Project Description:

Georgia Gwinnett College’s Gateway Center is a new convocation and recreation facility designed to serve as the campus’ primary venue for milestone events while strengthening daily student life through health, wellness and belonging. Positioned as a defining landmark at the east campus entry, the three-story building establishes a clear sense of arrival and identity, an intentional “gateway” that embodies GGC’s mission of holistic student development. The facility’s centerpiece is a highly flexible event arena anchored by a collegiate-sized basketball court. With seating for 3,100 during athletics competitions — and expansion capacity for up to 3,300 for commencements, orientations, concerts and community gatherings — the main event space transitions seamlessly between recreation and ceremonial modes through retractable seating, integrated audiovisual systems and programmable lighting scenes. Supporting amenities include locker rooms, team facilities, a presidential suite, and flexible-use rooms that accommodate formal and informal learning, collaboration and student support. A 5,400-square-foot fitness mezzanine adds group exercise rooms, locker rooms and support spaces, while the open student commons functions as the building’s social spine — filled with daylight, wooded views and visibility into key activity zones. Inclusivity guided the project, with universal design features, such as private changing rooms, wide accessible circulation, tunable lighting, acoustic treatments and clear wayfinding across levels. Architecturally, a sweeping curved roof defines the building’s profile — expressing movement, energy and welcome — while a contemporary brick-and-metal palette harmonizes with campus character.
