one design - like no other
THE BRATT
Morgan Giles is internationally famous for the elegant design of his boats and very high quality of workmanship, having employed highly skilled craftsmen, shipwrights, engineers, joiners and riggers, many of whom are remembered in Teignmouth Devon today.
Built by the Harden and May Shipyard of Kingston Bridgeworks, Hampton Wick, speculated to originally have been registered in India for a client then finding its way to Canada's east coast. This may have been one of the few International 18s ever built. The sweet canoe stern, light displacement, abbreviated keel, spade rudder, all underly the remarkable prowess of this extraordinary sailing yacht. This 27.6' length overall, 18' waterline with a 5' beam and 4' depth is indeed an early design off the desk of Morgan Giles builders most likely in the early 1920s.
The sailing agility and remarkable upwind performance is of course the key to Morgan Giles design acumen with a captivating legacy of winning yachts within the 5 - 8 meter range. Further well documented evidence can be seen in this link:
Built of Honduras mahogany, carvel planked, copper fastened on light white oak frames with a 27.6' length, 18' waterline 5' beam and 4' depth from deck to keel, the vessel sits at present as straight and true as originally built with fair lines and an aggressive profile. Pushing the assets towards restoration, these elements have been professionally done, notably : New keel from existing original stem to stern tail feather, new keel bolts, tailfeather, floors, bilge stringers, deck beam shelves, deck beams, sistered ribs. Also; mast, boom, standing rigging, sails.
