How to Put Together a Gift Bundle for your Friend
Olive Martinson
Are you wondering what to get your friend for the holidays? Easy-peasy! Just follow the guide below to make the perfect gift bundle.
First of all, you need to think about your friend and their personality. What’s their favorite color? Do they like to craft or cook? These points will help you figure out the peak of their interests.
A nice way to start your gift bundle is with something comfy and cozy. Think of something like a blanket, plushie, or a hat. There will be lots of different options on these items, so you’ll need to think of their favorite animal, color, or pattern. Another thing to take into consideration is what they like to do. If they like to go outside and stay warm, think of hats or gloves.
Next up in your bundle: Candy and treats!
This is a fun part, but keep in mind that your friend’s tastes may be different than yours. You also need to check in if they have any allergies that could prevent them from enjoying their treat. You can always just go to Fred Meyer’s and get something, but there is a more personal route. Baking something such as cookies or muffins is sweet (no pun intended) and fun.
Finally, the gift from the heart.
This is THE MOST important part of your bundle! The gift from the heart is a personal, sincere gift. It is handmade by you, to your friend using their interests. For example: you could knit a blanket if you know they like to be warm and comfortable. Set up a surprise trip somewhere, or tickets to a show if they like to explore new experiences.
Keep in mind that taking out or adding in items in your gift bundle is fine! You know your friend best.

Brooklynn DeBritz
Participating in MMS Sports means being part of an exemplary team that not only excels in athletic performance but also shows academic success. The Winter 1 sports season is no different. The Boy’s Basketball teams have started on an amazing note, and everybody participating has been working incredibly hard and putting in lots of effort.
The Boys' basketball teams have come a long way, improving every game and putting their best foot forward. There are four teams: a 7th-grade A team and B team and an 8th-grade A and B team. Way to go Bulldogs!
Rivers Harwood, 7th grader, shared his thoughts on the season so far- “I think the season is going well so far…I like basketball because I get to play with my friends and I especially love the close exciting games where we all come together to get a win… That first win boosted our teams' confidence. All though our team does need to stop messing around as much and I believe that our team will be hard to stop.”
Skyler Cross, 7th grader, shared his thoughts on the season so far and what he likes about basketball- “What I like about basketball is that all of my friends are on the team and it helps keep me in shape, I think it is overall a good sport. I think the team is doing good but we just need to use our plays in a game.”
Tru Teasley, 7th grader, shared what he likes about basketball: “The season is going great so far…What I like about basketball is the intense and fun gameplay and the good sportsmanship.”
Chase Corollo, 7th grader, said: “Our season is going very well we are learning our plays and becoming a team…Our team is doing very well we are all playing together and working with our coaches to become better each day.”

Fun Facts About MMS
Evelyn Self
In this article, we explore Morgan's history, current events, and plans. Although this article is mostly intended for 6th graders or new students, it can also be fun to read if you are not new; you never know what you might learn.
Did you know...
- the color of the power tickets changes every year? They rotate school colors yearly (Red, Blue, and Grey). Staff say this is because they don't want kids to hoard power tickets from previous years to buy things from the store. It would be unfair to other students.
- the school mascot used to be a tiger. The school changed this because kids complained that they couldn't use Morgan clothes a lot when they went to high school, we also wanted our school mascot to match other Ellensburg schools just like other towns do.
- in 1947, Morgan won an award for a traffic safety contest.
Thanks for reading.
Upcoming Winter Holidays
Emily Malella
With Christmas coming up just around the corner, that also means tons of other festive holidays and traditions are too. If you’re curious about what other cultures and religions celebrate over the winter seasons, this article will explain a couple popular holidays you might find interesting.
HANUKKAH
Hanukkah (also known as ‘The Festival of Lights’), is believed to be one of the most beloved holidays in all of Judaism. The holiday is about celebrating the miracle of the single jar of oil lasting for eight days in the survival of Judaism.
Hanukkah lasts for eight days each year, and this year it will be celebrated from sundown of December 25, 2024, to sundown of January 2, 2025.
Each night, one candle is inserted into the menorah, (a candelabrum used in Jewish worship), going from right to left, starting with the center candle, (the shamash), and one other candle on the far right. When the shamash is lit on the first night, that is the time to recite the Hanukkah blessing while the shamash is the only candle on the menorah. The second night you only insert one candle, right next to the one you put before. This process continues until the final night when all of the candles are lit one final time. The lighting is slightly different from the inserting of candles, and is done from left to right each night. Most families wait until sundown to light the menorah, but others wait until the entire family is home, no matter what time. The menorah is a symbol of appreciation of Judaism, so it’s primarily placed on the inside of the window, on the dinner table, or sometimes outside of the door.
KWANZAA
Kwanzaa is a six day celebration from December 25, 2024, to January 1, 2025. It was introduced in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga after the black power movement, and is celebrated to acknowledge the racial struggles the African Americans faced. The holiday is about representing and appreciating African heritage, and African American culture.
Kwanzaa is welcome to all people of different ethnicities and races, and includes all families to come and honor the ancestors and eat the feast provided.
Some aspects of Kwanzaa are reciting original poetry, African drumming, and original Black writing. You’ll also notice some of the Pan-African flag’s colors such as red (the struggle) black (the people) and green (the future). These colors are spread around and worn on the traditional clothing worn by participants.
Each day they light a candle to announce and celebrate the principle of the day, and bring light to that principle by doing various activities to support it.
LUNAR NEW YEAR
The Lunar New Year is still a bit further away from the other upcoming holidays, and will be celebrated on January 29, 2025.
Lunar New Year is an Asian holiday widely celebrated in China, and most of the surrounding countries, (Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc).
It begins with the first new moon on the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon 15 days later. It’s tradition for family members to receive some amounts of money in a red envelope (lai see), and a lantern festival is held to announce the final day of the New Year.
Traditional foods like yuanxiao, sticky rice balls that symbolize unity in family, fagao, a cake representing prosperity, and yusheng, raw fish and a vegetable salad are served around the table.
This year starting January 29, 2025 will be the year of the snake, symbolizing wisdom, charm and elegance. The year of the snake will end February 16, 2026 on the next Lunar New Year.

