Cairo May 2025

Egypt (Part 2) - After a short flight from Aswan, the second part of this incredible voyage continues with three days in the dynamic city of Cairo. The first stop was the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. While the main focus of the new museum in Giza is impressive, the old museum boasts an incredible collection of sculptures and artifacts, particularly the most iconic pieces of King Tutankhamen.

Because the museum is conveniently located next to the Nile Ritz-Carlton, afternoon tea seemed like an ideal activity to engage in.

The Citadel of Saladin, a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, was constructed in the late 12th century. Access to the citadel is provided by the south entrance, which leads to the magnificent Muhammad Ali Mosque, famously known as the Alabaster Mosque. The terrace in front of the modern Police Museum offers some of the best views of Cairo.

The Muhammad Ali Mosque, a unique and prominent landmark in Cairo’s skyline, stands within the Citadel of Saladin towers. Its alabaster facade, columns, and porticos are a testament to the artistic craftsmanship that went into its construction.

Khal el-Khalili is a renowned bazaar nestled in the heart of Cairo’s historic center, is a labyrinth of alleys and walkways that lead to an astonishing array of artisanal objects and unique cafes.

While exploring Zamalek or the city center, you’ll find delicious food at reasonable prices. For a quick bite while sightseeing, locals in Egypt favor falafel, shawarma, and koshari. Egyptian cuisine is known for its distinctive spices, including cumin, turmeric, saffron, and coriander.

As you approach the Pyramids of Giza, the excitement mounts. The immensity of these structures is unimaginable until you see them for yourself. The area is so vast that time seems to move slower.

There’s nothing that seems more authentic than a camel ride in front of the pyramids, even though it’s quite touristy.

The Great Sphinx of Giza, with the Pyramid of Khafre in the background, is arguably the most iconic image of Egypt. The experience of seeing it for the first time is both familiar and new.

After years of delaying a trip to Egypt, eagerly awaiting the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the time has finally arrived. Despite the ongoing work on Tutankhamen Exhibit that is yet to debut, the museum boasts remarkable features that defy counting.

Ibn Tulun Mosque was built in the 9th century and it is the oldest mosque in Egypt. The structure is remarkably well-preserved and the view from the minaret is one of the best in Cairo.

The Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hasan, a monumental mosque and madrasa, is situated in Salah al-Din Square within the historic district of Cairo. It stands across from the Citadel of Saladin.

Fishawy Cafe, nestled in the Khal el-Khalili Bazaar in the heart of Cairo’s most vibrant part of the city, exudes a movie-set ambiance. While it may attract tourists, it offers a delightful respite between exploring the city’s attractions.

Friday marks the beginning of the weekend for most Egyptians, serving as a day of rest. The Al Emam El Hussein Mosque and the Al-Azhar Mosque are conveniently located near the bustling Khal el-Khalili Bazaar, infusing the city’s most dynamic area with an electrifying energy on such an important day.

Brunch at The Nile Ritz-Carlton offers an indulgent experience that’s hard to beat. With its array of seafood starters, salads, hot dishes, and complimentary items, as well as its Mediterranean specialties, you’ll be overwhelmed by the choices. Don’t forget to save room for the desserts!

Cairo Tower offers the most spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the city. While the wait can be long, purchasing the express pass allows you to use the credit towards a relaxing and enjoyable drinks or food at the restaurant, which provides a fantastic opportunity to unwind and savor the breathtaking view.

Park Al-Azhar, a beautiful place, inspires newlyweds and families for their weddings and outings. Its impressive landscaping and breathtaking panoramic views make it a truly captivating destination.
