WOW WHAT'S ON AT WHITEBRIDGE Term 2 Week 10

WEEK 10 TERM 2 2025

PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

As we close Term 2, I want to take the opportunity to reflect on our achievements, share important announcements, and express my gratitude for your continued support. This term has been vibrant and productive, showcasing the hard work of our students, staff, and community.

NAPLAN Achievements

I am pleased to share that our preliminary NAPLAN results have been released, and I am incredibly proud of our students’ efforts resulting in strong performances. The results indicate substantial growth in both literacy and numeracy, with many students exceeding the national average. This achievement is a direct reflection of the dedication and effort put forth by our teachers and the resilience displayed by our students.

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all our students who participated in NAPLAN. Your hard work has truly paid off, and we are excited to see you continue to thrive in your academic journey.

Engaging with our community

I would also like to thank our community members who attended the recent subject selection information sessions and the Term 2 P&C meeting. It was inspiring to see so many families engaged in discussions about the educational pathways available to our students. A special thanks to the special guests from our community who joined us at the recent P and C meeting to discuss actions aimed at creating a safer pathway for students onto the Fernleigh Track. There are proposed improvements for pathways that will enhance safety, particularly concerning the current temporary measures across the dam wall.

We encourage students, parents and community members who wish to support this proposal to reach out to the P&C for more details. Your involvement is crucial as we work together to ensure a safe environment for our students.

Invitation to students and families - Upcoming Guest Speaker

I invite all families and students to attend a valuable session with guest speaker Graham Wright on Monday, July 21st, from 3:45 to 4:45 in the school library. Graham will discuss the importance of subject selection for individual students, debunking myths and misconceptions around HSC results and cover strategies to maximise HSC results and enhance student performance. Graham will be working with staff through professional development during the day and has agreed to present a special session for students and families in the afternoon.

This session is particularly relevant for students and families from Year 9 through to Year 12, however we also welcome Stage 4 students and families, as the insights shared will be beneficial in navigating senior secondary education.

Celebrations and Recognition.

It was wonderful to see so many families join us for our recent Semester 1 recognition assemblies. Congratulations to all our award winners! Your achievements inspire us all to strive for excellence.

Additionally, our Aboriginal dance group Yulerbah (footsteps in the sand) concluded the term with a large number of outstanding performances and workshops that supported our partner primary schools and community organisations during their NAIDOC celebrations. With NAIDOC week falling in the school holidays, our school will be celebrating NAIDOC Week early next term, we look forward to embracing this wonderful opportunity to honour the strength of Aboriginal culture and histories within our school and the wider community.

Looking Ahead to Term 3

Term 3 is shaping up to be significant, we will again join with the partner schools of our Wiyellai Koa community of schools to celebrate Public Education week in Week 3 of the term and we hope to see a large number of families right across our community join us for the special Public Education week award ceremony.

Our Year 11 students and staff will depart from school on Sunday 20th July heading for the snow fields as they spend 3 days on snow learning new skills, getting out of their comfort zone, strengthening relationships and having a huge amount of fun. Thanks to our staff who are giving up their time and leaving behind their own families to take students away, providing them with this wonderful experience.

Trial HSC examinations for Year 12 courses of study will be held from the 4th – 15th August and following this, we will then see the commencement of formal HSC examinations for submitted works, languages, and practical performances in Music, Dance, and Drama. I applaud our staff and students for their unwavering commitment to achieving strong HSC outcomes, particularly with the study skills tutorials and workshops conducted during these current holidays. The willingness of our staff to dedicate their time and effort to support our students is truly commendable.

As we prepare for the colder months, I want to remind everyone that students are required to wear full school winter uniform, including black leather shoes, when they return on Tuesday, July 22nd. The uniform shop is well-stocked with both girls' and boys' grey winter pants, including newly designed grey sports-style pants based on community feedback. Please note that light grey marle fleece track pants are NOT part of the school uniform. The uniform shop operates on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings, and online orders are available anytime for your convenience.

As we look forward to welcoming all our students and families back for a busy Term 3, I wish you a restful and enjoyable break. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our school community.

