of concrete pads to facilitate the Britannia Bus Wash system, service ducting for water & power and a comprehensive drainage system comprising of interceptor tank, pump and break chamber, associated drainage runs and connection to Thames Water discharge chamber.
Night shift
With the Horizontal Directional Drill under the M11 successfully completed, part of our obligation to National Highways was to provide a post drill drainage survey.
The work involved closing the outer lanes of the M11 between junction 8 and 9 on the first night and closing the two inner lanes on the second night with the aid of IPV’s’.
The Drainage survey was successfully carried out safely over the two nights and a report will be issued to National Highways.

25th Anniversary of Lydon Contracting
Big Celebrations were enjoyed in September as we celebrated 25 years in business!
Brian Lydon was taught from a very early age by his father John Lydon to drive a digger and together they worked on ‘no job too big’ until 1999 when Brian made the decision to take the business to the next level, forming Lydon Contracting Ltd.
The business has grown from strength to strength and each year has added new members to the team, new plant and equipment and has been awarded new opportunities; all spear headed by Brian and his vision for strengthening the business and building strong working relationships. His passion for the business is the reason we are so successful today.
Happy 25th Anniversary Lydon Contracting!