Staff Spotlight
Natalia Garcia
Welcome to the staff spotlight! I picked 5 amazing staff members. Get ready to learn some facts about them!!
Mr. Gleed
What makes a good day?
For me, a good day is when I am optimistic and around people I like.
What inspired you to want to teach?
I struggled with math growing up and wanted to teach subjects that people struggle with. I also love helping kids out!
What best/worst thing about being a teacher?
Best: Being able to conduct experiments with kids and have fun!
Worst: Getting “burnt out” at certain times of the year.
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
I used to teach math, and I love listening to rap music.
If you won the lottery and had to give up teaching, what would you do instead?
I would start a drive-in movie theater! I would love to start an outdoor venue to show some of the best older movies.
What subject would you never teach?
I would never teach history because I find it boring and I don't think I would be very good at it.
Mrs. Kellogg
What makes a good day?
People show kindness to each other.
What's the best/worst thing about being a teacher?
Best: Forming relationships with students.
Worst: Grading
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
I almost didn't graduate high school because I skipped too much during my senior year.
What subject will you never teach?
Science :)
If you won the lottery and had to give up teaching, what would you do instead?
Start a pet rescue and travel the world with my family.
What advice would you give the students at MMS?
You have the ability to change the world. Use it!!
Miss Rupple
What makes a good day?
A good day for me starts with waking up early and getting in a walk to enjoy the morning. I love settling in with a good book and eating some delicious food. Spending quality time with my family and friends on the west side also makes the day feel complete. My friends and I love going on “food marathons.” We’ll start at one restaurant and get an appetizer and then move to the next spot for the entree and finish somewhere else for dessert.
What inspired you to want to teach?
My path to teaching wasn't a straight line. When I started at CWU, I was exploring different paths ... without really finding my direction. During my last year, I was nannying, and one day, the kids and I got into a conversation about what they liked and disliked about school. It made me reflect on my own experiences... I always loved helping the teachers and being around students... I think deep down, I always wanted to be a teacher. That day, after talking to the kids, I went home and changed all my classes to education. Thankfully CWU has a fantastic program, and I was able to dive into something I realized I was passionate about.
What's the best/worst thing about being a teacher?
Best: The best part is definitely the students. I love walking through the hallways, greeting both current students and even those I don't have in class. Getting to know each student and what makes them unique is incredibly rewarding. It truly feels like my dream job!
Worst: The hardest part might be the lunch schedule! On Wednesdays, for example, lunch is at 10:30 am, so by the time I get home. I'm starving…
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
Something students might be surprised to learn about me is that I love to travel, and I've been fortunate to explore many different countries. One of my favorite experiences was a solo trip where I traveled by train from Barcelona to Paris. Getting to explore new places, experience different cultures, and meet new people has been incredible and it's something I think about a lot!
What subject would you never teach?
History…. No offense:)
If you won the lottery and had to give up teaching, what would you do instead?
If I won the lottery and had to give up teaching, I’d open an animal rescue sanctuary, especially for mini horses! I’d have a huge garden to grow my own food and probably end up with at least ten dogs roaming around.
What advice do you give the students as MMS?
My advice to students is to be yourself and stay true to who are you. Don’t waste time trying to blend in with everyone else. You’ll only find your true friends and supporters when you live authentically. Embracing who you are is what will set you apart and help you find people who genuinely belong in your life.
Mr. Flores
What makes a good day?
Smiles because when people are happy it's hard to be negative.
What inspired you to want to teach?
I had a teacher who cared, and who helped me feel valued. That’s something I want to provide my students with so that they know their worth.
What best/worst thing about being a teacher?
Best: every single day is a new day for laughter
Worst: coffee deficiency
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
My curly hair routine: I put water on my head, brush it then put pomade in it.
What subject will you never teach?
English.
If you won the lottery and had to give up teaching, what would you do instead?
If I won the lottery I would open up a soccer complex for free admission.
What advice would you give the students at MMS?
Have fun, don’t worry about it!
Mr. Humphrey
What makes a good day?
Every day is a good day because of the possibilities. The best days are full of tea with honey, woodworking, and music.
What inspired you to want to teach?
I am very passionate about woodworking, and I love seeing students get excited about making a cool project.
What's the best/worst thing about being a teacher?
Best: is the students.
Worst: all the grading and keeping organized.
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
Probably the most surprising thing would be that I lived in Kolkata, India, and studied Indian music. I still perform and teach Indian music actually every Wednesday!
What subject will you never teach?
Math.
If you won the lottery and had to give up teaching, what would you do instead?
Play LOTS of music, in Hawaii.
What advice would you give the students at MMS?
You are in charge of your own destiny! I am living by if you work hard you can learn any skill that you want.

