FSMS Band Back to School Newsletter 2025-26

Welcome Back for the

2025-26 School Year!

We hope everyone had a fantastic summer and that you are ready for the new school year to begin! We are so proud of last year's band students with their commitment and accomplishments throughout the 2024-25 school year and we are confident that the 2025-26 FSMS Bands will continue to build upon the reputation of "Tradition of Excellence" that has been established over the past 24 years. This success is due to the students understanding the importance of good work habits, dedication, self-discipline, responsibility, perseverance, teamwork, and hopefully recognizing how these characteristics will help them be successful in band, as well as in all their future endeavors.

This newsletter will inform you of the many events and activities we have planned throughout the year, as well as give you important information regarding your child's participation in the FSMS Band Program.

Please take the time to read all of the information to gain a thorough understanding of the procedures and goals for the band program. As you read through the newsletter, you will see that some activities will be for all band students, while others will be only for certain students. Many of the items discussed will not apply to beginning band students, but the information will give you an idea of what your child has to look forward to in the future. If you have any questions concerning your child's participation in an activity, please call or email us for further clarification. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is a requirement for being a member of the band program.

Presto Assistant

This year the district Fine Arts department has transitioned to using Presto Assistant as a way to communicate with parents and students. From your student's Presto account you will be able to check event dates/times, email the band directors, receive text message reminders, view school-owned instrument checkout, fill out forms and other program specific information. Parents will receive a welcome email in which you will need to click on the "Get Started" link in the Welcome Email and use their Member Claim Code to finish setting up their member profile.

  • The "Get Started" link in the Welcome Email is good for 48 hours and a one-time use.
  • If a member sees the "Sad Cat" page, they can click the "Resend Email" button to receive a new verfication email at the same email address.
  • Students and parents should click on the link in the Welcome Email. They will continue to set up their member profile which should take them 5-10 minutes to complete. Provide a link to this support article to give some guidance through the process.
  • Any organization members — students, parents, or directors — who forget their password can click on the "Forgot Password" link on the login form to reset their password.

Private Lessons

Private lessons provide students with weekly individual help on their specific needs and also help them develop their playing skills more rapidly. Students who enroll in private lessons will receive a weekly half hour lessons one-on-one with a professional on their instrument. The FSMS band directors take great care in selecting private lesson teachers who will provide a quality learning experience that is cohesive and consistent with the pedagogy that students are receiving in class. Private lessons give students an advantage as they are learning new skills on their instrument and preparing for individual playing activities; such as, playing tests, All-Region Band auditions, Solo and Ensemble Contest and performances. Through participation in the private lesson program, students become better individual performers, which in turn strengthens the overall FSMS band program.

Private lessons are not required, but are encouraged for all students regardless of their playing abilities. Performing band students will begin lessons close to the start of school and beginning band students will not start lessons until sometime near the end of the first 9 week grading period, or at the beginning of the second 9 week grading period, once they have learned enough to fill a 30 minute private lesson time.

Private lessons will take place at Fort Settlement MS and will be held in person.

The cost for these lessons will be $30 per half-hour lesson (one per week) based on the teacher's credentials. We know that you will find this to be a great return on your investment, especially if it is compared to the cost of most other private lessons.

Please keep in mind that this is the sole source of income for many of these instructors. Therefore, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we ask that you consider this a school year-long commitment when you enroll your child in the private lesson program.

If you are interested, please respond soon so we will know if we need to hire any additional instructors. Private teachers like to teach at FSMS, but if we wait too long to hire them they may have already accepted teaching positions at other schools.

In order to reserve a spot for your child with one of our private lesson instructions, please click on the link below. Please note this is the same link that was emailed to you in July/August so if you have already replied there is no need to fill out the form again.

Calendar

On the links below you will find a calendar for the performing bands and beginning band that includes most of the performances and other events that will occur this school year. These calendars will also be posted in your child's band schoology course as well. Please mark these dates on your family calendar, and notify us immediately of any conflicts in the space provided on the return pages found in Schoology.

We try to keep you informed well in advance of upcoming activities, because it is vital to the success of the band program that all students are in attendance for all events. Please understand that the dates and events on these calendars are subject to change and we will keep you updated of any changes throughout the school year.

