February communiqué

Dear Church,

“...This is That...” (Acts 2:16) What is This?

The Church was born on the day of Pentecost as described in Acts 2:1-21. It caused a mighty stir among the religious, commoners and internationals alike in the city. It was indeed both a spiritual event with the baptism of the Holy Spirit and a supernatural event with the manifestation of tongues, fire and sound of a mighty rushing wind. It was too hard to articulate and too much for the human mind to understand such a mighty display of divine power.

It caused amazement, perplexity and resulting in confusion and others mocking whilst many asking, “what could this be….mocking, they are full of new wine…” v12-13. It was in this context that Peter stood up and declared, “...THIS IS THAT…” v16

Acts 2:14–21 "But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God. That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants. I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above. And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved."

Peter was able to explain to the people that what has happened before them is the fulfilment of Scriptures. “...This is That…”v16

My question today is when we look at the present church, can we say confidently, we have a church that is patterned after God’s design and declare, "...This is That…” which was written in Scriptures, described in Acts, modelled after apostolic teaching. Peter declared, "...This is That…”(Acts 2:16) as we look at Metro Tabernacle, today, we need to ask, “What is This?"

  • Where is the life changing power of the Holy Spirit that transforms ordinary believers, “unlearned and ignorant…” (Acts 4:13) into mighty disciples?
  • Where are the converts who begin their journey of faith because they are, “Cut in their hearts…” v37?
  • Where are the sense of amazement in the eyes of the unbelievers and sceptics because they cannot “size up” the church and yet cannot deny the reality of God’s power?
  • Where are the spiritual and supernatural phenomena and signs and wonders?

In so many ways, we have strayed away from God’s pattern for His believers and His Church, in our quest to be more connected, contemporary, understandable and acceptable. As I study the Scriptures, I notice God has never lowered down His standard, He has always required faith to reach, touch and understand Him.

Romans 1:17 “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Where do we begin?

A discerning heart that is open to the revelation of Scriptures, a return to the primacy of prayer and a resolute reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit.

I want to invite you to join like-minded disciples in Metro Tabernacle every Wednesday for Prayer Meeting to begin with. The acts of the Holy Spirit through the believers unfolded when they obeyed the command of Jesus in Luke 24:49.

“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

God bless you.

Your Pastors,

Pastor Ong and Pastor Nancy