Dear Rocky,
Hey, so I really don't like my teachers because they make fun of me. What should I do???
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
I’m sorry you’re feeling this way! It’s not okay for anybody to make fun of you, especially at school. If possible, consider reaching out to the teacher and talking to them about how their words made you feel, as they probably did not realize the impact. If things do not improve, take action by reaching out to a school counselor or trusted adult for support.
Dear Rocky,
My crush says hi to me every day, but I don't know if he likes me. My friend asked him if he liked me but he didn't give a clear answer. How do I know if he likes me?
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
When it comes to figuring out if someone likes you, it can be difficult to decipher the mixed messages they send about their feelings for you. Especially if they may be feeling unsure about their feelings, they may be hesitant to give a sure response. However, it sounds like their constant reaching out to you and them saying hi to you is a positive sign. They clearly like talking to you and are making an effort to engage with you. Keep looking for hints that they are interested in you, and maybe eventually you can see their true feelings shine through.
Dear Rocky,
I have a friend that has been really supportive of me since 5th grade, but I feel like middle school is tearing us apart. What can I do to keep us together?
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
It can be tricky when friendships feel strained, especially when during middle school when it can feel like things are changing quickly. Be sure to openly communicate with your friend about how you are feeling, and make time for each other, even though things may feel more busy. Staying honest, supportive, and understanding will help you navigate through this transition together.
Dear Rocky,
My parents say that my grades are fine, as long as I'm trying my hardest. The thing is, my schoolwork just piles on top of me. I feel like I'm drowning. I know I need to apply myself, but I just keep putting off my work and I can't seem to get myself together.
Please help me.
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
This sounds stressful! To manage your assignments effectively, think about when you can work on them and prioritize tasks by completing shorter ones first. Break larger projects into smaller parts, be sure to eliminate distractions, and take brief breaks as needed. Reward yourself for completing tasks to stay motivated. Good time management reduces stress and helps you stay on track. Good luck!
Dear Rocky,
I had an old friend from preschool to like 2nd grade but during Covid, he and I split up and we were pretty good friends last year but I messed up and now everything's awkward with him and we never talk I want to be better friends with him. Can you help me?
-Sincerely, Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
It sounds like you value this friendship and want to make things right, which is a good start. The first step would be to reach out honestly. Telling them that you miss the friendship and that you understand why things got awkward would help them know you want to make it up to them. Simply apologize for your part in your part in the fallout, and give them lots of time to process. Rebuilding friendships can take time, but reaching out and connecting with them will show that you are committed to making it right.
Dear rocky,
I like somebody but Idk if he likes me back how do I know if he does please help me figure out if I should tell him thanks
-From anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
It can be confusing if you feel unsure about feelings for others. One way you can watch to see if someone likes you is by paying attention to his behavior around you. Does he try to talk to you often? Does he smile, laugh a lot at your jokes, or find reasons to be near you? Sometimes when people like each other they might be nervous or shy around each other. If you're still feeling unsure, you can talk to them more and see if the connection grows. If you feel ready, you can let him know how you feel, and maybe even ask him about his feelings. Often it feels very flattering just knowing that someone out there likes you. Remember, even if they don’t feel the same way, you don’t need their approval to feel acceptance!

