History Serenity, Inc.

The History of Serenity, Inc.

In the fall of 2002, Rosa Johnson, a seasoned outreach and prevention professional with twenty-five years of experience, felt a profound calling to support individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and other life-threatening diseases. Rosa's journey began with a deep empathy for those facing these challenges, recognizing the significant barriers and stresses they encountered. She understood that a lack of communication often exacerbated their struggles, negatively impacting their well-being and dignity.

Rosa's inspiration to create Serenity was deeply personal. She vividly recalled a young woman who, upon learning she was both pregnant and HIV-positive, was engulfed by shock, disbelief, and fear. This poignant encounter underscored the urgent need for comfort, support, and understanding, fueling Rosa's determination to make a difference.

With no initial funds, Rosa turned to her church, Faith and Hope Temple Church of God in Christ, led by Elder Herman L. Crockett. The church recognized the critical need within the community and generously provided office space for Serenity, covering the first year's rent. This act of faith and support laid the foundation for what would become a beacon of hope for many.

Rosa envisioned Serenity as a "one-stop shop" model, offering comprehensive services in a safe and confidential setting. The primary goal was to improve the quality of life for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, particularly those with mental illness or recovering from substance abuse. By addressing their needs onsite or through careful referrals, Serenity aimed to reduce frustration, anger, and guilt, thereby preserving the dignity and self-worth of its participants.

To ensure effective communication and rapid referrals between agencies, Rosa founded Bridging Our Community (BOC), a network of area service providers. BOC meets quarterly to share updates, reduce duplication of efforts, and strengthen inter-agency relationships. This collaborative approach has significantly enhanced services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS and the broader community.

Since its founding, Serenity has grown into a recognized resource for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. The agency continues to expand its services, not only to ensure participant safety but also to educate the public about HIV/AIDS and its transmission. Serenity's outreach efforts include distributing free condoms at various community sites, such as medical offices and salons, to protect the community.
