CRA Newsletter 11.07.25 Half Term 6 - July 2025

SLT Update

This week has been another busy week in the academy. On Tuesday we had our CRA Sports Day, which is always such a lovely event, where we come together as 3 houses and 1 community and celebrate each other. Congratulations to this year's victory for Terra!

On Thursday, a group of students went off to the woods in Newark to complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. This was a fantastic overnight camping experience for those who have been working towards the award and we are very proud of the resilience and courage they showed during the trip.

Next week is equally busy; we have the House Championship Reveal during enrichment on Monday and then the House Reward on the Tuesday. 6 tutor groups have made it around the Houseopoly boards and to SLT award and will be enjoying their BBQ Wednesday. On Thursday a group of students with 95% or above attendance and over 750 achievement points will be going on their Platinum Rewards Trip and on Friday we finish the day with our termly rewards assembly. So many students to celebrate as we finish the academic year.

Have a wonderful weekend and keep cool! Communications regarding uniform will come over the weekend dependant on the weather forecast.

Table Talk

We have recently enjoyed two sporting events, Sports day and the Summer cup. Sports day contributes to the House Championship, culmination of a year’s worth of house events. We try our best to foster competition but in doing so we want students to be able to show respect, one of our key values.

Heads of house talked to students about showing respect during sports day to each other and to opponents and we saw that in the applause and congratulations that were shared.

Sport is a great setting to learn about respect and to start to generate a conversation with teenagers about it, because sport involves valuing oneself, others, and the rules and officials of the game, promoting fair play, and fostering a positive sporting environment. It encompasses treating opponents with dignity, accepting decisions, and celebrating achievements together.

This picture epitomises respect in sport. After one of the hardest fought and close Ashes series in years. Australia and England met at Egbaston in the 2nd test. Australia were chasing 275 to win and got down to Australia needing 15 to win and England 1 wicket, with 3 to win England got the wicket they needed. Brett Lee the batter in the picture had hit an unbeaten 43 and was devastated, Andrew Flintoff had taken 4 wickets to secure victory. This picture just shows the respect that both had for each other and the game and has become the picture to illustrate the spirit of the game.

Maybe talk about some of the examples of respect you have seen or witnessed in sport or life and discuss with your teenagers

Why We Do What We Do

For sports day we encourage students to wear the colour of their house to feel an affiliation and sense of belonging to the event for their house whether they are participating or not. Having a sense of belonging is so important for positive mental health so we do all we can to encourage a feeling of pride and identity within the house.

Music

From September 2025, students will be able to have music lessons provided for by Lincolnshire Music Service. If your child is interested, please follow this link to view the letter with full information and the contact details.

Maths Department

Each week, our students at CRA, complete maths questions for their homework on Sparx. Some students answer additional questions, further increasing their mathematical knowledge. We do this as there are online resources to help and guide students if they are struggling with a question. You might like to ask them to show you what they typically do on a weekly basis.

This weeks Sparx Stars are

  • Toby W- Year 7
  • Ed G - Year 9
  • Ryan P - Year 10

Times Tables

At the end of all lessons students stand behind their chairs in silence to prepare for themselves for the next lesson. From September, on a weekly rota, Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their timetables to help embed them in their long term memory.

Week beginning - 14 July 25 - Times table is 7

Accelerated Reading

Week beginning - 14 July 2025 - Period 3

Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice

Each week we will show you examples of the various careers linked to the subject you are studying. This week’s career idea is ‘Jobs related to Dance'

Leave of absence request

A Principal can only authorise a leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. We will take into account the Government guidance when considering what the exceptional circumstances are- all applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. You may be able to take your child out of school in exceptional circumstances, providing an application is made in advance by the parent/carer, this request complies with Government guidance and the leave is deemed to be ‘exceptional’ by the Principal.

If you take a leave of absence without our permission or if your child fails to return by the agreed date if permission was granted, then this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and noted in your child’s record. You might also be issued with a fixed penalty notice for this absence. If your child has not returned within 10 days of the expected date of return then, after consultation with the Local Authority, we may take your child off our school roll.

As examples, the following reasons are not considered to be exceptional circumstances:

  • availability of cheap holidays
  • periods overlapping with beginning or end of term
  • visits to family
  • renewing passports

Requests for leave of absence will only be considered if made in writing. Please ensure you use the leave of absence request form to do this.

Terra Crowned 2025 Sports Day Champions

On Tuesday this week students and staff at Charles Read Academy represented their house teams across 10 events, in the bid to be crowned 2025 Sports Day champions.

Sports Day got underway with field events in the morning before an exciting Tug of War battle between tutor groups and staff teams. Students across each year group battled for points across each event, adding to a live leader board, with the house with the highest accumulated points total crowned champions. The atmosphere throughout the day was electric with students and staff creating a sea of house colours – sporting their blue, yellow and green with pride.

The day concluded with a series of 100m, 200m and relay races, including a staff relay race at the end.

It was the closest sports day ever, with Terra coming out on top by only 12 points to Caeli in 2nd place. Aqua settled for 3rd place this year despite going into the event as last years winners. Well to done everyone who took part!
