MVC GOLF MARCH 8, 2024

This week's Missouri Valley Conference golfers of the week include Hampus Wijkstrom and Johanna Wollenhaupt, both from Missouri State.

Teams and student-athletes that are currently playing in events will be part of next week's reporting period.

The Missouri State women's golf team placed fourth Tuesday (Mar. 5) at the UTRGV Vaqueros Invitational at McAllen Country Club. The Bears posted a final-round 290 to finish with an 873 total for 54 holes in their second tournament of the spring season. The individual highlight of the tournament for MSU was the performance of senior Johanna Wollenhaupt, who tied for fifth with a career-best 213 total, even-par, on rounds of 73-69-71. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi claimed the team title, outdistancing runner-up Abilene Christian, 853-862, while Bowling Green placed third (868), followed by the Bears and Lamar (875) rounding out the top five in the 11-team tournament.

The Belmont women's golf team finished in a tie for seventh place at the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate held this week at the RTJ Trail at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Ala. In Wednesday's final round, the Bruins posted a team score of 307 to move up a spot to a tie for seventh with host Samford at 918. Lipscomb won the team title at 878, while Troy was second at 906. Two Belmont golfers finished among the top-25. Senior Delia Gibbs posted a final round 74 to finish in a tie for seventh place at 224. She was 11 shots back of the individual medalist, Lauren Thompson of Lipscomb (212). It was Gibbs' fourth top-10 finish of the season. Southern Illinois tied for 12th in the 16-team field. As a team, the Salukis finished with a score of 963 (+99). Janie Samattiyadeekul was the Salukis' top performer finishing with a total score of 233 (+17). She tied for 34th out of 83 golfers, and finished day three strong with a score of 75 (+3), her best round of the tournament.

The Drake women's golf team turned in its lowest scores of the year at the Vaqueros Invitational at McAllen Country Club on March 4-5. The Bulldogs (294-301-294-889) placed seventh out of eleven teams while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (285-280-288-853) won the team trophy. Amber Henson (73-73-74-220) led the Bulldogs with a consistent three rounds and placed 18th overall.

The Missouri State men's golf team mounted a furious final-round rally Tuesday (Mar. 5), but came up a stroke short to tie for second at the Colin Montgomerie-HCU Invitational at Sweetwater Country Club. The Bears posted the second-best round of the day, a seven-under-par 281, and moved up four spots to find themselves in the middle of a thrilling finish which saw three teams finish within a shot of each other. First-day leader New Mexico Junior College held on for the win with a 54-hole total of 847, one better than the Bears and Weber State and 848, 16-under-par. Three-time all-conference standout Max Kreikemeier led the charge for MSU, firing a final-round 67 to finish tied for 13th with 212 for the tournament. Senior Hampus Wijkstrom posted the best overall finish for the Bears, placing 12th by carding 67-71-73--211.

The 2024 MVC Men's Golf Championship will be at The Club at Porto Cima (April 21-23) in Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Missouri State is the host institution. The Championship Tees for the men's course will play at 7,060 yards.

The 2024 MVC Women's Golf Championship will be at the par-72, 6,176-yard layout at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill. UNI is the host school. Teams will play 18 holes each (April 14-16).
