Whitkirk News! 02nd May 2025

A message from Miss Quarmby

Hello everyone! I hope you're all doing well and enjoying the sunshine. Many of you have been asking about Beryl, our lovely school crossing patrol. Sadly, she was recently involved in an accident and is currently at home recovering. We’re keeping in touch with her and have sent our love and best wishes on behalf of the whole school community. We’re all hoping to see her back with us very soon.

Yesterday, Mr. Sadler and a group of Year 4 children represented our school at a football tournament at Bodington Playing Fields. A huge thank you to Lucas and Hektor’s dads, who stepped in to help coach the team in Mr. Stout’s absence. We’re incredibly proud to share that the Whitkirk team came second—well done to everyone involved!

Today, we’ve been busy interviewing for our new nursery teacher, and we’re very excited about the future—watch this space for more news soon!

This week, it’s been Year 4’s turn to visit Temple Newsam House as part of our exciting art project. Each KS2 class will have the chance to take part before the end of term, and we’re looking forward to celebrating the children’s fantastic learning with a special showcase on the afternoon of 30th June. Parents are invited to join us at Temple Newsam for this event—we can’t wait to see you there!

VE DAY MENU

Attendance

This week, our overall attendance was 96.07%! This isn't quite at our school attendance target: let's see if we can get back up to 96.5% next week. A huge well done to 4AS for achieving the highest attendance this week!

Let's take a look AT WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON THIS WEEK

EYFS

This week, Reception had a brilliant time at Forest School creating minibeast habitats! The children impressed us with their creativity, using natural resources to build wonderful homes for their chosen creatures. It was fantastic to see everyone so engaged and working together—well done, Reception! We love our forest school sessions at Whitkirk and can't wait for more exploration of our forest area in the spring sunshine!

Key Stage 1

This week, our Year 1 students have been exploring extreme climates through creative dioramas, crafting detailed scenes of the desert and the Arctic for a polar bear and elephant. In their computing unit, they practised taking photos of storybook pages and adding them to presentations, working towards creating their own videos. It's been a week of imaginative projects and developing digital skills!

This week in Year 2, we have been learning all about Yorkshire and writing our own non-chronological reports. The children enjoyed finding out about famous places like the Dales and the coast. In science, we have been discussing what a baby needs to grow, including food, sleep, love, and care.

Lower Key Stage 2

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 3! In English, we have been using expanded noun phrases and inverted commas and in Maths, we have been measuring in grams in kilograms. In RE, we have been learning about the Jewish creation story and created our own 'Creation Story Wheels'.

This week in Year 4, the children went on an exciting art trip to Temple Newsam. They loved exploring the artwork and took part in some fantastic creative activities. Their behaviour was excellent, and they represented the school brilliantly.

Upper Key Stage 2

Year 5 have been fantastic Mathematicians this week. We have been practising measuring a variety of angles using a protractor, whilst also discussing how we can prove that this angle is the correct size based on our knowledge of angle types. We have been super impressed with Year 5’s positivity and teamwork skills this week as we’ve conquered the skill of using a protractor! Well done Year 5!

This week, Year 6 have gone angles crazy! The children have immersed themselves in the world of angles—exploring angles on a straight line, within triangles, quadrilaterals, and even regular polygons. They've worked strategically to find missing angles and explain their reasoning clearly. We are so proud of their focus, determination, and growing confidence in tackling this tricky topic. Well done, Year 6!