Buckeye Brownie Bites
Ashley Hill
Buckeye brownie bites are unlike any brownie you’ve had before! The mini brownie cups are topped with creamy peanut butter fudge balls and drizzled with chocolate. Try these for a cozy bite-sized treat!
What are Buckeyes?
Buckeyes are peanut butter fudge balls that are partially coated in chocolate. They’re soft, creamy, and similar to peanut butter balls which are completely covered in chocolate.
Ingredients
- 1 Brownie mix - prepare according to box instructions
- ¾ Cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 Cup powdered sugar
- 2 Tbsp butter - softened
- 1 Tsp vanilla extract
- 1 Cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Baking instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 and thoroughly grease a mini muffin tin. Set aside.
Make your brownie batter according to box instructions, then divide the batter evenly among the mini muffin tin (half full.)
Bake the brownies for 18-20 minutes, then let cool for 5 minutes. (I did have to do two batches.)
Using the handle of a wooden spoon or cooking spatula, press down to make an indent halfway deep in the center of each brownie bite. Set aside to cool fully.
In a medium mixing bowl combine creamy peanut butter, powdered sugar, softened butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until the mixture is smooth.
Roll the peanut butter mixture into 12 equal-sized balls (about ½ inch in size) then lightly press them into the brownie bite indentations.
Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave in 30-second intervals or until smooth. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the buckeye bites, then let the chocolate set before removing the buckeye bites from the pan.
Enjoy!

Super Bowl Odds
Trenton Kelly
If you know what football is then you've heard of the Super Bowl. If you don’t know what the Super Bowl is, then a football game that is played once a year and takes place between the 2 best teams in the league. (Normally) Sometimes there is an upset in the tournament to get to the Super Bowl and the best team loses, letting a different team make the Super Bowl. But off the odds, here are this year's (most likely) Super Bowl winners according to si.com.
Detroit Lions (+275)
If you’re wondering what the + means, it means if you bet on them to win the Super Bowl with 100 dollars the number after the + is how much you'd win. So as of when I am writing this (November 25th) the Detroit Lions stand at 10-1 and are number 1 in the NFC and the NFC North. They have only lost to the San Francisco 49ers. They have had a very dominant season with their offense being ranked number 3 offensively and number 13 defensively. (according to Fox sports)With all these stats it makes sense for them to be number 1 in Super Bowl odds.
The Kansas City Chiefs (+425)
The Kansas City Chiefs are also 10-1 and are number 1 in the AFC. They play in the AFC West division being number 1 in that division. They are ranked number 5 defensively and number 16 offensively putting them ahead of most teams in the league. The Chiefs went 9-0 through 9 weeks before losing to the Buffalo Bills in week 10, they then played the Carolina Panthers this week defeating them.
Buffalo Bills (+700)
The Bills are currently 9-2 and are the number 2 in the AFC. The Bills recently beat the Kansas City Chiefs which bumped the Bills up quite a bit. They had a bye week this week which means they didn't play a game this week. They have lost 2 games this year, one to the Houston Texans and one to the Baltimore Ravens. The Bills are ranked number 13 offensively which may sound bad but the bills have had many injuries this year but their players are now healthy and have been doing great. The Bills are also ranked number 16 defensively. The Bills are doing this good due to great quarterback play by Josh Allen.
Philadelphia Eagles (+650)
The Eagles stand at 9-2 and are number 2 in the NFC and first place in the NFC East. They are ranked number 1 in the league defensively, and number 5 offensively. These stats are great and one of the reasons they are projected this high to win the Super Bowl. They have a very well-rounded team with a great defense and offensive line. They have a consistent top-10 quarterback and a top-5 offensive line. (statistically according to Fox Sports)
The Baltimore Ravens (+800)
The Baltimore Ravens stand at 8-4 and are currently 2nd in the AFC North. And are ranked number 1 offensively in the NFL. This may sound like they should be higher on this list but their defense is holding them back, their defense is ranked 26th in the league. Their offense is good due to their quarterback Lamar Jackson. They may seem questionable due to being 2nd in their division but they have the same amount of wins as first in their division but they have a bye week so they are 2nd in their division.
The Division Leaders
In the NFL there are 8 different divisions. In each division, there are 4 teams, if you have the most wins in your division then you win it. Whoever wins their division gets a guaranteed playoff spot in their conference. There are 4 spots for division winners (the best team in the conference gets a pass to the 2nd round) and 3 spots for non-division winners. (called wild cards) if you lose the playoffs you're out, whoever wins their conference tournament goes to the Super Bowl with a chance to win.
Below I will name every division leader currently, their chance to win the division, and what seed they currently are in their conference playoff bracket. (Numbers by Fan Duel)
- NFC West: Seattle Seahawks (+200) 3rd seed
- NFC North: Detroit Lions (-475, the lower the number the higher the chance for it to happen) 1st seed
- NFC South: Atlanta Falcons (-225) 4th seed
- NFC East: Philadelphia Eagles (-4,000) 2nd seed
- AFC West: Kansas City Chiefs (-5,000) 1st seed
- AFC North: Pittsburgh Steelers (+125) 3rd seed
- AFC South: Houston Texans (-2,500) 4th seed
- AFC East: Buffalo Bills (-3,000) 2nd seed
Protein Pudding
Harper Bononcini
This is the best dish for people who love pudding, and it even has a lot of protein too! I love this dish because it's sweet but does not have a lot of sugar. I would recommend this dish anytime and it's especially good for when you are working out, trying to eat more protein, or just want a good, sweet, high protein treat!
Ingredients
- Chocolate Fudge Jell-o [I used the one with zero sugar]
- Chocolate Fairlife Core Power Protein Shake
- Whipped Cream [I also used zero sugar on this one too!]
- Strawberries [optional]
- Shaved chocolate [optional]
Preparation instructions
Get a good-sized bowl and pure the whole bottle of Protein Shake in the bowl.
Then add in the packet of Chocolate Jell-o.
Mix the Protein Shake and Jell-o until it is the consistency of Jell-o [I would prefer to use a whisk so it's not clumpy and it's very well mixed in.]
Then add the whipped cream on top and cut up the strawberries into bite-sized pieces to add on top! [I love strawberries so that's why I put them on but you could put shaved chocolate on top which is very good too!]
Put some on a dish and enjoy!

