Boarders Trip to Clip n Climb

The boarders enjoyed a great trip to Clip n Climb at the weekend. They attacked a variety of climbing challenges with courage and showed great resilience to keep improving their speed and routes through to the top of each course! Great exercise for the mind and body.

The rest of the weekend was spent making tasty waffles for Sunday brunch and checking on the progress of our Kent College woodland bluebells to see if they have made an appearance yet!

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

This week Kent College received a lovely letter from the Samaritans thanking two of our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award participants, Sophie C and Livvy C in Year 9, for their help and support as part of their volunteering exercise.

The letter reads:

"Between January and March 2025, Sophie and Livvy braved six supermarket collections, giving up over 12 hours of their time to raise an incredible £454 for Samaritans as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.
Their fundraising has the power to answer 45 potentially life-saving calls. Every penny they raised will help Samaritans be there, round the clock, every single day of the year for anyone who needs us.
We can’t thank them enough for their help, and for all they’ve done to help raise awareness of the importance of mental health."

Well done to Livvy and Sophie!

Year 10 visit Reception Class

Our Year 10 GCSE Textiles students had an exciting visit to Reception class in the Prep School on Monday, sharing their amazing ‘Space’ inspired poncho costume designs! The little ones were thrilled to see the creative ideas and even helped draw stars and rockets that can be incorporated into the designs. We can’t wait to see these stellar costumes on stage during Space, our musical production, on 1st May.

Year 9 MFL Prize for Young Translators

This term Year 9 MFL students have been taking part in the annual Anthea Bell Young Translators Competition, organised by Queen's College Oxford. This is a UK-wide school competition where students use their language skills to translate an original piece of writing in either French, Spanish or German into English during their lessons. The results will be announced next term. Best of luck to all our young translators!

Student Voice

This week's Student Voice meetings were productive and many things were discussed. The groups involved were Food, Uniform and Charity and we look forward to communicating the outcomes in due course.

Soroptimist Club

The final meeting of the Spring Term for the Soroptimist Club was dedicated to preparing posters for our upcoming Doughnut Fundraiser, which will support a charity providing prosthetic limbs for amputees in India. We are excited to host this event at the start of the Summer term, further details will be shared soon.

Textiles Round Up

Year 7

This week the Year 7's have been busy finishing up their beautiful owl cushions. As part of our sustainable fashion initiative, the students have to stuff part of their owls with recycled fabric and wadding. They're keen to take them home for Easter and for Mother's Day. Well done to those finished!

Year 9

Year 9 have been tasked to enter into the Young Fashion Designer Award this year. The students have recently moved on from their Research pages onto their Development pages, exploring techniques for making their own sustainable fabrics using the processes they've learnt in class such as weaving, heat pressing, embroidery. A few of the students have been focusing on specific materials such as leather, and milk cotton, thinking about how they are created and can be used for their designs.

Year 10

Tasked with another creative theatre project, the students are currently designing space-themed hooded ponchos for the upcoming musical production of Space. On Monday the students visited the Prep School to gain some inspiration and have a design session with Reception pupils. As part of a key skills for GCSE and A-Level Textiles, the students were then taught how to make a pattern on the ponchos. Mrs Smith kindly created a sample poncho for the students to study, as it can be challenging to envision how a 2D pattern becomes a 3D design!
