Rylstone Review Term 3, Week 3, 7 August 2025

From the Principal’s desk

Welcome to Term 3 Week 3!

We’re excited to share all the wonderful learning activities and events we have planned for our school community.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY

Monday 21st July was a Staff Development Day and RPS hosted Ilford PS and Goolma PS staff in completing their CPR/ Anaphylaxis training. Staff participated in essential CPR and Anaphylaxis training to enhance the safety and well-being of our students. This training is crucial in equipping our team with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Led by certified instructors, the sessions covered vital topics, including the recognition of medical emergencies, proper CPR techniques, and the management of severe allergic reactions. Our staff engaged in hands-on practice, ensuring they are well-prepared to act quickly and confidently when necessary.

We believe that a safe learning environment is paramount, and this training underscores our commitment to the health and safety of every student. By investing in ongoing professional development, we are fostering a culture of preparedness and ensuring our staff is equipped to provide the best care possible.

STUDENT PROGRESS REPORT

Week one saw us send home our Semester One Reports in a new ‘parent friendly’ format. We hope everyone enjoyed reading the reports with their children. I particularly enjoy reading every student’s personal goal on the back page. We have some very thoughtful and mature goal setters here at RPS. Thank you to our teaching staff who put in long and late days ensuring assessment were completed and student feedback was exact and meaningful.

KINDER ORIENTATION

Our kindergarten orientation program is fast approaching. I will be running an Information Morning on Friday 12th September at 9:30am for any new families who have enrolled at Rylstone Public School for 2026, you don’t need to be a Kindergarten parent to come along!

Our amazing P&C will provide a scrummy morning tea and I encourage new RPS parents to take this opportunity to have a casual get together with our P&C parents and find out all about our school.

ANNUAL PLAY

Our annual play ‘The Wind in the Cudgegong’, has been changed to 5:30pm on Thursday 25th September (same day, later time). This was due to a conflict with a High School program running at the same time that day. It will finish close to 7pm, which will allow families to still have time for dinner. Students will come IN THEIR COSTUMES to the hall. Due to a variety of reasons, we need to limit seats to immediate family, so please let us know if you do not want all of your seats. More information on the ordering of tickets has been sent to families on Sentral and the School DOJO app.

SPORTING SCHOOLS

This term we have organised Maree from Hockey Australia to come and coach our students. Its been very successful and the students are enjoying it!

SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs Rankin for once again organising an amazing Athletics Carnival for our school! Despite the cold and dreary weather, the spirit of competition and camaraderie shone bright as students participated wholeheartedly in a variety of events.

It was truly inspiring to see all our students giving their very best, showcasing their talents and sportsmanship throughout the day. From sprints to long distance, shot put to long jumps, the enthusiasm was contagious, and everyone played a vital role in making the event a success.

A fabulous time was had by all, with smiles and cheers echoing across the field. The support from parents and staff added to the excitement, creating a wonderful atmosphere of community and encouragement.

Thank you once again to Mrs Rankin and all who contributed to making the Athletics Carnival a memorable day for everyone involved. We look forward to more exciting events in the future!

EDUCATION WEEK OPEN DAY

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along to experience Education Week Open Day at Rylstone Public School! It was truly an action-packed day filled with meaningful connections and joyful moments.

We were delighted to see so many families participating in class visits and parent-student learning conferences. Your engagement in your children’s education is invaluable and greatly enriches our school community.

The day continued with a lovely picnic lunch in our beautiful playground, where families and staff enjoyed the sunshine and each other’s company. It was wonderful to see everyone relaxing and sharing stories in such a vibrant atmosphere.

A special shout-out to Mrs Newham and the 5-6 students for organising an afternoon full of exciting games for both students and parents. The laughter and camaraderie made for a memorable conclusion to a fantastic day!

Thank you to Mrs Morris, Mrs McCouat and Mrs Fielder for manning the Book Fair stall!

Thank you once again for your support and participation. Your involvement helps to foster a strong sense of community at Rylstone Public School, and we look forward to many more collaborative events in the future!

We encourage all families to get involved in our school community. Your support and participation are important for the success of our programs and events. Please keep an eye on our school calendar, Sentral, Facebook and newsletters for updates on activities and volunteer opportunities.

