West Florida Research & Education Center 2025 Fall NEWSLETTER

From the Director

Harvest season has arrived, and expectations are high for good crop yields at the WFREC. We had plenty of rain during the growing season and our peanuts, soybeans, cotton, and corn (already harvested) look great. Barring a natural disaster or major mechanical failure of harvesting equipment, this year’s crop yields may equal or exceed that of last year’s, which was the best we’ve had since I became Director in 2014. Let’s hope it works out that way.

The WFREC undergraduate teaching program is well into the Fall semester. Our undergraduate numbers have reached pre-Covid levels and recruitment of new students is going well.

Our highly productive faculty have been busy with field work and other aspects of academia such as publishing refereed journal articles, garnering grant funds, and winning awards as shown in sections below. Our graduate students have been successful in winning presentation competitions and in getting scholarships and fellowships. We had several successful field days this summer at the Jay Research Facility that highlighted faculty led field research programs.

I’m happy to report that construction has begun on the graduate student dormitories at the Jay Research Facility. Dr. Unruh and I had a pre-construction meeting last month with the contractor, subcontractors, and IFAS Facilities personnel regarding the dormitories, and their schedule indicates an April 2026 completion. At this time, site preparation has been completed, and concrete footers have been poured. I’m hopeful that we will begin filling the dormitories with graduate students in Summer 2026. The dormitories will help ensure recruitment of highly qualified graduate students for our research programs.

I’m proud of the accomplishments of our productive faculty, staff, and students, and continue to believe the WFREC’s future is bright. I thank you for taking the time to read about our accomplishments, and I invite you to attend and participate in our upcoming field days that are mentioned in this newsletter. Until then, GO GATORS!

The Explorers Homeschool Co-op enjoyed an educational and fun-filled field trip to the UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center! A wonderful mix of elementary, middle, and high school students participated in the event. Students explored a variety of agricultural science topics, including: Plant Science: Growing Vegetables & Propagation Techniques Peanut Blasting and Grading Golf Course Turfgrass Management Entomology – the study of agricultural pests (good and bad bugs) We were also thrilled to have a visit from 4-H, who brought chickens and shared how students can get involved with 4-H programs. Despite the heat, it was a fantastic and engaging day for all. Special thanks to the presenters and staff who made this experience so memorable!
Dr. Hardeep Singh's Cropping Systems crew Nkem Nwosu, Kenlee Scott, and Magan Hammond out in the STEP Cotton field trouble shooting a soil moisture sensor with BMP Logic representative Justin Jones.
Dr. Bryan Unruh's turfgrass crew planting Bermuda grasses for the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP). Chase McKeithen and Jayson Ging will be looking at new varieties of Bermuda grasses that are being evaluated for different traits.
The WFREC had a farewell luncheon to celebrate and thank Dr. Paula-Moraes for her accomplishments during her time with us. She will be leaving us for a Tenured Associate Professor position at University of Nebraska-Lincoln with new responsibilities as an Extension specialist. This will include IPM and insect resistance management for pest associated with corn and soybean in the Eastern part of the state. Congratulations and you will be missed here at the WFREC.
