Farewell from Miss King

As you all now know, I will be leaving Wold at the end of the academic year.

For the past 7 years, it has been my absolute privilege to lead and be part of this wonderful school community. Together, we have seen our children grow, thrive, and achieve incredible milestones.

I truly believe that Wold Academy is a nurturing and inspiring environment for pupils to learn, and it is testament to the partnership between home and school, and the hard work and dedication of our wonderful staff, that we have been able to continue to improve the learning opportunities for our pupils.

I will miss the pupils, parents and staff who make up this amazing school , and I would like to thank you all for your support during my 7 years as Principal at Wold. I will cherish the memories and experiences we have shared.

Miss King

Staff changes

There are some other staff changes at the end of the Summer Term.

  • Mr Haymes leaves Wold - we wish him all the very best and thank him for his contribution to the school.
  • Mrs Marrett is moving on - thank you for being such a big part of the Wold community and good luck for the future.
  • Mrs Williams is leaving Wold - after many years as a Teaching Assistant and then our School Counsellor, we will miss you. You really have made a difference to the lives of so many of our families - good luck!
  • School Nurse Jackie is retiring. We have loved having her with us each week, and hope she enjoys some quieter days.
  • Mrs Underwood will be going on maternity leave at the end of this term - we look forward to hearing about the safe arrival of your baby, and to seeing you return to Wold next year.

Miss King and Mrs Everingham are in the process of interviewing some fabulous candidates to join our wonderful teaching team, and we will let you know as soon as possible who your child's teacher will be next year.

F1 and Beehive

What a lovely half term we have had. The children have been exploring natural and manmade materials in our materials topic. They have been involved in a floating and sinking experiment where they had to find the best material to make a boat from. The children made predictions on which material would be the best and were quite surprised by the results. We have been into the forest and made paint brushes from leaves and twigs, comparing the marks between these and manmade brushes. They loved the glass walk when we went around the school looking for things that were made of glass and were very engaged when we watched a video about how glass is made from sand!

In maths they loved '10 green bottles' and are coming along well using their fingers to show how many bottles there were. In T4W we have loved the 'Rainbow Princess' and have looked at frogs and where they live, rainbows and the correct colours.

In the Beehive the children have been learning the text ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. They have been using the story to talk about size, building bridges for the goats to go over and discussing prepositions such as over and on top. They have created some lovely collage and have tried really hard to say new words related to the book. Well done!

We are ready to enjoy the last few weeks where we have out visit from the Purple Pig Farm and our end of year graduation. Thank you for all your continued support.

F2

Wow! It’s been a busy month.

We have started our new Talk For Writing story ‘The Magic Porridge Pot.’ We’ve enjoyed innovating the porridge to hot chocolate.

We’ve also begun ‘Drawing Club’, a scheme of work inspired by the children’s author Greg Botterill. This involves focussing on a story each week and writing creative passwords and passcodes to make magical things happen to the characters and settings in the story. It is one of our favourite parts of the day.

In maths we have been learning about time. You may have heard your child singing "Tick tock tick tock see my clock...". We've enjoyed singing the structure of our day to this song. We've also been exploring money and had lots of shops in continuous provision and our maths lessons.

During CKC we have explored work by Kandinsky and created Fathers' Day cards inspired by his artwork. We have researched hot and cold places on earth in Geography and enjoyed writing animal fact files. In Science we have looked at different materials and their properties. We held a floating and sinking experiment and enjoyed drawing around our shadows.

A huge thank you to all the grown-ups that came to support us on sports day. We are very proud of everybody for taking part and trying their best.

We're looking forward to more Drawing Club sessions, as well as our picnic on the field with the farm 😊

Year 1

What an exciting and busy few weeks we have had in Year 1! It was lovely to see so many of you at Sports Day. The children really enjoyed the races and showed great resilience. We are very proud of all of them!

In Talk for Writing, we have been looking at a persuasive text about a Giant's castle. The children are going on to create their own fantasy castle and design their own leaflet about it. The children have been very interested in learning facts about London in geography, and what it is like to live there.

Computing this term has been exploring programming using the Scratch programme. The children are enjoying creating their own algorithms to design their own games. Please see photos below.

The children had a fantastic time during our DT workshop provided by Scrapstore. As part of the day we explored materials and techniques, planned our designs and created our final products.

In maths, we will be going onto learning about time looking at 'o'clock' and 'half past' and in science, we are continuing to look at different habitats.

Year 2

Y2 have been very excited this month as we have prepared our musical extravaganza 'Little Red Riding Hood'! We have loved learning the songs during our music lessons and we loved performing them for you even more. I am sure that you will agree we did fantastically and all the staff are very proud of us - we're sure you are too. We also raised over £70 for the PTFA which is amazing so thank you once again.

Alongside, our amazing play we have also been looking at recounts in T4W. We looked at a police report for our model text where one poor lady had been knocked over by a tiger! For our amber write we imagined that a dragon had appeared in the school grounds and we wrote a police report for what had happened with the dragon.

In science we have been looking at materials and we have all found this topic really interesting and learned a lot. Our history and geography topics have both been about Egypt - looking at Ancient Egypt in history and looking at the River Nile and how important it is for farming in Geography.

We have also had our sports day and we would like to thank all our parents, friends and family for coming to support us. We had a great day and showed real sportsmanship in all races, persevering even if things were tricky. We were very pleased that it was nicer weather and the rain held off without being too warm!

Finally, we are looking forward to our trip to Normanby Hall and we would like to ask you to keep your fingers crossed for dry weather for that!