As always, any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 6379 1404 or jodee.burcher@det.nsw.edu.au

In the classrooms

Kookaburras

We've had a fun and exciting start to Term 3, and I'm incredibly proud of our Kindergarten students for their exceptional progress across all learning areas. They are putting in their best effort and embracing feedback wonderfully.

In Literacy, we are learning about digraph sounds, which happen when two letters come together. We are also practicing how to write sentences correctly and making them longer by connecting a few together. After reading "The Big Book of Bugs," we have been writing facts about insects. We looked at how information texts are different from storybooks and learned many interesting facts about bugs.

In Maths, we have been exploring 2D shapes and their properties, as well as understanding the concept of area. We're also distinguishing between teen numbers and tens numbers.

In Science, we're learning about motion by exploring push and pull forces that make things move. We've done some fun activities with paint to see how we can make it move. We used sponges to create interesting artworks and then made marble art paintings without touching the marble. We experimented with making the marble move fast and slow.

This term in Art, we are studying different artists from around the world. We've explored Eric Carle's collage techniques in his books and admired Christopher Marley's intricate bug drawings. The students have created fabulous oil pastel bug drawings, adding remarkable detail.

Our dance practice has also begun, and Mrs Mac is diligently working on our Kookaburra costumes. We are so excited and really looking forward to showcasing all our hard work.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first hockey session. Despite some initial nerves, everyone had a fantastic time and is eagerly anticipating the next session.

Mrs Fielder will be taking Kindergarten for Thursday afternoons. The class has been learning about different places in Geography. We are looking forward to learning about the Japanese culture. In music this term Kindergarten are learning to sing songs and are going to explore Japanese music. This term we are introducing The Anxiety Project. The students will discuss all of the different feelings they experience and learn how they can manage them.

Well done, Kindy Kookaburras, for a fabulous start to Term 3!

Quolls

Term 3 has already seen some superb work from 1-2 Quolls!

We’ve been thinking about identifying and naming shapes as well as fast ways to add numbers in our Maths lessons.

In English we’ve been doing some fabulous reading and spelling with our focus letter patterns. We’re focusing on using rules when we add endings like ‘ing’, ‘ed’, and ‘er’ and ‘est’. We’ve also been listening to some stories from different cultures and thinking about writing descriptively about them. We crafted some excellent echidnas to go with our story about how the echidna got spikes.

There is much excitement about learning our dance for the End of Term Play. In small groups we thought about moves that could be included that were quoll-style. Our dance routine is beginning to come together… We sure do love to move and shake!

Last Friday we had a very enjoyable hockey session with Maree and we can’t wait to learn more!

I am so impressed that all students got straight back into the learning routine. This term is going to be a big one!

Goannas Back in Action!

1/2 Goannas have returned to the classroom with enthusiasm and dedication! The students have been eager to explore new concepts and skills, and I am proud to see them working hard to absorb all the knowledge they can. Just a quick reminder that homework will be sent out on Monday and is due back on Friday. Please remember to sign your child's reading logs, each week, as they work towards earning their reading awards. Your support in encouraging their reading habits is greatly appreciated!

Students crafted beautiful cinquain and acrostic poems inspired by the picture book Mallee Sky. They expressed their interpretations and emotions through poetry, capturing the essence of the story. To complement their work, students used Paint to recreate the book's cover, demonstrating their artistic talents alongside their written work.

1/2 Goannas have also been hard at work writing persuasive texts aimed at raising awareness about the plight of koalas in Australia, inspired by the picture book Koala Ark. Their texts are powerful calls to action, urging readers to consider the challenges faced by these beloved creatures. We invite you to check out the amazing paintings that accompany their texts and to look in your child's QR folder to read their compelling persuasive pieces.

Dance practice has proved to be very exciting for 1/2 Goannas and they have been putting in an enthusiastic effort as they work on their top-secret routine for the upcoming school concert! The atmosphere in the room is lively as students work together to practice and refine their moves.

During their Friday sport session, the Goannas displayed attentiveness while practicing their hockey skills. They listened carefully to instructions and demonstrated great teamwork and sportsmanship as they learned new techniques. It was fantastic to see their focus and determination.

