TERM 4 WEEK 2 - MONDAY 16 OCTOBER 2023
SUPPORT UNIT
Bee's for Banora T5 Market stall
On Thursday 7 September our students attended a T5 market at Tweed River. We sold a range of tie dyed products we have designed and produced using natural dyes from onions, avocado seeds and turmeric. Products included scrunchies, bags, scarves and bookmarks. Our tie dyed silk fabrics proved to be very popular, especially the scrunchies.
Students also sold our range of Bees for Banora products including lip balm, magnesium rub and dog paw balm, all made from locally sourced beeswax.
We are so proud of how our students represented our school and their expanding knowledge about our products and business enterprise.
Garden Produce
Students continue to build on their work ready skills in the garden. Growing, harvesting and selling our fresh organic produce to staff has provided an opportunity for authentic learning experiences and skill development. Selling our organic produce to staff continues to support our program and supports student learning. Thank you to those in our wonderful school community who have and continue to support this initiative.
The Garden has also featured in a range of other learning programs in the Support Unit in term 3 such as cooking, projects, art and mathematics. We welcome the warm change in weather and the excitement that spring brings in this environment.

NEW STUDENT MOBILE PHONE MANAGEMENT PLAN
You may have heard about the changes regarding mobile phone use in NSW high schools beginning in Term 4, 2023.
Banora Point High School acknowledges the educational value of technology in supporting and enhancing educational outcomes and student wellbeing. We also recognise mobile phones may cause harm if used inappropriately. We are committed to supporting our students to use them in safe, responsible and respectful ways to enhance student learning and engagement.
After careful consideration with our key stakeholders including the Student Representative Council (SRC), P&C, staff and executive teams, we have decided to proceed by using the strategy of keeping mobiles phones off and away, to reduce the distractions to students in the classroom.
Important changes in term 4
The mobile phone ban will apply during all school hours, including break times such as during lunch and recess, as well as while students are on school-organised excursions. Students will still be able to carry their phones while travelling to and from school. Individual student requests for exemption will be managed by the Principal and assessed by the school, for medical and learning needs.
The new strategy is being implemented to increase focus in classrooms, remove distractions and also promote positive social interaction, while reducing the potential for online bullying.
We look forward to working with you and the students, to make sure everyone is aware of the changes, and will continue to provide information updates directly to you via students, on our school website and through our social media channels. We are excited to make our school a mobile phone-free space to improve learning and engagement, however, we will always make sure you can contact your child in an emergency.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school directly on 07 5513 1960

Save water to delay restrictions
Following the El Nino declaration by the Bureau of Meteorology and less than average rainfall now forecast for the Northern Rivers, Tweed Shire Council is urging everyone in the Tweed to save water to prolong the shire’s water supply.
Without significant rain, the Tweed is heading into water restrictions. Council is asking everyone who lives, works and plays in the Tweed to unite and save water now.
Level 1 water restrictions for most of the Tweed will be triggered when the Clarrie Hall Dam level drops to 85% full. If each of us is using less than 160 litres of water a day when water restrictions are introduced, we delay the need to impose harsh restrictions during extended dry periods.
Some great water-saving tips for families include cleaning hard outdoor surfaces with a broom not a hose, mulching your garden, keeping your showers to 4 minutes, doing full loads of washing and fixing your water leaks indoors and out.
In 2020, Council banned water carting from Tyalgum and Uki. Whenever water restrictions are triggered, Council bans water carting from elsewhere in the Tweed to other local government areas.
Council is currently completing planning works for the proposed raising of Clarrie Hall Dam to increase the volume of water that can be stored, securing our water supply in the face of climate change and population growth.