Year 3

Hello! Our final few weeks of Year 3 have kept everyone busy, with lots of things happening both in and out of school.

Sports Day allowed many children to demonstrate some excellent sportsmanship and teamwork skills, as well as sporting prowess. Congratulations to all who took part and thank you to everyone came along to support the event. Finishing the morning off with ice pops certainly proved to be popular!

Another activity which Year 3 enjoyed was our trip to ‘The Big Malarkey’. The excitement on the coach as we travelled to East Park was palpable and the day did not disappoint! We met Sue Hendra, the author of, ‘Supertato’, who helped us create our own ‘super veg’ characters. Illustrator Neill Cameron explained to us how he came up with his ideas and we designed our own comic book characters. Finally, we acted in the 'Big Drama' story telling event with hilarious results! Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible.

In T4W, we have been inventing machines and using persuasive language to convince people that our design is just what they need!

In T4R, we have completed our text, 'Why the Whales Came', and are now focussing on a poetry text called, ‘Sea Fever’. The poem is filled with unusual vocabulary, similes, and personification. We are using our skills to identify the different language features in the poem and consider which help to create images in our minds as we read it.

In RE, we continue to look at our focus religion, Buddhism, and compare ‘remembrance’ events which take place throughout the year. We have also investigated the concept of the ‘body’ and ‘soul’ in Christianity and other religions.

Our science topic at the moment is ‘The Water Cycle’. We have identified solids, liquids and gases and observed water in different states. Many children were fascinated to hear that the water we use now is the same water that the dinosaurs drank!

In maths, we have covered a range of skills, including division, money and problem solving. The children continue to impress us with their increasing speed when recalling multiplication facts on TT Rockstars – let’s continue to turn those ‘heat maps’ as green as possible!

In DT, we made healthy snacks by using knives and graters safely to chop and prepare our ingredients independently. In history, we have explored famous ancient Greek people who have had an impact on us, such as Homer, Aristotle and Alexander the Great, and in music we have been enjoying learning playground songs and then composing our own.

We would like to thank all parents and carers for their support throughout year 3 and would like to take this opportunity to wish the children every success as they begin the transition to year 4.

Year 4

Year 4 have had a great time during this summer term!

We have taken part in sports day, earning lots of points for our house teams and shown great resilience and team work here. We also represented Wold outstandingly on our recent school trip to The Big Malarkey at East Park.

We have worked very hard delving into and picking apart, persuasive texts and creating our own in Talk for Writing. The children have thoroughly enjoyed reading into the depths of 'The Explorer' in our Talk for Reading lessons and are desperate to find out the ending.

We have explored classification in science, where the children have become detectives, looking into various animals, their habitats and any common features they may have. We have eve discovered some rare animals living in the Amazon Rainforest.

We are looking forward to our transition day and end of term activities, as well as creating a gift box in our Design and Technology unit. We are so proud of how far the children have come this year and cannot wait to hear of their next achievements in Year 5.

Year 5

Year 5 have enjoyed working on 'Beowulf' in both Talk 4 Reading and Talk 4 Writing lessons. In history, the children have finished their unit on The Vikings; they have learnt what a Viking house looked like and what jobs the Viking men did. In RE, we have been learning about pilgrimages that Hindus, Christians and Pages would take. We have also spent some time researching Stonehenge.

In DT, we are looking forward to making our own book marks using cross stitch and in computing we are going to be using software to create digital images.

On Wednesday 26th June Year 5 went to visit Sirius. The children took part in music, maths, PE, Languages, History and Geography lessons link to the upcoming Olympics in Paris. The children especially liked the PE session focusing on street basketball and also enjoyed experiencing life in a secondary school. They learnt it is a lot bigger then Wold Academy and its has a lot of steps.

Book Awards

Last week Mrs Underwood and Mrs James took a group of Year 5 children to 'The James Reckitt Book Awards' at East Park. They were both so proud of how well the children represented Wold and of their efforts and behaviour throughout the day. It was a warm day, but the children engaged fantastically and had a great time meeting authors and illustrators. We were very excited as our favourite author Simon James Green won the award. Well done to all of the children for reading the required books in just a few short months.

Year 6

As the end of term is almost upon us, Year 6 have been very busy preparing for their final weeks at Wold Academy. One of our favourite projects has been the rehearsals for our show entitled, “I'm an 11-Year-Old, Get Me Outta Here!” With true team spirit, the children have embraced this project taking their roles very seriously, which include crew members, actors, singers, props team and technical support.

For some children, standing on the stage and saying one line of script seemed daunting, however, with the support and encouragement of their peers, many children have tried to overcome these fears and we are very proud. We are looking forward to performing this on Thursday 4th July!

Having practised with our coaches for a number of weeks, our Year 6 children thoroughly enjoyed their final sports day. Wold Academy takes sportsmanship seriously and our sports day was a wonderful opportunity for children to show how they embrace sport, no matter what their ability.

Keeping active, the Year 6 children are very excited for the residential - which is always a great success! I am sure the children will have lots to report following their experience. Photos will be shared during our Year 6 leavers' assembly.

Many of our children will be spending time visiting their new secondary schools during the week commencing 8th July - we wish them well and look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return.

We are also looking forward to our end of term disco - Thursday 18th July, 5pm arrival - and our final assembly on the last day - Friday 19th July, at 2pm. We believe that these last few weeks at school are precious and we intend to make them as enjoyable and memorable as possible before the summer break welcomes us all.
