My Sweet Escapes
Museum Description: Have you ever needed to get away? Sometimes you don't need to go far and simple walk outside can clear your mind and make you feel at peace. The paintings I choose for my museum are outdoor spaces and nature. These landscape paintings brought back a flood of memories when I was looking through them so I would like to share them through my museum.
Impact Statement: When I looked through these paintings I found myself remembering every time I needed to be outdoors to give myself time to reset. With this museum I hope to show you the inner peace the outdoors brings to me. I would also like to show people how the outdoors is a reminder that we are alive and constantly surrounded by beauty.
Room One: Leisurely Stroll
- Woman in the Garden, Claude Monet, 1866
- The Path Through the Woods, Ivan Shishkin, 1880
- Avenue In Voyer d'Argenson Park At Asnieres, Vincent van Goh, 1887
- The Rose Garden, Aagaard, Carl Frederick, 1877
Woman in the Garden, Claude Monet, 1866
(Content, Form): The subject matter that is represented is a woman in a white dress holding an umbrella that acts a focal point drawing our eyes to her in contrast with the background complementary colors of green and red. We see many organic lines reminding us that this is a part of nature. Texture of the painting is implied with how the trees look to be rough and the grass seems soft to the touch. This picture is one of the many that Monet paints that showcase his love of nature. If Monet can create hundreds of pieces depicting his love for the outdoors you can only imagine how much time he spent outside. Seeing this serves as a reminder for those of us who have even a small backyard to go out there and enjoy.
The Path Through the Woods, Ivan Shishkin, 1880
(Content, Form): In the painting we see several people walking through a pathway in the woods. The towering trees take over almost the whole painting on both sides giving us a sense of balance. There is an implied line leading our sights down the walkway by using high key with a lot of light in that area to make it look more realistic. The medium of this painting is oil on canvas. When we see this painting we are reminded that taking time out of our busy schedules to take a walk has been around for centuries. Taking a small stroll can be as short as 5 minutes.
Avenue In Voyer d'Argenson Park At Asnieres, Vincent van Gogh, 1887
(Content, Form): The setting of the painting shows a tree lined walkway. There is a single person that is walking on the left side staying close to the trees, perhaps trying to stay away from running into other people. The colors that are used here analogous with the blend of yellows, oranges, and greens used. It makes the colors blend together giving it an atmospheric perspective. Although you sometimes enjoy the company of others sometimes the company of your own thoughts are all you need. Van Gogh shows us how enjoying your own time with nature can be a beautiful moment.
The Rose Garden, Aagaard, Carl Frederick, 1877
(Content, Form): The subject matter of this painting is a rose garden and in the distance two small figures are seen. There are pink and white roses surrounded by green foliage. There is symmetry between both sides of the painting highlighting and pulling our eyes towards the couple shown in the middle of the painting. Meeting up with a friend or a lover makes this outdoor escape more thrilling. Having company while enjoying nature gives you time away from your solitude.
Room 2: A Walk Through Winter
Even in the coldest days we can come out and have some fun. My favorite vacations throughout the year are those where I can be outside in the snow. From making snowmans, snow angels or even snowshoeing there is no reason to stay indoors in the winter. Taking a walk in the snow helps us not overheat while doing strenuous hikes.

A Cart on the Snowy Road at Honfleur, Monet Claude, 1865
(Content): The painting depicts a snow-covered road in the countryside near Honfleur, a small town in northern France. A simple wooden cart, pulled by a horse or ox, moves slowly along the road, its wheels carving faint tracks in the fresh snow. The road is flanked by barren trees, their skeletal branches arching over the scene, and by the fields blanketed in snow. In the background, the faint outline of a village or farm buildings emerges through the mist. Having spent time in the snow made me realize how much I enjoy being there. So many people don't like to be outside during this time of the year but I encourage you to give it a try.

The towering pine and spruce trees stretching toward the sky as the forest floor is blanketed in deep snow, while dead tree trunks and fallen branches punctuate the landscape, emphasizing the rugged, untouched nature of the terrain. the atmosphere is that of isolation and quiet solemnity, evoking the formidable beauty and solitude of the northern wilderness. There are no signs of human presence, reinforcing the sense of pristine and uninhabited natural world.
When the West with Evening Glows, Farquharson Joseph, 1901
(Content): The painting shows a serene winter landscape at sunset. The scene likely features a snow-covered field or woodland, a common theme in Farquharson's works, golden light over the snowy terrain. In the background, there may be solitary figures, such a s a sheep or a shepherd, landing a sense of life and scale to the vast, tranquil environment. The glowing sky, transitioning from fiery orange and pink hues to cooler purples and blues, contrasts beautifully with the cold, white snow. This contrast of warmth and chill evokes a peaceful and calm mood.
