NLPS Educator Wins Award

Congratulations to Carmella Luvisotto for winning the Outstanding Professional Secondary Music Educator Award at this year's BCMEA Conference. Seen here with Carmella is Retired Music Teacher Sarah Falls.

Wellington Secondary Principal Andrea Davidson said, "This honour goes to one secondary music educator from across the province and this year our most musical wildcat was honoured!"

Family Wellness Hub

The Nanaimo Early Years Partnership and its partners host the Early Years Family Wellness Hub on November 8, 2023. The event is free for families with children from newborn to eight years old.

Discover the secrets of healthy eating, early learning and child development. Learn about public health supports, Indigenous resources and more.

Regular Board Meeting

At the regular Board Meeting on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, the Board directed staff to reopen Rutherford Elementary in September 2025 and create a School Transition Working Group to address any issues associated with reopening the facility. The Board began consultation processes for the draft Strategic Plan goals and objectives and the Transportation policy.

Community Engagements

1) Reminder: The Board of Education seeks feedback on the Public Interest Disclosure Policy through a notice of motion for 30 days, utilizing the consultation process. Feedback is being accepted until October 27, 2023.

2) New: The Board of Education is seeking feedback on the DRAFT Strategic Plan. You have until November 24, 2023, to share your feedback.

3) New: The Board of Education is seeking feedback on the draft revised Policy 3.8 - Transportation. You have until November 24, 2023, to share your feedback.

Roots of Empathy

Students at Fairview Community School are fortunate to begin the journey with a baby and parent for the Roots of Empathy program. Children will learn to identify and understand the feelings of the baby, themselves and others. Through this experiential learning program, students will learn to create connections and develop healthy relationships, ultimately learning about empathy. Watch the interaction with Baby Elly.

October is AAC Awareness Month!

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It refers to tools, systems, or strategies that can support a person who has difficulties communicating using speech. These tools can enhance and provide a different means of communication and may include using gestures (e.g. pointing, thumbs up), using an iPad with a communication app, or a high tech computer that you can control with your eyes.

The Great Nanaimo Toy Drive

The Great Nanaimo Toy Drive coordinates the donation and distribution of toys to families in need during the holiday season for children 0 – 17 who live in Nanaimo between Lantzville and Cedar. Families wishing to take advantage of this program must pre-register on line or by phone this year.

Registration for the 2023 Great Nanaimo Toy Drive begins November 13th and runs until December 3rd.

Families can register here or the QR code below using a computer or mobile device, or by Telephone at 778-787-1803 Tuesday to Saturday. A detailed scheduled for phone volunteers will be available on our website or on social media.

Only one parent/guardian is able to register and the preferred identification is the child’s Personal Health Number. Alternative Identification could include a Status Card or Permanent Resident Card for each child.

Bank of Canada Museum's Award of Excellence in Teaching Economics

Nominate an educator who brings economics into the classroom in new and engaging ways. The contest is open to teachers from Grades 6 - 12 who have creatively explored economic concepts or topics in the classroom. There are a number of ways to introduce economic concepts. Topics may include:

  • Early trade in Canada
  • Financial markets
  • The future of work
  • Inflation and interest
  • The green economy

Applications accepted until March 3, 2024 at 11:59pm (EST). Check out the website to see who is eligible and find out how to submit a nomination. Nominate someone today. In addition to the award, the winning teachers will each receive $1,000 cash prize and basket of resources and supplies for their class.