Guiding Subject Choices: Supporting Junior Students Through Key Transitions

Recently, our Year 10 students engaged in a comprehensive program designed to support their subject selection for Year 11. The process began with a well-attended Information Evening, where students and parents received a formal presentation on Stage 6. This was followed by an informal faculty expo, allowing families to explore the wide range of subjects on offer and speak directly with teachers from each department.

To further assist with decision-making, students participated in three days of taster lessons, choosing subjects they were interested in pursuing. These sessions offered a hands-on glimpse into the structure, expectations, and learning experiences typical of Year 11 classes. Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the clarity and confidence the experience provided.

Year 8 students also took part in an Information Evening focused on the Year 9 curriculum for 2025. Students and parents had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with teachers about the elective subjects available next year, helping them make informed choices based on their interests and goals.

Both Year 8 and Year 10 students are now completing their subject selections online, streamlining the process and ensuring accuracy.

A Parent Information Evening will be held for Year 9 families on 5 August, focusing on VET early commencement opportunities and the 200-hour elective options available for 2025.

Year 7 students will also receive information about their Semester One elective choices for the upcoming academic year. Following these sessions, both Year 7 and Year 9 students will complete their subject selections online.

PDHPE

Week 7 saw the culmination of the Year 10 Dance unit and the greatest event on the social calendar, "The Whitebridge High School Op Shop Formal". Some students went above and beyond, dancing in some elaborate dresses, streamlined suits, high heels, low heels, dancing shoes and top hats. They demonstrated respect and enthusiasm whilst dancing the Samba, Mambo, Teton Mountain Stomp, Waltz and the Pride of Erin in a packed school hall. This is one of the highlights of the PDHPE programs at the school, where students not only learn to enjoy dance as physical activity, but learn and refine the soft skills of forming relationships, demonstrating respect, self-regulation and motivation. The students had a wonderful time and we look forward to seeing them utilise their learning in the future.

HPGE (Aspire)

During this semester our Year 7 and 8 ASPIRE students have engaged in learning which has increased their understanding of their own cognition and has fostered abilities to bolster their creative and logical thinking strategies.

STARSTRUCK

Star Struck (Remixed) 2025 was an unforgettable celebration of student creativity and talent, and Whitebridge High School was front and centre across four completely sold-out shows!

Our students represented the school with pride across Drama, Dance, SSS, Puppetry, featured singing and backstage crew. Their professionalism, talent and enthusiasm were on full display and a true testament to the high standard of performing arts at Whitebridge High.

Beyond the stage, students gained valuable industry experience, working with professional directors, choreographers, and technical staff. They developed confidence, collaboration, resilience and performance skills that will stay with them moving forward. We had multiple compliments from professionals saying how wonderful our Whitebridge students were.

Perhaps most importantly, they also formed lasting friendships with students from different year groups in our school and even across the broader Hunter, building connections and memories that made the whole experience even more special.

A very big thank you to all the families and carers who supported our performers. We are so proud of the way our students embraced this opportunity and we couldn't have done it without your help and commitment!

Well done to all involved! Until next year...

Mark Hughes Foundation Fundraiser

In Week 9 our SRC hosted a bake sale at recess. Thank you to our school community for your baking skills, gold coin donations and beanie wearing on this day. We raised $870 from our bake sale and $723 so far online.

The online donation portal is still open. The Mark Hughes Foundation is a charity that we have supported for many years now and whilst Mark Hughes was not able to join us in person, we were able to view a personal thanks from him during our whole school assembly. We are extremely proud of our kindness culture at Whitebridge High and extending that kindness beyond our school gates.

Where Are They Now? – Class of 2024 (Mathematics Focus)

Our “Where Are They Now?” series shines a spotlight on the Class of 2024, with a special focus on our Mathematics students. Whether pursuing engineering, data science, finance, trades or teaching, these students are applying the skills they developed in our classrooms to real-world futures. Their stories highlight how mathematical thinking opens doors and equips young people for success in a range of exciting pathways.

