THE URBAN FILTER DESIGNED BY JOHN WILSON AND TYLER FROST

DESIGN PROPOSAL

Urban filter aims to blend ecology and industry, connecting Atlanta to its history as both a railroad city but also its title as a "City in the Forest."

The Proctor Creek Greenway loop showcases the connection between industry and creek systems, with areas of blockage transforming into areas of community; providing that industries' effect on ecology can not only be mitigated but can used to improve upon a purely nature system.

INFRASTRUCTURE CONNECTION

Our preliminary research led us originally in what was assumed to be contradictory paths but in this research, we discovered that this juxtaposition in elevation and movement systems contribute to each other in fairly simple ways.

Rail lines, to minimize the chance of flooring, are placed on natural and constructed high ground that cuts through the urban fabric and natural watershed systems. Creeks naturally occur at the lowest points where water can flow downhill until they reach a larger river system. In Atlanta, a city that was founded by rail has major rail lines that alter these natural creek systems forcing runoff (pollution)into these creeks rendering them uninhabitable.

Our starting goal was to zoom in on the most affected creek system and see what we can do to not only revitalize the creek but also capitalize and improve on the existing distribution systems.
