What role does the library play in retention?

The library supports retention by understanding and responding to student needs. It can be as simple as providing a quiet, safe space to study or to gather in groups and share ideas. For library staff our main goal is teaching students critical thinking skills and helping them grasp concepts through one-on-one interactions and in-class instruction sessions.

Outside the library's walls, the library participates in IVYT Student Success Bootcamp, New Student Orientation. Welcome Fest, and other campus events. Our presence at these events promotes the library as a 'haven' on campus. We encourage life-long learning skills and enhance the academic experience and promote a sense of belonging though programming, all leading to retention of students.

Faculty who engage with the library through instruction, assigning research projects requiring use of library resources, or campus collection development, are more likely to recommend other student supports which positively influence retention.

One-on-One Research Help

Did you know the library offers one-on-one research help? Students (including faculty and staff working on dissertations, articles, or advanced degrees) can set up a meeting with a librarian to discuss your research assignments or presentations and get help finding relevant resources and using library databases. We can meet in person or by phone, email, or zoom.

If any student comes to you feeling overhwhelmed by research assignments or presentations, please direct them to the library for some individualized help.

Faculty Surveys

The Library Services Department is running a statewide survey for Faculty this fall. This short survey will assist Ivy Tech Libraries in assessing the effectiveness of their services and resources. Your responses will remain anonymous, so please feel free to provide candid feedback. We appreciate your valuable input!