SECTION REHEARSALS

Morning Sectional 7:30-8:30 am

Afternoon Sectional 4:20-5:20 pm

HONORS BAND

Every Honors Band student will have a one-hour section rehearsal each week throughout most of the school year. We will establish a schedule that will be used until after region band auditions in November. It may be necessary to make some adjustments when we find out who made the volleyball team. In November, a new schedule may be set up to accommodate any new conflicts which may arise, such as basketball season. As always, we will strive to arrange a schedule which avoids conflicts with the students’ other activities (i.e. athletics, dance lessons, etc.) when possible. Priority will be given to other school activities when trying to resolve a conflict. In addition to this weekly section rehearsal, every member of the Honors Band is encouraged to make arrangements to come in for additional time each week (in the morning or afternoon). This additional time will be used for individual and small group practice, student tutoring, as well as getting help from the directors in preparation for region band auditions, solo & ensemble contest, concert and contest performances. During this additional time, the students can help each other and learn how to work together as a team. We have used this type of peer tutoring more in the past couple of years and we have found it to be a valuable part of the band’s progress.

SYMPHONIC & CONCERT BAND

Region Sectionals (Symphonic & Concert) - From August until November, Symphonic and Concert Band students interested in learning the region band audition music will be required to attend a 30 minute sectional each week. A student’s attendance at these sectionals does not mean they have to audition for the Region Band, rather the main goal is for these sectionals is to help the students improve their playing skills. The decision on whether a student will actually audition for region band can be made in October when we see how each individual student is progressing. After determining which students are interested in attending these sectionals, a schedule will be established.

Regular Sectionals (Symphonic & Concert)- In addition, section rehearsals will be required for all Symphonic Band members throughout most of the school year. These rehearsals will be scheduled as needed. Concert Band students may have section rehearsals as needed throughout the school year.

BEGINNING BAND

There are no required rehearsals before or after school for these students, except for the rehearsals shown in April & May that are listed on the Beginning Band Calendar.

Please Make Sure Your Child Is On Time For All Rehearsals

To Be Early Is To Be On Time

To Be On Time Is To Be Late

To Be Late Is To Be Less Than You Can Be

EHS & CHS Football Game

Students in the Concert, Symphonic and Honors Band will attend and perform in a high school football game for the future high school they are zoned to.

This event gives the students an opportunity to see what they have to look forward to in high school and we know everyone will have a great time!

All Honors, Symphonic and Concert Band students are required to attend this event . The Elkins/Clements HS Football Game will be on Thursday, October 30th at Hall Stadium. A detailed itinerary will be sent home closer to the event date.

Band Class Pictures

On Tuesday, November 18th we will take band pictures during the classes. Symphonic, Concert and Honors Band students will wear the 2025-26 concert uniform discussed below. The students must be dressed in the 2025-26 concert uniform to be in the group picture.

Beginning Band students will be asked to wear their FSMS Band shirt. There is no charge for students to be in the group picture which will be used for the FSMS Yearbook. All students will take an individual picture with their instrument to use in the composite group photo. Students will have the option to purchase the group and/or the individual pictures. Payment for pictures must be brought to school by Wednesday, November 19th. A brochure explaining the different picture packages available will be sent home several days before picture day.

In order for your child to be included in this picture, you must check the following items in the online “Parent and Student Consent Checklist”. In the section “School Related use of Student Information” a checkmark must be placed in both boxes. If you do not check these items, your child cannot be included in concert programs, FSMS newsletters, yearbook or any other recognition.

Morning and Afternoon Band Hall Procedures

ALL BAND STUDENTS - Band students who do not have morning rehearsals will be asked to proceed to the commons or courtyard with the rest of the student body. At 8:35 a.m., duty teachers in these areas will release all band students to bring their instruments to the band hall. Your instrument will be your pass. All band students will then remain in the band hall until approximately 8:45 a.m. when the rest of the student body is dismissed to go to their hall lockers. At 8:45 a.m., or when the rest of the student body is dismissed from the commons, all the students in the band hall will also be dismissed to go to their hall lockers.

