OCTOBER IN NEW FAIRFIELD VOLUME 3, ISSUE 10 || OCTOBER 2024

Fall is in full swing with the month of October! The chill in the air reminds us to start preparing our homes for the cold months ahead. The holidays are just around the corner and our minds turn to them and all that they bring – decorating, gifts, and most importantly, family and friends.

Schedule in time to observe the beautiful autumn colors that surround us, take a walk, go apple picking (and bake or eat an apple pie) and enjoy the coziness of a fire in the fireplace and a comfortable sweater.

Sign up for the New Alert System

***Please remember to sign up for the New Alert System!***

The town has transitioned to a new alert program called Everbridge. The Everbridge program will be able to alert our residents as our past program did, however, it also gives us more features that we are excited to be able to use. This program is already being used by the State of Connecticut, as well as many other municipalities and schools throughout the state. Enrollment is completely free and voluntary. Residents have the option of providing multiple phone numbers or email addresses to be sure the alert is received.

In addition to sending out emergency alerts (road closures, etc...), we will now have the ability to notify regarding town events (community events, Town Meetings, etc...), weather alerts, senior center alerts, and more. The program is able to send notifications based on neighborhoods and locations, as well.

**We are asking everyone to enroll for the new program, even if they have already enrolled for the previous one. Some of the phone list we had was quite outdated and we would like to be sure that everyone is getting the information that they are opting to receive. While signing up, please be sure to select whether you would like to receive All Alerts, or just some of them.

You can click on the QR code below to enroll:

FALL CLEANUP AND MAINTENANCE

Now that Fall is here and the harsh weather won't be far behind, there are some important tasks you can do around your home to be prepared. Here are a few of them:

-Clean your gutters to be sure they drain properly and are not clogged by frozen leaves

-Replace your furnace filter and have a maintenance check on your furnace before you need it. Now is also a good time to drain and check your water heater.

-Rake your leaves to get them off of your lawn

-Caulk and replace weather stripping around windows and doors if you notice any air leaks

-Drain your garden hoses and turn off outdoor faucets to avoid damage from freezing water and winterize any outdoor sprinkler systems

-Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

-Check and have your chimney, fireplace and wood stoves cleaned, as well as your gas fireplaces

-Inspect your roof for damage, wear and leaks

These are some general tasks to think about – you will surely have specific ones that relate to your home as you prepare for the colder months.

Walk to End Alzheimer's on September 22nd at New Fairfield High School

Photos by Lee Scott, drone-ct.com

From: Kristen Cusato | Director of Communications, Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter & New England Research Champion l kmcusato@alz.org | alz.org/ct:

Rebels Stadium at New Fairfield High School turned purple Sunday September 22nd, as hundreds gathered to Walk to End Alzheimer’s!

The annual event is held in 6 communities across Connecticut every Fall and raises money to help the Alzheimer’s Association care for the 80,000 people in our state living with Alzheimers and their caregivers. Funds raised also go towards advancing critical research to identify new treatments and ways to prevent the disease.

Chaz of Chaz and Aj in the morning on 99.1 WPLR served as emcee, and shared that his father passed from the disease.

Good news: the Western CT Walk to End Alzheimer’s surpassed its fundraising goal on the day of the walk.

If you have any questions about Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, call our 24 seven helpline at any time 1-800-272-3900.
