Canbury School Newsletter 22nd November 2024. ISSUE 350

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

There is only one thing I can think of to begin this week's Newsletter with, and it is this: three huge cheers for Year 11 student Logan who led our assembly today. Yes, you read that right. Logan led the school assembly on a roller coaster ride about his favourite passion - movies!

Indeed such was his passion for his meticulously researched presentation that he held the school in the palm of his hand and you could hear a pin drop. Students listened, put up their hands, answered questions, joined in clearly and were hooked. I was so impressed and heartened - both by Logan's amazing job and everyone else's support. I saw Canbury values of respect, support, achievement and being inclusive. Boom.

Enjoy the weekend.

Best wishes.

Mrs Rich – Head.

Sixth Form

Well done to Rhiannon and Lakshmi for demonstrating Canbury values last week, in this case…resilience. We are very proud of you both.

Working hard in the great outdoors.

Photography students enjoyed a chilly visit to Kew Gardens on Wednesday. As usual they behaved impeccably, delighting Mr Brinkmanis, Mrs Davies and Mr Hogan with their attitude towards their work. They spotted wildlife from very nearby (see the fox) and wondered at bananas growing in the green house. All in all a brilliant day was had by all, and some fabulous photographs were captured for their portfolios.

Pop, Crackle and Snap - fiery work in the Canbury Laboratory.

Whoosh! Reactions of group one metals work in the Laboratory today.

Mr Rush led a stupendous Science lesson this morning for Year 8 students. Ensuring they were behind the safety screen and wearing their goggles, he set about acting like a real scientist, setting fire to things and creating explosions. By the look on their faces (can you spot Lexi?) they were all desperate to have a go. Nice one Year 8.

Festive jumper alert - have you got yours?

Lovely work Issy. Well done.

Charity prefect Issy has designed and circulated this lovely poster. We will be raising money for Save the Children on the last day of term. For a suggested donation of £1 to £2 you may come to school either in full Christmas mufti or team a Christmas jumper with the rest of your school uniform - the choice is yours. If you don't have a Christmas jumper, then whatever you feel comfortable in is just fine too. Usual rules apply though - if your mufti is deemed unsuitable for school (too rude, too sparse, too much) it will be swapped for suitable items from the lost uniform box.......

Roll up, roll up, it's the great Canbury Art Gallery.

We've seen some fantastically varied work from GCSE students Eliot, Evan and Reenie this week. Scroll down to see what gloriously inventive work they came up with. We're wondering if we could set up a pop up Art shop - we think we'd have a few buyers!

Painting by Eliot.
Ink sketches by Ethan.
Faces by Reenie.

Largest-ever Canbury Cross Country team get on with the job - and step forward Olivia!

Writes Mr Barnes: "On Thursday morning this week our cross country team battled the freezing cold weather (and mud!) at the annual district cross country competition at Tiffin. It’s the largest team we’ve ever taken to district cross country and the students showed great resilience in the face of inclement weather and stiff competition. A special mention should go to Nico and Olivia. Nico for running a great race and also being so supportive of his team mates, and Olivia for mastering her pre-race nerves and performing fantastically. Olivia is also the first girl in recent memory to participate in district cross country."

Left to right - Hugo, Matt, Lloyd, Evan, Nico, Remi, and, drum roll please - Olivia!

Flora's off to pastures new - but not until next September!

Three cheers for Sixth Former Flora, who will leave Canbury next summer to take up a residential course at Fortune College in the New Forest. Read on for Flora's account of what a brilliant time she had and what a great future lies ahead for her.

Earlier this month I went down to the New Forest for a residential assessment at Fortune College for three days. Fortune College is an equine centre that helps young adults use their love and interests as a motivation to learn about horsemastership and bring confidence to ride and vault on a horse. Fortune college has two sites for students to stay if they are on the residential course. I was staying at Wootton Hall farm which is the main site for residential students. The other site is on the main college site at Avon Tyrrell which provides second and third year students the chance to live independently, but with the support of staff.

A picture we prepared earlier - Flora NOT at Fortune College, but still doing what she loves best on another day!

On the first and second days I completed a number of yard based learning tasks involving a private riding lesson and a group lesson. These two days I was asked to groom a horse, sweep the yard, clean the grooming kit, feed the horses, turn out the horses, muckout, clean the tack, and hay down the field. I was able to go swimming on Wednesday evening at a local leisure centre.

On the last day it was my group's turn to do money management day. This provides the chance to go to a nearby town. We planned our journey and what to buy. We had to travel by the mini bus to the train station and to the next stop. At the end of the day we got a drink at a coffee shop before we left to go back to Wootton Hall farm. I met my mum back at the college site and was over the moon to have a place for next year.

My favourite things I did would be going horse riding, helping the horses and going swimming. I am really excited about next year because I get to learn about my favourite animals and ride the horses and learn how to do vaulting.