First up... Tully Elliott -  Band 6 Mathematics Advanced 2024

  • Are you currently studying, if so what degree and where? Chemical Engineering at the University of Newcastle
  • How is maths used in your course or future career? Maths is a very important subject in engineering. It allows you to do calculations and understand how things work and predict what things are going to do.
  • What’s your favourite memory of learning maths at school? In our last week of school our maths class surprised Mr Saperas by all dressing up as him.
  • Was there a teacher, topic or moment that made maths 'click' for you? Not really, but my favourite topics would be algebra and calculus.
  • What advice would you give to students currently studying maths? Have fun, it's good for the soul. I think maths is actually really cool but lots of people tell themselves that they don't like it without actually giving it a good go. I would recommend doing it as a subject in your senior years as there are lots of different levels that you can do that suit your ability and it is actually very useful.
  • What’s your go-to way to relax or take a break from study/work? Do some exercise and go to the beach. It's good for your brain.
  • Any achievements or proud moments you'd like to share? I was fortunate to receive an ATSE scholarship for women in STEM, as well as a university scholarship awarded to high-achieving female students entering engineering.

The Mathematics faculty is currently working with Tully and some of her peers to return and share their study tips and strategies with our 2025 HSC cohort. Tully has also expressed interest in speaking with students - particularly girls - who are considering a future in engineering.

Keep an eye out for more “Where Are They Now” in future newsletters.

Financial Services Work Placement – Lacy Barnes

Year 10 student Lacy Barnes recently completed an outstanding self-sourced work placement at NAB headquarters in Melbourne. This unique opportunity allowed Lacy to experience the fast-paced world of corporate banking and gain valuable insight into the financial services industry at a national level.

1. Where did you complete your workplacement and what was the name of the organisation and its location? I completed my work placement at the NAB Head Office, in Melbourne.

2. What type of business is this organisation? The NAB is a national bank.

3. What was your role or focus during the placement? I mainly accompanied my father around the office, attending numerous meetings about financial hardship, and the development of "Copilot".

4. Can you describe a typical day during your placement? What tasks or activities were you involved in? A typical day at the NAB office included going to meetings with my father and his team. Several of these were dedicated to teaching other employees at the office how to use "Copilot" and what it can do to assist your everyday life. Additionally, I met up with a marketing professional and learned all about the industry and what it has to offer.

5. How has this experience influenced your career interests in financial services? The placement helped me understand what is required and expected of employees in this industry. It has definitely shaped an idea for me about whether or not I would be interested in working in Financial Services. I believe I would be capable of taking on a role like this and now have an interest in this industry.

6. Did you see any job roles that interested you or you'd like to explore in the future? After having a meeting with a marketing professional and learning all the aspects of the industry, I have found a new interest in a marketing position.

7. What part of the experience did you enjoy the most? I enjoyed being in a brand new atmosphere and meeting some high level executives of one of Australia's largest companies.

8. What did you find most challenging? Grasping some of the in-house lingo was one of the most challenging parts of the placement.

9. What's one key takeaway you've gained from this placement that will help you in your future career or study? Building relationships and networking with people can help with mentoring.

Year 9 Visual Arts Spotlight

This term, Year 9 Visual Arts students have immersed themselves in the bold, vibrant world of Pop Art, a movement that emerged in the 1950s and challenged traditional ideas of fine art by drawing inspiration from everyday life. Through the exploration of iconic artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg, students have investigated how commercial imagery, advertising, mass media, and popular culture can be transformed into powerful visual statements.

With a focus on bold colour palettes, graphic styles, and recognisable symbols, students have created a dynamic series of works that reflect both the aesthetics and spirit of the Pop Art era. Their final artworks are a celebration of individuality, creativity, and cultural commentary — reimagining the visual language of consumer society through a contemporary lens.

The results have been eye-catching and exciting, showcasing not only technical development but also the students' growing confidence in expressing their ideas visually. We look forward to displaying these vibrant pieces in MADD Night later on this year!

Music Spotlight

Congratulations to our incredibly talented musicians and vocalists for their outstanding performances in Week 7 at Flamingos Live. The evening was a true celebration of creativity, dedication and musical excellence, as students took to the stage to share their hard work and passion with a live audience.

From soulful solos to high-energy ensemble pieces, the showcase highlighted the diversity of talent within our school’s performing arts community. Each student brought something unique to the stage, demonstrating not only technical skill but also a strong sense of collaboration and confidence.

A huge congratulations to Whitebridge High School’s very own band "Trophy Wyfe" featuring talented Rex Wardle (Y11), Tallis Kessell (Y11) and Neve Scully (Y12), on the release of their monumental debut album "No One’s Listening".