Girls Wrestling
Allison Alder
Morgan’s girls’ wrestling team is making a name for itself, displaying determination and skill this season. Everyone was excited to start the season, and I interviewed several athletes about how the season had been going. Here are their responses.
Alice Mills, 7th grade, shared her thoughts on the season so far- "My favorite part of the season so far is the meets. They are nerve-racking but so fun. I also like sports in general; it is so much fun!" Alice also shared her thoughts on the team: "I think the team is doing well this season!"
Chloie Biddle, 8th grade, also has shared her thoughts- "My favorite part of the season is the meets and winning." Chloie also shared what she thinks about the team: "I think the team is growing and doing great and we have improved a lot."
Nikile Lewis, 8th grade, reflected on the season so far- "My favorite part about wrestling or the thing I most enjoy is probably getting my hand raised at the end of a tough match or watching the other girls go and pin them in the first round and see them smile and be proud of how they did."
Morgan Gibb, 7th grade, commented on the season so far- "My favorite part of the season so far is probably learning all the new things and bonding with my teammates. What I love about wrestling is feeling powerful and strong and it's nothing like any other sport." Morgan also gave her opinion on the team: "I think our team is doing great this year. The new wrestlers are learning so much and doing so well."

- Released 1987
- Warhammer 40,000 is a miniature wargame that started as Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. It is a heavy roleplay game and it was not who would win in a fight it was what would happen if these two factions fought.
- Source
2nd Edition
- Released 1993
- The second edition of Warhammer 40,000 introduced a new system that restricted armies to a point value and at least 75 percent of your army had to match your faction, they also introduced a heroic character system which you could spend up to 50% of your army’s budget on, some of these characters were so powerful they nicknamed the game Herohammer.

3rd Edition
- Released 1998
- The third edition of Warhammer 40,000 focused on streamlining rules to make it easier for new players to learn and preexisting players not to get confused about rules, it also introduced four new armies: Witchhunters (Ordo Hereticus), Daemonhunters (Ordo Malleus), Necrons, and T’au.

4th Edition
- Released 2004
- The fourth edition of Warhammer 40,000 didn’t have as many changes as third edition but was backwards compatible with third edition, fourth edition was released in three forms a hardcover with additional information for painting and scenery building, a boxed set called Battle for Macragge which contained a more compact softcover version of the rules, dice, and miniatures, the third was a limited edition version of the which had more mission scenarios and a special model for the scenarios.
- Source
5th Edition
- Released 2008
- The fifth edition of Warhammer 40,000 didn’t have very many differences from the third and fourth editions other than some changes on how they function, this edition’s starter set Assault on Black Reach had a smaller almost pocket-sized rulebook but paid the price because it lost the background lore and hobby section a rulebook would generally have, this edition also was the begin of the change from pewter models to plastic or resin models.

