Spotlight on Safeguarding

All children need boundaries and discipline, and this guide helps you develop what works for you and your child.

Online Safety: Advice for parents of children under 10 years old

  • Enable access to devices with limited features - Device usage at this age is best kept to devices with limited capability. This could include tablets without data and non-smart phones that only allow calls and texts.
  • Keep tech use visible in the home - Try to keep tech use in shared family spaces or used with bedroom doors open. This will allow you to support your child and be more aware of what they are doing online.
  • Follow age ratings – Apps, sites and games come with age ratings which are important to follow. You can find out the age rating on the website for the platform or by visiting Common Sense Media’s reviews.
  • Use safety settings – Explore the in-app and device safety settings with your child and check them regularly to make sure they are still in place.
  • Revisit parental controls – as children grow up and need the internet more for schoolwork you may want to adjust your parental controls. Keep checking these regularly to make sure they are in place.
  • Have regular safety conversations – at this age online safety conversations should be happening regularly. Visit our advice on talking to your child about online safety.
  • Build healthy habits - acknowledge the positives it brings as part of your safety conversations and agree rules and boundaries together as a family.

Carpark

Please do not walk across the car park- use the path. This is because while we are trying to reduce traffic, we cannot eliminate all moving vehicles at all times.

Parents are not permitted to use the carpark between 8.25 - 8.55am, 3.15 - 3.35pm and 4.20 - 4.40pm. As a rule of thumb, if there are children arriving and leaving, we don't want cars moving where possible. As agreed, blue badge holders may arrive outside of these times and wait for children to leave before moving their car. Alternatively, parents have identified priority parking on the main road.

Pot holes are particularly bad and we do not accept any responsibility for damage to your vehicles.

Food focus

Snacking

Findings by a School Trust Fund study found eating healthy school lunches improved pupils’ concentration.

By consuming nutritious meals and snacks, students can maintain steady energy levels, enhance their focus, and sustain attention during class, leading to improved academic engagement and performance.

A healthy morning snack can help children power through to lunch. We provide fruit/ veg for KS1 but usually have plenty to share with KS2.

Swap biscuits, sweets and chocolate muffins for healthier snacks like fruit and chopped veggies, plain rice cakes, toast with lower-fat spread or a fruited teacake.

If you are intending to send in healthy snacks with your child please limit them to foods like the list below:

  • Vegetables/ vegetable sticks – such as celery, cucumber, peppers or carrot.
  • A piece of cheese
  • A piece of fresh or dried fruit – pineapple, mango, kiwi, plain raisins, apricots, blueberries, banana slices.
  • Bread sticks, plain pretzels, banana bread, malt loaf, oat/rice cakes and small pitta breads can also be good snacks.
  • Yoghurt
We are aiming for a common-sense approach, with the key being to keep it healthy and no chocolate, sweets or crisps during breaktime.
