Project Description:

Goals, percentages, shots and statistics come together in this one‑of‑a‑kind higher education facility on the south side of Howard Community College’s campus. The new “Mathletics” facility, combining math and athletics, brings together teaching and coaching under the same roof in a single integrated facility. Howard Community College leadership aims to create synergy between the mathematics department developing sports-specific math applications in partnership with the athletics department providing the real-life example of those applications. Academic spaces include a math learning center, class laboratories, study lounges, maker space and research areas. The athletics component encompasses a competition gym, a MAC gym, multipurpose rooms for activity classes, locker rooms, classrooms, a fitness center, and a dedicated strength and conditioning suite. Anchoring the facility is the Dragons Lair, the primary competition venue serving HCC’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its women’s volleyball and co‑ed cheerleading teams. All indoor and outdoor athletics programs are supported by dedicated locker rooms and an exclusive student‑athlete training room. The facility’s curving exterior responds directly to the site. The project was delivered in two construction phases, beginning with the construction of a new athletic performance wing south of the existing 1968 athletics facility. That facility was subsequently demolished to make way for the second phase of the project, which included lower‑level athletics support spaces and three levels of math learning environments above.