STUDENTS WITH MORNING REHEARSALS (Honors, Symphonic & Concert Bands) - Students should enter the building through the band exterior doors which are located on the left of the front circle drive. Please drop your child off at the front circle drive car ramp and students will use the sidewalk that curves to the front of the school. Please do not use the bus ramp to drop off or pick up your child. Students entering the band hall in the mornings will not be allowed to leave the band hall to go to their hall locker until the remainder of the school is dismissed from the commons. Students will only be dismissed from the band hall to go to the library or to see another teacher if they have been given a pass to do so on the previous day.

STUDENTS WITH AFTERNOON REHEARSALS (Honors, Symphonic and Concert Bands) - Students should be in the band hall by 4:20 p.m. and they should go to their hall locker prior to coming to the band hall for their rehearsal. Students will not be allowed to go to their locker after the rehearsal. All students in the band hall for afterschool activities will exit the building through the outside band hall doors at the front circle drive. Please pick your child up on the front circle drive and not at the bus ramp on the side of the school.

STUDENTS IN ATHLETICS (Honors, Symphonic and Concert Bands)- Morning - These students will go to athletics first and then their band rehearsal. These students will be dismissed from their athletic practice at a specified time agreed upon by the band directors and coaches. They should come to their band rehearsal dressed out and then they will be allowed to go and change into their school clothes at 8:30 a.m. Afternoon -These students will come to band first and then their athletic practice. They should go to the locker room immediately at 4:10 p.m. when school is dismissed to change into the athletic wear and then be in the band hall by 4:20 p.m. Football players should bring your pads to the band hall, but you do not need to be wearing them. Students will not be allowed in the locker rooms between their band and athletic practice. At a specified time agreed upon by the band directors and coaches, the students will leave the band hall through the outside doors to go to their athletic practice.

STUDENTS TAKING PRIVATE LESSONS (Honors, Symphonic, Concert and Beginning Band Students) Students taking private lessons may remain in the band hall after school until their scheduled lesson time. They are encouraged to do homework or practice during this time. These students should go to their hall locker at 4:10 p.m., when school is dismissed, and be in the band hall by 4:20 p.m. Students will not be allowed to go to their hall locker after their lessons. Students going home after school and then returning for lessons at a later time should enter the band hall through the outside band hall or orchestra doors that face the front circle drive and not use the commons entrance. All students will exit the band hall through the outside doors to the band hall when they have finished their lesson. Student athletes taking private lessons will also need to follow the guidelines listed above under “Students In Athletics”.

For band activities which occur before or after school hours, please drop off and pick up your child on the front circle drive by the outside band hall entrance. NOT AT THE BUS RAMP ON THE SIDE OF THE SCHOOL.

Policy for Student Pick Up at Fine Arts Activities

For band activities which occur before or after school hours, please drop off and pick up your child on the front circle drive. NOT AT THE BUS RAMP ON THE SIDE OF THE SCHOOL/COMMONS.

It is important that all students are picked up on time after any band activity (parties, rehearsals, performances, etc.). Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the occurrence of students being picked up late. Last year, at almost every function, there were at least 1-2 students who were picked up between 30-45 minutes late. We are glad to offer these additional activities for the students, but please show respect for our efforts by making sure your child is picked up on time.

Late Pickup Policy - The fine arts department has implemented a policy in an attempt to help with this problem. If your child is picked up 15 minutes or more late from an event, the parent will be asked to sign a form stating the date, the scheduled pick-up time and the actual pick-up time. If a student is picked up late on multiple occasions, the matter will be referred to an administrator.

INSTRUMENT STORAGE AT SCHOOL

Students will be assigned a locker in the main band hall, the ensemble room, or in the instrument storage room and a combination lock will be issued to each student. Students must use the lock provided by the band, and there will be a $8.00 charge for a lost lock.

It is required that all students keep the combination locks locked on the locker at all times (even at night when they take the instrument home).

Students are required to take their instrument home every night.

IMPORTANT - Students who do not keep their lock locked may have this privilege taken away. We are interested in making sure that your investment is safe at all times, so please see that your child understands the importance of being responsible in storing his or her instrument.

Grading Policy

Students’ grades will be a combination of written and performance assessments along with grades for class participation and responsibility. Progress reports and nine week grades will be an average of a students’ daily and major grades.