This exciting milestone marks a major achievement for the trio, whose original sound and creative energy have made them a standout act within our school community and beyond. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, dedication, and passion for music — and can’t wait to see what they do next!

As Term 2 draws to a close, we’re proud to reflect on the rich and diverse learning experiences our students have enjoyed at The Malang Academy. This term has been filled with hands-on learning, cultural exploration, and community engagement—offering something for every learner to connect with and grow from.

In the classroom, students travelled back in time during our Medieval Europe unit, exploring castles, kings, knights, and daily life in the Middle Ages. During Science Week, we tied this theme into practical learning with a series of exciting medieval-themed science experiments—from testing the strength of different building materials to investigating medieval hygiene practices. Students loved becoming “science scribes,” predicting, testing, and discovering just like scholars of the past.

Our "Connection to Country" unit provided meaningful learning opportunities about Aboriginal culture, history, and connection to land. These studies were brought to life through several cultural excursions, including the Yamuloong Bush Tucker Garden Tour, where students explored native plants and created beautiful Aboriginal scratch art. We were also fortunate to receive a Landcare Bush Tucker School Talk and Tour, which deepened students' understanding of sustainable land use and traditional food sources. A huge thank you to Landcare for generously donating plants to help grow our very own bush tucker garden here at school!

Literacy learning came alive with our novel studies of "Holes" and "Bridge to Terabithia". Students explored important themes such as resilience, imagination, loss and belonging—developing their reading, comprehension, and empathy along the way. In Financial Maths, students practised real-world skills such as budgeting, calculating discounts and comparing prices, while Work Education focused on identifying personal strengths, understanding workplace expectations, and preparing for future employment.

This term also offered a fantastic variety of experiential and sporting opportunities. Students cooked traditional damper during our Campfire Cooking Session, developing teamwork, independence, and culinary confidence. The Athletics Carnival and Swimming Program supported physical development and participation, while events like the Boccia Competition and Indigenous Talent Identification Sports Day encouraged inclusive and friendly competition.

A special shout-out to our talented performers who proudly represented The Malang Academy in this year’s Star Struck program. Your creativity and courage were truly inspiring!

We are incredibly proud of every student for the progress they’ve made, the challenges they’ve tackled, and the way they’ve supported one another this term. Thank you to our families and carers for your continued encouragement and involvement. It truly makes a difference.

We wish you a safe, restful holiday break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting term at The Malang Academy.

Warm regards

The Malang Academy Team

Girls Open Volleyball Team Brings the Heat!

Our Girls Open Volleyball Team had an incredible run at the recent regional carnival, showing off their skills, teamwork, and unstoppable energy!

They kicked off with a thrilling win over Tomaree in a 2–1 match (15–13, 15–17, 10–3), followed by strong victories against West Wallsend (15–8, 15–10) and Taree (15–12, 15–14). In the quarter-finals, they brought the fire against Newcastle High, dominating 15–4 and 15–13 to head into the semis.

The semi-final against Irrawang was the true test of grit and team spirit. After a close first two sets (15–13, 12–15), the girls dug deep and stormed home in the third, winning 15–10 and booking their spot in the top two teams in the region. The girls have earned their spot in the Sydney State Carnival at the beginning of next term.

This team continues to lead with heart, support each other fiercely, and represent our school with pride.

I couldn’t be prouder of this group. Their teamwork, leadership, and resilience on and off the court was inspiring to watch. Every player gave their all, lifted one another, and truly played as one. What a team!

SURFEST

Early in Term 2, Whitebridge High had 32 surfers participating in the Surfest High School team challenge. They tackled the wet and wild conditions with great skill and enthusiasm. Our teams had some great results with lots of teams placing 2nd in their heats. Well done to the team of Noah Carr, Jackson Carter and Jesse Roni who came 4th overall.

The team of Phoenix Visscher, Sam Griffiths and Nixon White had an excellent day as well. They won their heat and were the overall best scoring team for the day. This meant they qualified for the final where they finished 2nd out of 66 teams with a combined score of 18.94. The majority of the students stayed to cheer them on which was a great show of school culture. Congratulations to all the students involved!!