6th Edition
- Released 2012
- The sixth edition of Warhammer 40,000 changed many things; how psychic powers worked adding an optional psychic power card and the full inclusion of rules for flying vehicles and monsters changing the way they did damage against vehicles. This edition also saw the new addition of another imperium of man faction called the Imperial Knights which are walkers smaller than that of the scale of Collegia Titanica’s titans.
- Source
7th Edition
- Released 2014
- The seventh edition of Warhammer 40,000 changed several major things, a dedicated psychic phase, and changeable midgame objectives, the midgame objectives allowed players to alternatively score objective points.
- Source
8th Edition
- Released 2017
- The eighth edition of Warhammer 40,000 was the most radical change to Warhammer’s rules introducing three separate ways to play: Open, Matched, and Narrative. The core rules were simplified to 14 and were available as a free PDF, the more complex rules were kept to a hardcover book. The story was also updated to the Eye of Terror had become larger splitting the galaxy in half.
- This edition introduced a new type of Adeptus Astartes called Primaris Space Marines
- Source
9th Edition
- Released 2020
- The ninth edition of Warhammer 40,000, the largest change in size edition was a redesign of the Logo which hasn’t last changed since the third edition, and more Primaris and Necron units.
- Source
10th Edition
- Released 2023
- The tenth edition of Warhammer 40,000 completely removed the psychic and morale phase with battleshock tests instead of the morale phase and nothing to take the place of the psychic phase. It also introduced new units and regulations for Tyranids and Space Marines, and free downloadable indexes for every faction.

RED VELVET CUPCAKE COOKIES
Brooklyn Velasquez
These Red velvet cupcake cookies are the perfect mix of chewy and soft cupcakes. The cookie part is fluffy like a cupcake but still has that chewy texture we all love! They're topped with smooth cream cheese frosting adding a little more flavor. It's the best of both worlds in one delicious treat!
This recipe takes a little longer than most, but it's only about 45 minutes and totally worth the wait! Frosted cookies will keep for about 4 days in the fridge, while unfrosted cookies will keep for about 4 days at room temperature or 1 week in the fridge. This recipe makes about 20 mini cookies and about 10 bigger ones.
Cookie ingredients
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon instant milk
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter (or salted, more of a preference)
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon red liquid-gel food coloring
Frosting ingredients
- 3 ounce block of cream cheese
- 6 tablespoons
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
Baking Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, milk powder, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt then set aside.
In a large mixing bowl. Combine softened butter, oil, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Whisk together until smooth.
Add one large egg and vanilla extract to the large bowl. Whisk together, add vinegar and as much food coloring as you need. The color will be very vibrant at this point but will deepen once you add the dry ingredients.
Add the dry ingredients and fold together until you get a thick cookie dough. Use a 2-3 tablespoon scoop to scoop out large portions of dough onto your baking sheet, leaving about 3 inches of space in between.
Bake the cookies in the center of your preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until the bottom edges are very lightly browned.
Cool the cookies for about 10 minutes before frosting.
Making the frosting, in a medium bowl, mix softened cream cheese and butter until lump-free and smooth
Add vanilla extract and powdered sugar and mix together until smooth. If the frosting is too soft put it in the fridge for about 30 minutes or until firmed to your desired consistency
Pipe or spread your frosting onto the cooled cookies and if you have extra cookie dough you can crumble it and add it to the frosting!
Enjoy!
Ways to Get Cozy
Up Your Cozy Game This Winter
Quinn Fleming
Christmas is right around the corner! Christmas trees are going up and everyone’s starting to take down the pumpkins and make pumpkin pie! Fireplaces are being heated, and plans for the holidays are being made. With our recent first snow, weather outside being frightful, and the house so delightful, I’ve put together a few ways you can get cozy and enjoy the upcoming break in peace.
After gathering opinions from sources around the school, one of the most popular responses was a warm fireplace and a good book. Not only does the fireplace keep you warm, but the book is a good escape. I’ve found that books are a good downtime activity, and the fireplace is just a bonus! The small crackling noise makes for a cozy room, and maybe a little lamplight would help to set the ambience.
The second most popular was a warm drink. Whether it’s from Starbucks or it’s homemade, a warm drink always sets some kind of mood. Find a blanket and kick up your feet as you enjoy a latte or hot apple cider! With a forecast of snow ahead, keep inside and watch the falling of snow.
Another way to get cozy is sleeping in. I find this to be one of the most cozy things. Especially with the gray weather we’ve had lately, laying in bed with a pile of blankets and pillows and a lamp on is an excellent way to relax and make the morning last a little longer. Of course, be careful with how long you make your morning last on school days. This has happened before to me, after I layed in too long, so be careful not to ignore that second ring on your alarm clock.
I hope that after reading this article you might consider a few of them! Enjoy your relaxing afternoons!