Kangaroos

As we dive deeper into the term, we are excited to share the learning and achievements of our Stage 2 students. Here’s a glimpse into what we've been up to:

English

Our class has been thoroughly enjoying The Callers by Kiah Thomas. This engaging book has provided a rich platform for exploring characterisation. Students are exploring the personalities and relationships of the characters, which has sparked insightful discussions about how and why the story unfolds as it does. This focus on characterisation is helping students develop critical thinking and comprehension skills as they connect with the narrative.

Mathematics

So far this term in Mathematics, our students have been enhancing their mental arithmetic skills. We are focusing on strategies to add and subtract more efficiently, which not only boosts their confidence but also lays a strong foundation for future mathematical concepts. Through various activities, students are sharpening their ability to calculate quickly and accurately.

Geography

Our Geography unit has begun with an exploration of the Australian continent. Students are investigating its major natural and human features, gaining a deeper understanding of our nation's diverse landscapes and cultural heritage. As we progress, we will broaden our focus to include Australia’s neighbouring countries, examining their unique characteristics and fostering a global perspective among our students.

Science

This term's Science unit, Heat, Light, and Electricity, has captivated our students' curiosity. They are exploring how energy makes things happen, learning to describe the effects of heat energy, and understanding the process of conduction. Additionally, students are investigating the behaviour of light reflecting on a variety of surfaces and shadows resulting from interruption of light by an object. Our lessons extend to the sources and uses of electrical energy, with an emphasis on sustainable generation methods.

We are proud of the enthusiasm and dedication our students have shown in their studies. As always, thank you for your continued support in your child's learning journey. We look forward to sharing more exciting updates throughout the term.

Class Novel

This term we've been reading a new book in class called Worse Things and it has been very engaging and making us want to read more, even though we have read up to chapter four we can’t wait to see what happens in the book. Jack

Misunderstood, feeling alone but not for long.

This term we’ve been investigating the book ‘Worse Things’, by Sally Murphy that explores the personal life of three children between in year 5 and 6. In the book we learn about three characters who all feel displaced in a way. We are able to view the world through their eyes now that everybody’s opinion counts, no matter who they are. Alice

All alone under a tree trapped in the shadows of misery.

This term we have been working on a new book called Worse Things. It's about three characters and their names are Blake, Jolene and Amed. These characters all have a unique, special, sad and interesting story to tell about their life. They are in years 5 and 6 (I think.). The Author has used persuasive language and this outstanding text is a poem. Olivia C

The Anxiety Project

This term we have been learning different strategies to use when we are anxious. These strategies include belly breathing, alphabet legs, buddy breathing, five senses and breathing waltz. We also made chatterboxes which had all different ways to calm down your anxious thoughts. Caitlin & Denim

Maths

This term in Maths we have been learning about different strategies to solve addition and subtraction equations and some of them are constant difference, add to subtract, algorithms and levelling. We have been learning that we can apply different strategies to solve the same problem but some are more efficient than others. Lachlan & Orion

Art

This term we have enjoyed making our names into graffiti and around them we have been drawing things that we enjoy. Pat & Bentley

School Athletics Carnival

Last Thursday, we braved the cold and wet weather to complete our School Athletics Day. It was such a fun day, and despite the chill and damp spots in some areas, we successfully finished all the events. A big thank you to all the parents who came out to help and support their children; we truly couldn’t do this without you. I’d also like to thank Mrs Morris for all her hard work behind the scenes, as well as Mr Langdon and Mrs Newham for teaching the students the basics during fitness lessons over the past few weeks.

Thank you to the students who gave it their all. I was so impressed with their determination and willingness to try. It’s always a joy to see such smiles on their faces, even when they have just completed a 1500m event.

Mrs Rankin

State Cross Country Championships

On Wednesday, July 23rd July, Wyatt went to the Sydney Equestrian Centre to compete in the State Cross Country event. He achieved a personal best and mentioned that the competition was tough, but he felt it was a great experience. Well done, Wyatt, for representing our school so well!

SRC Update

Exciting Activities and Fundraising Event!

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) is hard at work this term, volunteering their break times to organise fun activities for all students! Students can play basketball, practise their soccer skills, visit the library, or improve their handball techniques during breaks.

In addition to these activities, the SRC has voted to host a special fundraising event - an ‘End of Winter Pyjama Day’ on Thursday, 28th August. Students are invited to wear their winter PJs (slippers permitted in the classrooms but regular school shoes must be worn in the playground) and help raise funds for new outdoor toys that can be enjoyed during break times.
