Student Spotlight: Olivia Valbak
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I grew up in Ashburn, Virginia in a family of four. My mom, Sarah, is from Michigan, and my dad, Dan, is from Denmark, so we did a lot of traveling growing up! I have a younger brother, Chandler, who plays baseball at Bridgewater College. We have always been close and grew up playing lots of different sports together. I started playing softball when I was five years old because my neighbor had signed up and asked me to join. My dad is a tennis pro, so he had never thrown a ball before, so we began learning together! I loved everything about the sport, and I never stopped playing since signing up that day.
Why did you choose to attend UAB?
I chose to attend UAB because of its strong academics, research opportunities, and competitive athletics. Prior to starting my freshman year, I knew that I wanted to take the pre-med track, and UAB is the perfect place to accomplish that! I am a cancer biology major, and UAB is currently the only university in the United States to offer a cancer biology degree!
What is your favorite part about being a student-athlete?
A few of my favorite parts about being a student-athlete have been the relationships I have made on and off the field, as well as the rigorous schedule we are subjected to. There is nothing better than waking up early in the morning to get a tough lift in with some of my best friends. I am so grateful that I have made relationships that will last a lifetime.
What excites you the most about this season?
I am so excited that we will be joining the American Athletic Conference this season! I cannot wait to step on the field this spring and play the new competition. I am also really looking forward to taking the field with this group of girls and our coaching staff. The feeling of this team is so special, and I am anticipating a successful season!

205 Day
Join UAB Football for its annual 205 Day event on National Signing Day Wednesday, February 7 at Iron City! This year’s 205 Day will focus on the UAB Football mission to Serve. Grow. Launch. By giving back to the 205, growing the 2024 signee class, and launching into the 2024 season!
Fans can mingle with the coaching staff from 5:30-6:15 p.m. Once the program begins, UAB Head Football Coach Trent Dilfer and his staff will preview the 2024 season as well as introduce this year's signing class.
Doors to Iron City will open at 5:30 p.m. and the event starts at 6:15 p.m. Tickets to the event are $10 and can be purchased here. Admission includes hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages, while a cash bar is also available.
Baseball Returns
UAB Baseball is set to start the 2024 season with a home series against Kennesaw State at Young Memorial Field from February 16th-18th. Following the matchup with Kennesaw State, the Blazers hit the road to take on Auburn on February 20th.
Following the trip to Auburn, UAB will host Southeastern Louisiana at Young Memorial Field for a series from February 23rd-25th. The Blazers will then host The University of Alabama at Regions Field on February 27th, in the first game of the home-and-home series.
There are plenty of exciting matchups coming to Birmingham this season! Be sure to utilize your Gold Card so you don't miss any of the action!

Is there a sport that holds a special place in your heart? You can make a lasting impact on the sport of your choice by making a gift to their sport gift account. Donations made contribute to the enhancement of the program's operating budget.
By giving to a Sport Gift Account, members are not eligible for benefits such as priority seating or parking. However, sport specific donors are eligible for non-tangible benefits outlined by the sport in which their contributions are made.

Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution's students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., international students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.