Daily Grades - 50%

  • Weekly practice record grade: Due on a specific day and only accepted one day late (-10) or two days late (-20). Can only be turned in late 2 times each 9 week grading period, which is an exception to the school’s late work policy. See the Practice Record Section below for details.
  • Worksheets
  • Class Participation
  • Responsibility Grades: Having equipment & supplies in class, meeting deadlines, etc.
  • Playing Tests: recently introduced material
  • Homework
  • Schoology Assignments
  • Schoology Recording Assignments
  • Sectional Rehearsals* and Full Band Rehearsals*

Major Grades - 50%

  • Playing Tests: long-term assignments
  • Projects (usually recorded assignments)
  • Quizzes
  • Schoology recorded assignments
  • Performances*

*The information below is part of the Band Addendum to the FBISD Extracurricular Handbook and pertains to the items in the above list that are followed by an asterisk. Students may have points deducted as follows:

  • Unexcused absence from a rehearsal that is an extension of the classroom activities such as section rehearsals = Daily Grade Deduction
  • Unexcused absence from a performance that is an extension of the classroom activities, such as school concerts, which do not meet the definition of extracurricular = Major Grade Deduction

The grading system we use is balanced so that a student does not have to make “A’s” on all performance grades in order to receive an “A” in the class. As long as a student turns assignments in on time, participates in class, and attends all rehearsals and performances, the student can have “average” performance grades and still receive an “A” for the nine weeks. We want the FSMS band program to accommodate students of varying musical interests and musical talents. All students should have the opportunity to enjoy the “band experience” and earn an “A” as long as they are responsible and put forth their best effort.

Tryout Procedures- Prior to the academic school year, ALL seventh and eighth grade students will audition for placement in one of the bands. This placement will be determined by an audition on music materials selected by the director and on the student's past performance. NO STUDENT WILL BE ENROLLED IN ANY BAND/ORCHESTRA UNTIL THIS AUDITION IS COMPLETED.

Practice Records

All band students will be required to take their instruments home on a daily basis, and a portion of each nine-weeks grade will be determined by the amount of time students practice at home. This time will be recorded on a practice record (see the sample below), verified by a parent signature, and turned in to their director each week for a daily grade.

The grading scale for the Honors, Symphonic and Concert Bands will be different than for the Beginning Band students. Please see the back of the practice record your student receives for details on grading.

We will introduce and practice new material and concepts in class, but regular individual practice is necessary for students to master these concepts and skills. Please read the section on “Helpful Hints” below that offer suggestions concerning your child’s home practice sessions.

Practice records for the Honors, Symphonic and Concert Bands are due on Monday and will start during the last week of August.

Practice records for Beginning Band students will be due on Tuesdays and it will be a few weeks before these students will be using the practice records.

Students can turn in practice records late (one day late minus 10 points or two days late minus 20 points) two times during each 9 week grading period. After the 2nd late practice record within each 9 week grading period, the students will receive a “25” if turned in late. Please understand that this is an exception to the school late work policy.

Helpful Hints

Learning to play a musical instrument is a three-way partnership composed of the teacher, the student, and the parents. Most parents are eager to be active participants in this endeavor, but often are at a loss when it comes to guiding their children in developing meaningful practice habits. When it comes to assuring your child’s success in band or speeding progress in reaching musical goals, there is no single factor more important than a parent’s sincere, active interest in their child’s musical experience. As your child advances in his or her study of music, and as he or she is presented with increasingly challenging material, the regularity and quality of home practice becomes critical. Some of the specific things you can do to assist your child are listed below.

  • Set aside a regular time and a regular place to practice. A practice area free from distraction and with the proper materials (music stand, a chair that promotes good playing posture, etc.) is very important.
  • Help your child keep a daily record of his or her practice sessions.
  • Praise your child for his or her hard work. An encouraging remark made during practice time or a compliment at dinner time can reap large rewards.
  • Attend all concerts and performances and ask friends and relatives to attend also. Young musicians are more successful in the activities in which their parents show a genuine interest.
  • Talk to your child about what he or she learned today in band class. Being interested and actively involved in your child’s progress is a necessity.
  • Help your child understand that the more he or she practices now, the more fun and enjoyment he or she will have later. Your child may lose some interest in practicing periodically, but experience shows that with your steadfast encouragement, this cycle is short-lived. The interest you demonstrate may even make them want to practice more.
  • If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact one of the band directors.