Paradoxes and Possible Solutions
Bridger Thompson
In this article we will go over some of the most controversial paradoxes from life and business to time travel, here are some of the oldest traditional paradoxes.
Grandfather Paradox
One of the most popular paradoxes ever created was the Grandfather Paradox. This paradox asks what would happen if you went back in time and killed your ancestor. Logically if you killed your ancestor then your consciousness could not have been created but then how could you have gone back in time to kill your ancestor? This question has and continues to evade logical conclusions for centuries, to almost no avail.
Here are some of the best conclusions to escape the inevitable while still being able to continue your logical life:
Solution 1. When you go back in time to kill your ancestor you kill him/her after he had children
Solution 2. Backwards time travel will prove to be impossible
Pinnochio Paradox
This paradox asks what would happen if Pinocchio says: My nose will grow” (In the world of Pinocchio when Pinocchio lies his nose grows). So if he is telling the truth then his nose will not grow but if his nose doesn't grow then the statement “my nose will grow” is false and then it would grow, but then he would be telling the truth and it wouldn't have grown. This continues forever and seems to be a never-ending cycle, here is a possible solution:
Solution 1. Pinocchio's nose will only grow if he knows he is lying, in this scenario he would only say that to mess with the anomaly that is his nose
Liar Paradox
“I am lying.” This sentence, taken at face value, is often quickly overlooked. However, if you take a deep dive, it quickly becomes a paradox. Here's a nice graphic, try to see if you can solve it.
This sentence quickly leads to insanity and confusion. But here are some possible solutions:
Solution 1: The person who said this was lying from the beginning, the sentence“I am lying” was a lie
Solution 2: The person who told you this is trying to cause you mental anguish
Opposite Day Paradox
As a kid, we all remember telling our siblings or parents something and then when we have to do it, the go-to excuse is “Sorry, it's an opposite day”. This paradox is just that, an opposite day, or the other way around. Let’s start by categorizing what an opposite day is:
Conditions: the concept of everything being opposite is verbal, not physical or mental, If it was physical or mental then existence would turn into nonexistence, not every word is turned into an opposite, just the overall intention of the sentence.
With these conditions let's start with when I go to say, “It’s an opposite day!”. The moment the words leave your mouth you find yourself in a paradox if it were an opposite day then when you say “It’s an opposite day” you would be saying “It’s not an opposite day. These factors make it impossible to see, tell, or express that you don’t want to do your chores. But then wouldn't saying “It’s not opposite day” suffice? Well, no, when you say that, your sibling, parent, etc could just say “Oh, ok” since in “non-opposite day” that would be just stating the obvious. Here are some of the solutions to keep your tradition running:
Solution 1: since the “oppositeness” does not affect physical objects, just write “It’s an opposite day” on a piece of paper and show the victim
Solution 2: Couldn't you just run away and stay silent so they won’t find you and you won’t have to do your chores?
Growth Paradox
This paradox defies the logical conclusion that when your company, business, life, etc gets bigger and grows then it should get easier and less difficult. However, what has been observed for all of human existence is that when a company/family/group gets bigger then by design it gets harder and harder. Logically when you get more workers then you will have more people to make more stocks to make more money and then once you pay your workers you should end up with a profit. However logical this may seem it almost always ends up in the opposite conclusion, more people to work ends up with more people to manage and then mostly ends up in chaos. In the end, the only factor that gets in the way is human nature, if humans were perfectly behaved and experienced then everything would work out just fine (probably). Have you noticed that there are almost 3 million people throughout the army branches? That's more than most companies, but since the army branches have such very high discipline levels they almost always seem to be able to function as a group. With this in mind here are some solutions to grow big but stay manageable:
Solution 1: Keep your workers/family members somewhat disciplined and experienced to prevent anarchy
Solution 2: When starting a company or family, make sure that there are few people in each division or age group (a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old can hardly get into mischief, right?)
These are just the tip of the iceberg, there are tens of hundreds of paradoxes regarding even the smallest detail. If you are interested you should keep exploring different paradoxes (they make great ice-breaking questions) and try to see if you can find any solutions. To help get you started, click HERE for a list of paradoxes.

