November is ...
Epilepsy Awareness Month
Did You Know:
1 in 10 people will have a seizure and 1 in 26 will develop epilepsy during their lifetime.
There are 3.4 million people living with epilepsy in the United States; 470,000 of them are children.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that can affect any one of us regardless of race, age, or gender.
Seizures are a symptom of epilepsy. Not all seizures are the same. Many people with epilepsy have more than one type of seizure.
Misunderstanding and misinformation about seizures contribute to continued feelings of stigmatization and negative outcomes for people with epilepsy.
At the November 19th Board of Education meeting, the Board recognized the 49th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. IDEA was signed into law on November 29, 1975 and guarantees access to a free and appropriate public education to every child with a disability in every state across the country. The Board wanted to recognize and celebrate all students in all eligibility categories!
Director's Corner
Dr. Jodie Rommel, Director of Integrated Services
Dear Families,
I am aware that some families have concerns with the encryption of their child's IEP documents. Please know that we are working on this issue! In the meantime, if you are unable to access documents due to PSD's encryption process, please contact the Assistant Director for your feeder zone (see chart below)
Integrated Services Listening Sessions have been scheduled! This is an opportunity to sign up for a 30-minute meeting with Integrated Services Leadership to ask questions, get information, and/or share your concerns. You will be free to discuss your individual situation or any other special education topic of your choosing. Please take advantage of this opportunity to let your voice be heard! SEAC Update
The 2024-25 Special Education Advisory Committee is made up of parents, community partners, and PSD school staff. The purpose of SEAC is to represent students with disabilities and advise the Special Education Leadership Team on their behalf. It is also to help the Integrated Services Department to develop collaborative parent, community and educator partnerships and to promote best practices for students with disabilities.
At the September meeting, the committee focused on Integrated Services updates, student growth, and SEAC feedback from the Board of Education. The committee is working on ways to expand membership, opportunities for authentic feedback from the membership, and a feedback loop to keep the Board of Education and district families aware of the work they are doing.
At the October meeting, the committee learned about the Affective Needs Program Evaluation and provided feedback on the review as well as recommendations for conducting future program evaluations.
At the November meeting, the committee heard a presentation about a new district committee, the Comprehensive Planning Committee, and provided input on the committee charter.