Braces? - Please Plan Carefully

Most students have braces at some time during their middle school years and this generally does not create a major problem with the student play-ing an instrument as long as some planning is included into the decision of when to get the braces put on and removed. When the braces are put on or taken off, it usually requires at least 2-3 weeks and maybe as long as 2-3 months for the student to become accustomed to playing his/her instrument with (or without) the braces. For some students, the adjustment period when the braces are taken off is minimal, but most students require the 2 week to 2 month adjustment period after having the braces put on. Students playing Flute or Brass instruments need to be careful, because the adjustment time can sometimes be 2-3 months. Please consider upcoming auditions, contests, and concerts when scheduling any type of oral work that might effect your child’s ability to play his/her instrument. It can be very discouraging for a student to put forth the effort in preparation for a performance and then be unable to participate because of braces or some other type of oral work. Since a band performance is usually a team effort, this type of situation can also be detrimental to the overall performance of the entire ensemble. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions concerning oral work you have scheduled for your child.

Step-Up Instruments

If you are considering purchasing a step-up instrument for your child, please make sure and discuss this with the band directors before making your purchase. For most instruments, there is one specific brand and model considered the best, although there are many different brands on the market. Often, we are able to get a better price on the instrument for you than you would be quoted by going directly to the music store. We are also able to have several instruments brought to school so the students and their private lesson teachers can try them out and pick the best one. Even instruments that are the same brand and model usually play differently and it is very important that they be tried out by an experienced player in order to select a quality instrument. We want to ensure that you get a quality instrument for your investment, so please give us the opportunity to share the knowledge we have acquired while working with the various brands and models of instruments. Sometimes the step-up instruments you will find if you go into the local music stores have already been tried at local schools and returned to the store because they were not the quality of instrument for which we are searching. Please let us help you if you decide to purchase a new instrument, because we want to make sure your child gets a great instrument.

Class Supplies & Instrument Repair

All students are responsible for having the necessary equipment and supplies to participate in class each day. If repair is needed on your instrument, please let one of the directors look at it before you send it to the repair shop, because quite often, we are able to repair it for you. The following is a list of the materials that the students will need for their band class.

Beginning Band Students

  1. Instrument with name tag on the case.
  2. The accessories listed on the information sheet emailed to you with the final instrument placement. Some of the items can be left at home and this will be discussed with the students during the first few days of class.

The FSMS Band Parent shirt will be a short sleeved polo style shirt with an embroidered logo. The price will be $30.00 (which includes tax). XXL and XXXL shirts will be $32.00. Plan to wear the shirts at all of our activities this year to show your support for the FSMS Band. We need a minimum of 20 shirts to place this order.

FSMS Band Donation Drive

We are all fortunate that FBISD understands the importance of a well-rounded education for the students, and consequently the funding provided by the district for equipment and instructional supplies is sufficient; however, due to the current circumstances, all budgets have been reduced during the past few years. Hopefully, our annual fundraiser will again be a success and we will be able to make up this budget shortfall in order to continue providing all of the educational, enrichment and social activities which are so important in maintaining a quality band program.

The FSMS Band Program has set its annual fundraiser from November 11th- December 3rd. Please keep this date in mind as your child is involved in other fundraising activities throughout the year and encourage your child to participate in this activity. We will send more information home concerning this important activity as the date approaches. We have implemented a “Donation Drive” in lieu of a product-based fundraiser. The Donation Drive has proven to be very successful and in previous years the students raised $26,000 in donations. In looking at previous years' budgets, we typically spend on average $25,000 for various educational and social activities throughout the school year so we would like to keep this year's fundraiser goal the same.

In order to meet this goal we ask each student to raise $100 in donations from family and friends. This would be an average of $10 for ten individuals interested in supporting the FSMS Band. In order for this to be successful, we need everyone's help. We will provide a letter that can be given to family and friends asking for their support. More information will be provided at a later time.