The Kraken
Adithya Rajendran
Imagine this: You're a sailor sailing with your crew in the 1100s to the 1700s, and you spot an island and decide to explore it. You go towards it, but suddenly, the ground shakes and the island goes underwater. But then it emerges as a giant octopus, the biggest living creature you’ve ever seen, and then it swallows you and your crew whole.
What is this giant octopus creature, you ask? Well, it is a giant mythological beast known as the Kraken.
What is the Kraken, and where did it originate from?
The Kraken is a mythical sea monster that originates from Scandinavian folklore, first spotted in 1180 by King Sverre of Norway.
It was said to have been a giant octopus-like creature that was the size of a large island, with tentacles the size of giant sea serpents.
According to HowStuffWorks, “In old Norse, the term “Kraken” is thought to have evolved from the word “Krake” which referred to an unhealthy animal or something twisted or curled.”
Literature on the Kraken
Because the legend of the Kraken was popular and scary, many books and poems were written about it.
Here is the most famous poem about the Kraken from Academy of American Poets called “The Kraken” written by Alfred Lord Tennyson:
“Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumbered and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green
There hath he lain for ages and will lie
Battening upon huge sea worms,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die”
According to Poem Analysis, the poem is supposed to represent a harboring hatred, discontentment, or fear that finally reaches its breaking point and rises to the surface. But when it does eventually rise to the surface, it dies.
There were also many books written on the Kraken:
- “The Kraken of Cape Madre,” by J.P. Barnett in which a deadly Kraken rises from the depths to cause havoc
- “The Kraken’s Sacrifice” by Katee Robert, about a woman named Catalina who makes a deal with a Kraken so that she can leave the realm that hates her
- "Seafaring Lore and Legend” by Peter D. Jeans
- “Monster Mission” by Eva Ibbotson, where evil villains want to turn an island full of monsters into a theme park, and the Kraken and the other protagonists must defend their island
What has the Kraken become?
Over the centuries, the Kraken was incredibly feared as terrifying unforgettable legend. But what has the legend of the Kraken become today?
Well, it is still seen as a great sea beast, but it doesn't inspire fear any longer.
What do you think of the Kraken?

Quasars
Urijah Holiday
Have you ever thought, what if blackholes could do other things besides suck things in? Learn about what quasars are in this article.
Quasars
What is a quasar? Well, a quasar is a supermassive, blackhole that's taking all the gas matter around it and sucking it in with tens of billions of solar masses with HUGE amounts of energy.
The sheer force of the clouds getting sucked into the black hole creates immense heat which makes it incredibly bright. Quasars are growing rapidly from all the gas matter.
Fun Fact: Quasars are remarked as an extreme form of “Active Galactic Nuclei” or AGN for short.
You might have heard of TON618, the largest black hole we know of but, strictly speaking, it is a quasar.
How Are Quasars Formed?
Quasars can be formed from a certain kind of event that causes massive amounts of gas to pile into/onto the central supermassive blackhole in the certain galaxy.
Now it’s not certain why this happens but some think it’s because of something called the galaxy merger. Now the galaxy merger is exactly what you think it is, when two galaxies crash into each other when the disruption from their gravitational fields shifts the direction of motion of massive clouds of molecular gas in those galaxies, causing them to collapse.
What Do Quasars Do For The Galaxy?
Well it’s actually bad because quasars are like parasites almost sucking up huge amounts of gas from the host galaxy.
The dramatic effects the quasar does is called “feedback”. The feedback is powerful outflows of ionized gas blown from the quasar by radiation winds (like solar wind but way more powerful.)
This feedback expands out into the host galaxy, pushing lots of molecular gas clouds together, triggering gigantic starbursts.
The outflows can blow away gas from the interstellar medium which is just the area between stars and such, containing lots of neutrinos, charged particles, atoms, molecules, dark matter and finally photons ranging from the highest energy radiation to the lowest of it.
The outflows blow away gas from the interstellar medium, either warming it up enough that all the stuff becomes too energetic, collapsing to form stars, or expelling it from the galaxy entirely, which makes stars have no fuel essentially starving them.
The feedback from the quasar can have long lasting effects in the evolution of the galaxy (consequences), often bringing the star making phase to a stop after a small burst.
These bursts can affect the star making for hundreds of millions of years and in the worst case scenario, even forever.
If you want to learn even more about quasars click on the source for this article, HERE.
Real Christmas tree vs. Fake Christmas tree
(pros and cons of both)
Elliot Holland-Neff
This Christmas, you will have to decide whether a real Christmas tree or fake Christmas tree will look best in your house.
Pros for a Real Tree:
- Pine needle scent makes your house feel festive.
- You get to choose the size and shape each year.
- The idea of a real tree is festive.
Cons for a Real Tree:
- It takes too much work to go and get it.
- It’s messy and leaves pine needles everywhere.
- You have to remember to water it so it does not die before Christmas.
Pros for a Fake tree:
- It’s clean and doesn't make a mess.
- You don’t have to remember to water it.
