International Polar Bear Day

Polar bears live very solitary lives. Seeing them in their natural habitat is a special and unique opportunity which is not to be taken lightly. Having the incredible opportunity to witness their beauty and power has emboldened me to spread awareness about their plight. The Arctic is the epicenter of the changes our planet is experiencing. The Arctic is warming 4 times faster than anywhere else on earth. Therefore, the wildlife which rely on the sea ice for food and shelter are at an increased risk of starvation and habitat loss.

Did you know...February 27th is International Polar Bear Day!

This special day was founded to coincide with the time period when polar bear moms and cubs are snug in their dens. As part of the celebration, the focus is on the need to protect denning families across the Arctic. Denning is the most vulnerable time in a polar bear’s life. And in a warming Arctic, where polar bears face enormous challenges, the survival of every single cub is critically important. Keeping moms and cubs safe while also addressing climate change is a critical part of the work on behalf of polar bears.

Why should we care?

Polar bears are a keystone species. They play a vital role in the health of the ecosystem and the balance of the food chain in the Arctic. My goal is not to point blame, shame, or guilt. My goal is to spread awareness and share a message of empowerment to help those who need it. For what happens to the wild ones, in turn, happens to us.

So...how can we help?

Share the story of this fascinating and important species with others. Simply raising awareness about this species can contribute to its overall protection.

Please visit https://polarbearsinternational.org to learn more about polar bears and ways we can help! Your support can make a real difference.

Photo Fact!

The word "photography" originates from a Greek word, meaning "drawing with light".

Without light photography would not be possible. Using a long exposure, a camera can capture even the smallest amount of light.

To the naked eye, the Aurora Borealis was not visible on the night this photo was taken. However, using a 30 second exposure, my camera "saw" the beautiful lights dancing in the sky above and was able to produce a beautiful photograph of the Northern Lights from the Northern Nevada desert.
